License Overview
Switch Engine 32.7 supports two license levels: Base and Premier. The Premier license builds upon the Base license features.
Diagram showing two pyramids. The left pyramid, labeled 'Universal Switch License Levels', has 'Premier' at the top and 'Base' below it, with supported models 5320, 5420, 5520, 5720, 7520, 7720 listed below. The right pyramid, labeled '4000 Series License Level', has 'Base' at the top, with supported models 4120, 4220 listed below.
In previous releases, license levels correlated as follows:
- Premier = Core
- Base = Advanced Edge + AVB
Overview for Universal Hardware Switches
This document details license levels and feature licenses for universal hardware switches and their supported features.
Switch Engine software supports the following license levels for universal hardware switches:
- Base: Included as standard. See Base License Features.
- Premier: See Premier License Features.
The Base license provides core features, while the Premier license adds advanced functionality.
Table 4: Standard and Upgrade Licenses for Universal Hardware Switches
Switch platform | Base | Premier |
---|---|---|
ExtremeSwitching 5320 | Standard | Upgrade |
ExtremeSwitching 5420 | Standard | Upgrade |
ExtremeSwitching 5520 | Standard | Upgrade |
ExtremeSwitching 5720 | Standard | Upgrade |
Extreme 7520 | Standard | Upgrade |
Extreme 7720 | Standard | Upgrade |
Feature Licenses
Additional capabilities can be enabled by purchasing feature licenses. See Feature Licenses.
Additional General License Information
Software licenses are stored in EEPROM and persist through reboots, upgrades, and reconfigurations. License keys are unique to the switch but transferable.
If a required license is missing or limits are reached, the system will display an error message.
Installing and Uninstalling Licenses on Universal Switches
This section covers obtaining and installing/uninstalling licenses.
Obtaining and Installing Licenses
Licenses can be activated using either:
- Manual activation via a license file from the Support Portal.
- Automated activation via ExtremeCloud IQ. Refer to ExtremeCloud IQ documentation for bulk activation.
For manual license generation and installation:
- Follow instructions on the Extreme Portal: Products > Products Home > ExtremeSwitching > Universal > EXOS > Activation Instructions.
- Load the license file using the
download
ortftp get
command. Example for USB copy:cp /usr/local/ext/old_name /usr/local/cfg/new_name
. License files can be placed in/usr/local/*
. - Install the license using the command:
install license file filename {slot slot}
. This command installs all features from the specified license file to the selected slot.
Uninstalling Licenses Temporarily
Temporarily uninstalling a license retains entitlement and allows reinstallation. Use the following command:
uninstall license file filename [{revoke revocation file} | withhold ] {slot slot}
using the withhold
option.
To uninstall a specific feature temporarily (e.g., MAC Security):
uninstall license product product_name [revoke revocation_file | withhold] {slot slot}
using the withhold
option.
Transferring Licenses
Permanently remove a license to transfer it to another switch, typically for RMA. Use the uninstall license file filename
command for .lic files or uninstall license product product_name
for specific products.
The revoke
option invalidates the license and generates a revocation certificate.
Displaying the Installed License Levels and Feature Licenses
Use the command show licenses {[slot slot |all]}{detail}
to display installed licenses.
Factory Default (Evaluation) License for Universal Hardware Switches
New universal hardware switches include a 30-day Factory Default (Evaluation) License, enabling all features except MACsec. This is equivalent to a Premier license.
After 30 days, without a Premier license installed, the switch reverts to Base license capabilities.
To extend the evaluation period:
- Enable trial license:
debug epm enable trial-license
. - Clear trial license:
debug epm clear trial-license
(requires reboot).
? Note: Enabling a new license requires clearing the trial license and rebooting.

Network Timing Feature License
The Network Timing Feature License is included with the Premier license and supports Precision Time Protocol (PTPv2) with transparent clock.
? Note: The Network-Clock module is required in addition to the Network Timing Feature License for PTPv2 support. This is not required for E2E Transparent Clock support in Universal Switches.
For more information on PTP, see "Overview of PTP" in the Switch Engine 32.7.1 User Guide.
MAC Security Feature License
Using the MAC Security (MACsec) feature requires a slot-based MACsec Feature License. Slot-based MACsec licenses have the following behaviors:

No License | License Installed | |
---|---|---|
Standalone Switch | The command show macsec is the only available command. MACsec cannot be configured or enabled. |

? Note: In a stack, a MACsec-capable module can be configured for MACsec even if the slot is not physically present or does not have a valid MACsec license installed.
