SoilVUE10 TDR Soil Moisture and Temperature Profile Sensor

Campbell Scientific

Product Overview

The SoilVUE™10 is a soil water content profile sensor powered by Campbell TrueWave™ TDR technology. This sensor measures soil moisture, electrical conductivity, and temperature. It was developed with environmental researchers and environmental monitoring networks in mind, representing advancements in in-situ soil measurement for applications requiring multiple measurements within a soil profile.

Campbell Scientific's proprietary TrueWave™ TDR technology utilizes a best-in-class rise time combined with advanced waveform analysis to accurately determine the true travel time of a high-frequency pulse. This process yields a high-resolution, smooth signal, ensuring defensible measurements that can be universally compared with other TDR measurements.

Benefits and Features

Detailed Description

The SoilVUE™10 comprises TDR circuitry connected to a series of six or nine helical wave guides integrated into its threaded design. This threaded construction enhances sensor contact with the soil, minimizing potential errors caused by air gaps. The TDR circuitry generates a short rise-time electromagnetic pulse, which is applied to the helical wave guides. The elapsed two-way travel time of this pulse is used to calculate the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding media, which is then used to determine the volumetric water content via a mixing model.

Installation is straightforward, requiring only a hole made by a standard 5 cm (2 in.) hand auger. Excavation machinery or specialized custom tools are not necessary.

Visual Description: The SoilVUE™10 sensor is a cylindrical device with a dark, textured surface featuring helical grooves or threads along its length. This design is intended to improve soil contact. A label on the sensor identifies it as "SoilVUE 10" and "Campbell Scientific".
