Why Corrosion Resistance Matters
Living in a coastal area presents the unique challenge of corrosive seacoast air. Salt water can be carried as far away as two miles from the coast. The severity of corrosion depends on the distance from the ocean, wind direction, relative humidity, and coil temperatures. Corrosion can also be caused by pollution, road salt, and irrigation systems.
Carrier's Answer to Corrosion – Welded Aluminum Technology
Prior to 2023, Carrier's coastal air conditioner and heat pump models used a copper tube and aluminum fins. To avoid galvanic corrosion between these two metals, Carrier transitioned all coastal models to its patented welded aluminum coil technology. This technology includes:
- A zinc cladding layer applied for improved corrosion resistance.
- A wall that is 71% thicker than current copper tubing.
- Up to 81% better projected lifespan compared to copper coils.
- Special heat shrink wrap applied to all factory-brazed copper-aluminum joints to isolate them from seacoast air.
- Extensive salt spray testing during development showed no degradation of fins after seven years (and counting).
The internal tube design has two patents.
Additional Protection
In addition to improving the coil, Carrier has made other enhancements to its coastal products to protect them from the corrosiveness of seacoast air:
- Thicker fan guard polyester powder coat.
- Thicker zinc plating.
- A two-layer coating process instead of one.
- Increased overall coating thickness.

Coastal Warranties Will Leave You Protected
In addition to an extensive standard warranty, Carrier's coastal air conditioners and heat pumps feature a five-year parts limited warranty for residential applications when the mechanism of failure is seacoast corrosion.
