Garrett Super Scanner V

User Manual

Introduction

The Garrett Super Scanner V is a highly sensitive, state-of-the-art digital circuitry handheld metal detector, designed and manufactured in the United States under an ISO9001:2008 Quality management system. It offers both audible and silent vibrating alarm options, providing outstanding performance stability and extreme sensitivity for detecting the smallest objects. This fifth-generation model, first manufactured in 1984, is one of the most widely used hand-held metal detectors globally. This manual provides a summary guide to its basic operation.

Components

The Garrett Super Scanner V features the following key components:

[Diagram Description: A visual representation of the Super Scanner V handheld metal detector with labels pointing to its various parts: 3-Way Power Switch (Audible-Off-Silent), LED Alerts, Battery Cover, Safety Sling, Internal Sensitivity Adjustment (under grip), Detection Coil (Top and Bottom Surfaces), Earphone/Recharger Jack, and Interference Elimination Button.]

Components and Functions

3-Way Power Switch

This switch has two ON positions and a central OFF position.

Light Alerts

Audio Alert

Provides a clearly audible sound when metal is detected. This alert functions only when the Power Switch is in the forward (audible) position.

Vibrating Alert

The unit's handle vibrates when metal is detected. This alert functions when the Power Switch is in the backward (silent) position.

Interference Elimination Button

The detector is factory set for high sensitivity. If alarms are triggered by nearby metal objects like rebar, pressing and holding this button temporarily decreases sensitivity to ignore such interference. Releasing the button restores normal sensitivity.

Earphone/Recharger Jack

An optional earphone can be connected for silent operation or use in noisy environments. This jack is also used to recharge the rechargeable NiMH battery. ⚠️ Caution: Do not attempt to recharge conventional batteries, as this will damage the detector.

Safety Sling

A sling designed to assist the operator in securely and conveniently handling the Super Scanner.

Operating Instructions

Battery Cover

The battery cover is designed to remain securely in place but can be easily opened for battery changes without tools. Slide the cover back, tilt the detector, and the battery will slip out. Ensure the cover slides back easily; do not force it if the battery is inserted improperly. For storage exceeding 30 days, remove the battery.

Turning the Detector On

Set the Power Switch to either the forward or backward ON position. The Green Alert Light will illuminate, accompanied by an audio alert or vibration, confirming the unit is ON. The Green Alert Light remains illuminated until the unit is turned OFF.

Detecting Metal

The Super Scanner detects metal only while it is in motion. Move the instrument approximately one inch from the person or object being inspected. A sound or vibration, along with the Red Alert Light, will indicate metal detection. Operation is fully automatic; no manual retuning is required. The detector identifies all conductive metals, including ferrous, non-ferrous, and stainless steel.

Audible Operation

Press the power switch forward. A clear alert signal (audible tone or optional earphone) will sound when metal is detected. The red alert light will also appear.

Silent Vibrating Operation

Press the power switch backward. The detector handle will vibrate when metal is detected, but no sound will be heard. The red alert light will always appear.

Note: Do not affix metallic labels or any material that might cause the detector to alarm to the detection area of the Super Scanner. Doing so may cause an imbalance in the detection field and reduce scanning effectiveness.

Maintenance

Periodic maintenance should include a daily check of battery condition, verification that the Super Scanner detects metal, and confirmation that there are no loose or missing parts. A daily test standard can be established using Garrett's FTP or OTP test piece, or by selecting an object the size of a large coin and noting the expected detection distance. A formal test program may be established using the Test Kit HHMD p/n 1626100, available from Garrett.

Service Information

Battery Replacement

Slide back the battery cover (do not attempt to remove it), tilt the detector, and the battery will slip out. Replace with a fresh battery. If the battery is inserted improperly, the cover will not slide back; never force the cover. When the Super Scanner is to be stored for more than 30 days, remove the battery.

Internal Sensitivity Adjustment

For applications requiring sensitivity adjustments beyond the nominal factory setting, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the Super Scanner.
  2. Roll back the grip cover just below the nameplate.
  3. Insert a small flat or Phillips screwdriver into the potentiometer located within the exposed hole.
  4. Rotate the potentiometer counterclockwise to decrease sensitivity, or clockwise to increase sensitivity, until the desired detection of the test target is achieved.

Note: An excessive sensitivity setting may result in unstable operation (chatter) and excessive detection of surrounding metal. The sensitivity adjustment potentiometer is factory set to the nominal center (12:00 o'clock) position.

CAUTION: Always verify that the Super Scanner is set to the desired sensitivity level by testing with appropriate targets anytime the sensitivity adjustment is changed.

Factory Service

If your instrument requires factory service:

  1. Pack the detector carefully.
  2. Include full details concerning the problem, along with your name, address, and telephone number.
  3. Ship to:
    Garrett Metal Detectors
    Service Department
    1881 W. State St.
    Garland, TX 75042 USA

Allow approximately one week for technicians to examine and repair your instrument.

Detection Principles and Capabilities

The Super Scanner is an active hand-held metal detector with very high sensitivity to all metals, including ferrous, non-ferrous, and stainless steel. Detection and alarming occur when the instrument is passed in close proximity to metal objects.

The detection range is dependent upon the size and conductivity of the metal object; larger and more conductive objects yield a greater detection distance. The Super Scanner is factory preset to nominal sensitivity with no operator adjustments required, ensuring it is used at the proper operating level for the specific security need.

Should nearby, stationary metal objects (such as floor rebar, metal walls, or cell bars) cause interference to the scanning process, the Interference Elimination Button can be used to momentarily reduce sensitivity, allowing the detector to ignore interfering nearby metal and permit precise scanning of the individual or object.

When metal objects are encountered, the red LED is activated along with an audible alarm or vibration alarm (depending on user setting). An optional earphone may be used by the operator. Additional LEDs include green for "Power ON" status and amber for "Low Battery" indication.

Recommended Body Scanning Procedure

[Diagram Description: A visual guide for body scanning. It includes instructions to 'Double check pocket areas'. 'Front Scanning' shows the detector wand being moved across the front of a person's body. 'Back Scanning' shows the wand being moved across the back of a person's body. A note states: 'The Interference Elimination Button may be required if floor rebar is present. Note: Detection is only possible when the Super Scanner is moving over a metallic object.']
