2-3 Installing the CPU and CPU Cooler
CPU Installation Guidelines:
- Ensure motherboard compatibility with the CPU (check GIGABYTE website for support list).
- Always turn off and unplug the computer before installation.
- Align the CPU's pin one marking (triangle) or notches with the socket's alignment keys/markings. The CPU cannot be inserted incorrectly.
- Apply an even, thin layer of thermal grease on the CPU surface.
- Do not power on the computer without a CPU cooler installed to prevent overheating and damage.
- Set CPU host frequency according to specifications; avoid exceeding hardware limits.
A. Note the CPU Orientation
Align the triangle marking on the CPU with the corresponding marking on the LGA1700 CPU socket, or align the CPU notches with the socket's alignment keys.
B. Installing the CPU
- Gently press the CPU socket lever handle down and away from the socket.
- Lift the CPU socket locking lever completely.
- Use the finger tab on the metal load plate to lift it, opening the plate with the attached plastic protective cover.
- Hold the CPU by its edges, align its pin one marking (triangle) or notches with the socket's alignment keys/markings, and gently insert the CPU.
- Ensure the CPU is properly installed, then close the load plate. The plastic protective cover will pop off; remove it.
- Secure the lever under its retention tab to complete CPU installation.
- Important: Always replace the plastic protective cover when the CPU is not installed to protect the socket.
- Warning: Do not force the CPU socket locking lever if the CPU is not installed correctly, as this can damage the CPU and socket.
C. Installing the CPU Cooler
After installing the CPU, install the CPU cooler (refer to the cooler's manual for specific steps).
- Apply an even, thin layer of thermal grease on the installed CPU surface.
- Place the cooler onto the CPU, aligning its four push pins with the motherboard's pin holes. Push down diagonally on the pins.
- Connect the CPU cooler's power connector to the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard.
2-4 Installing the Memory
Memory Installation Guidelines:
- Ensure motherboard compatibility with the memory (recommended: same capacity, brand, speed, and chips). Refer to GIGABYTE's website for supported memory speeds and modules.
- Always turn off and unplug the computer before installing memory.
- Memory modules have a foolproof design; install in only one direction. If insertion is difficult, switch the direction.
Dual Channel Memory Configuration
This motherboard supports Dual Channel Technology with two memory sockets (Channel A: DDR5_A1, Channel B: DDR5_B1). Enabling Dual Channel mode doubles memory bandwidth. For Dual Channel mode, if using two memory modules, they should be of the same capacity, brand, speed, and chips.
2-5 Installing an Expansion Card
Expansion Card Installation Guidelines:
- Ensure motherboard compatibility with the expansion card. Consult the card's manual.
- Always turn off and unplug the computer before installing an expansion card.
Installation Steps:
- Locate a compatible expansion slot and remove the corresponding metal slot cover from the chassis back panel.
- Align the expansion card with the slot and press down until it is fully seated.
- Ensure the card is firmly seated.
- Secure the card's metal bracket to the chassis back panel with a screw.
- Replace the chassis cover(s).
- Turn on the computer. Adjust BIOS settings if necessary for the expansion card.
- Install the driver provided with the expansion card.
The motherboard features a PCIEX16 slot for expansion cards.

Always turn off and unplug the computer before clearing CMOS.
BAT (Battery): Provides power to CMOS for BIOS settings, date, and time when the computer is off. Replace when voltage is low.
Clearing CMOS via Battery: Turn off and unplug the computer. Gently remove the battery for one minute (or short battery holder terminals for 5 seconds). Replace the battery, plug in power, and restart.
Always turn off and unplug the computer before replacing the battery. Use an equivalent battery model. Contact the place of purchase or local dealer if unsure about replacement. Note battery orientation (+ side up). Dispose of used batteries according to local environmental regulations.
Chapter 3: BIOS Setup
BIOS (Basic Input and Output System) stores hardware parameters in CMOS. It performs Power-On Self-Test (POST), saves system parameters, and loads the operating system. BIOS Setup allows modification of system configuration and activation of features.
The CMOS is powered by the battery when the computer is off.
To access BIOS Setup, press the <Delete> key during POST.
BIOS Upgrade: Use GIGABYTE Q-Flash (easy upgrade/backup without OS) or @BIOS (Windows-based utility for online updates).
For Q-Flash and @BIOS instructions, search "BIOS Update Utilities" on GIGABYTE's website.
BIOS Flashing Warning: Flashing BIOS is risky. If your current BIOS works fine, it is recommended not to flash. Proceed with caution; inadequate flashing may cause system malfunction.
Settings Modification Warning: Avoid altering default settings unless necessary to prevent system instability. Incorrect settings may lead to boot failure. If this occurs, clear CMOS values to reset defaults.
Refer to Chapter 2 for Clear CMOS jumper details or search "Load Optimized Defaults" on GIGABYTE's website for CMOS clearing instructions.
For BIOS Setup details, visit: https://www.gigabyte.com/WebPage/819/z690-bios.html
Startup Screen and Function Keys
The GIGABYTE logo appears during startup.
Function Keys:
- <DEL>: BIOS SETUP\Q-FLASH - Press to enter BIOS Setup or Q-Flash utility.
- <F12>: BOOT MENU - Allows setting the first boot device without entering BIOS Setup. Use arrow keys to select, <Enter> to confirm. Setting is for one-time use only.
- <END>: Q-FLASH - Accesses Q-Flash utility directly.
Chapter 4: Installing the Operating System and Drivers
After setting up BIOS correctly, install the operating system. Upon OS installation, a dialog may prompt to download and install drivers and GIGABYTE applications via APP Center. Click "Install". (Ensure APP Center Download & Install is enabled in BIOS Setup: Settings\IO Ports\APP Center Download & Install Configuration).
When the End User License Agreement appears, click "Accept" to install APP Center. On the APP Center screen, select desired drivers and applications, then click "Install".
Ensure the system is connected to the Internet before installation.
