Carbon neutral products
Autex Acoustics has reduced the carbon footprint of its products through smart design and efficient manufacturing. Through its carbon neutral process, Autex Acoustics mitigates their carbon impact by offsetting the equivalent emissions using certified carbon credits, making its products entirely carbon neutral. These carbon credits are generated from projects focused on renewable energy, fuel switching, and reforestation around the world.
Autex Acoustics only supports robust, verifiable carbon credits, and its calculations are independently verified by third-party carbon experts. All products have readily available Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) which account for carbon offsetting in accordance with EPD standards EN 15804, ISO 14025, and ISO 21930.
Embodied carbon
Total CO₂-e emissions with carbon offsets and excluding offsets per kg of product.
Products | CO₂-e/kg product | CO₂-e/kg product excluding offsets |
---|---|---|
Cube™, Cascade™, Cove™, Lattice, Loch™, Vicinity™, Accent Ceiling Tiles and Grid Ceiling Tiles | 0.00 | 1.89 |
Quietspace® Panel and APA | 0.00 | 3.53 |
3D Tiles | 0.00 | 1.87 |
3D Ceiling Tiles | 0.00 | 1.90 |
Workstation | 0.00 | 2.14 |
Symphony and Sordino Composition | 0.00 | 2.95 |
Vertiface® | 0.00 | 2.14 |
The amount of embodied carbon varies significantly between different materials. For context, the embodied carbon of a nylon carpet tile ranges between 10.7 - 19.7 kg CO₂ e/kg and water-based paint is 2.9 kg CO₂ e/kg.
Carbon neutral products: A step-by-step overview
- A cradle-to-gate Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) is undertaken by independent experts at the Evah Institute to assess the environmental impacts of manufacturing Autex Acoustics products from the production of raw material to the completion of its end products.
- Using the LCA model, an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is prepared in accordance with Environmental Product Declaration standard EN 15804, the EPD standard for sustainability of construction works and services.
- Using embodied carbon data from the LCA and manufacturing volumes, the product emissions of all manufactured products are calculated.
- An equivalent amount of emissions offsets (measured in tonnes of carbon) are purchased through Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) from the United Nations. These carbon credits are retired from the registry to avoid double counting.
- Autex Acoustics is then issued a certificate to verify the purchase and retirement of carbon credits. An additional verification check of these calculations is conducted by another third-party carbon expert, EKOS, to ensure the quality and accuracy of the calculation, including the offsetting and retiring of carbon credits.
- The EPD program operator, Global GreenTag, reviews the offsetting and retiring of carbon credits and publishes the embodied carbon values in the EPD.
Autex Acoustics' Environmental Product Declaration is freely available and presents transparent and third-party verified information about the life-cycle environmental impact of its products, including their embodied carbon values and their carbon offsets.
Scope
Emissions are measured from cradle to gate (A1 to A3) as defined by EPD standard EN 15804, and includes: raw material acquisition, extraction, refining, and processing, plus, scrap or material reuse; electricity generated from all sources with extraction, refining and transport, plus secondary fuel energy and recovery processes; and transport and manufacture of product packaging.
The process involves:
- Recycled PET bottles and Virgin PET are used in Polyester fibre manufacture.
- Virgin PET is processed.
- Fibre is made into Autex Acoustics® products.
- Distribution of raw fibre.
- Autex Acoustics® products are packaged and dispatched.
Methodology
EN 15804, ISO 14025, ISO 21930 Environmental Product Declaration.
Data was collected in accordance with EN ISO 14044:2006, 4.3.2, from primary sources including the manufacturer, suppliers and their publications on standards locations, logistics, technology, market share, management system and commitment to improved environmental performance.
Product composition
Non-woven acoustic panels are made with 98% polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibres and 2% polyethylene (PE) and a minimum of 45% recycled content.
