1. Introduction
MC200CM, MC210CS, and MC220L are Gigabit Ethernet Media Converters. The FX port of MC220L supports hot-swappable functionality.
The converter mediates between a 1000Base-TX segment and a 1000Base-X segment. It is primarily designed for larger bandwidth and higher speed demanding workgroups that require expansion of the Gigabit Ethernet network.

- Requires an external power supply.
- FX port supports hot-swappable functionality (MC220L only).
Connectors and Network Cables Supported
The supported connectors and network cables are:
- Connectors: RJ-45, SC, LC.
- Network Cables: Cat.5 Twisted-Pair (TP), 9/125um Single-mode fiber, 62.5/125 & 50/125um Multi-mode fiber.
Model No. | Interface | Transmission Distance | Transmission Media | Output Center Wavelength |
---|---|---|---|---|
MC200CM | RJ45--SC | 0.55km(50/125µm) 0.22km(62.5/125µm) | Multi-mode Fiber, TP | 850nm |
MC210CS | RJ45--SC | 15km | Single-mode Fiber, TP | 1310nm |
MC220L | RJ45--LC | 0.55km/10km | Multi/single-mode | 850nm/1310nm |

3. Appearance Indication
3.1 LED Indicators
This converter features LED indicators to provide real-time status updates on network activity.
The indicators are:
- PWR: Power status (On: Power on, Off: Power off).
- FX LINK: FX Port link status (On: Valid link, Off: No valid link).
- TP LINK: TP Port link status (On: Valid link, Off: No valid link).
- TP RX: TP Port data reception (On: Receiving data, Off: Not receiving data).
Note: The 'TP' port mentioned in this guide refers to the TX port.
3.2 Switch
The switch controls the FX port mode:
- FORCE: The FX port operates in FORCE mode.
- AUTO: The FX port operates in Auto-Negotiation mode.
Note: Ensure the opposite end uses the same setting. When using two converters together, set both to FORCE mode. When connecting to other products (e.g., TL-SL2210WEB, TL-SL2428WEB), set to Auto-Negotiation mode. It is recommended to leave switches on AUTO. Reset the converter after changing switch settings for the changes to take effect.
4. Installation Guides
4.1 Gigabit Ethernet Media Converter
- The SC fiber connector of MC200CM transmits/receives data using 850nm short wave laser on multi-mode fiber.
- The SC fiber connector of MC210CS transmits/receives data using 1310nm short wave laser on single-mode fiber.
Diagram: Illustrates transmission and reception of data on different fiber types.
Note: Two MC200CM or two MC210CS units can cooperate. MC220L can be used with two kinds of SFP modules: single-mode or multi-mode.

Note: Two MC220L units with the same SFP module can cooperate.
Diagram: Illustrates data transmission between MC220L and MC200CM/MC210CS.
Note: When connecting MC220L to MC200CM or MC210CS, the SFP module in MC220L must match the mode and wavelength of the opposite end. The connection fiber must be LC-SC fiber.
Model No. | MC220L connect with | MC200CM | MC210CS |
---|---|---|---|
Transmission Media | SFP module | 850nm, Multi-mode | 1310nm, Single-mode |
4.2 Configuration
To effectively expand a Gigabit Ethernet network, consider these examples:
- Place two converters back-to-back between end devices.
Note: For correct connections between two Media Converters (e.g., two MC200CM, two MC210CS, two MC220L, or one MC220L with another MC200CM/MC210CS), refer to the connection diagrams in section 4.1.
- Connect a converter directly between a 1000Base-TX network and a fiber optic (FX) device.
4.3 Installation Procedure
Use a fiber cable to connect two converters, or connect a converter with a 1000Base-FX Device.
- Connection of a Converter and a 1000Base-TX Device (HUB or Switch): Ensure the Cat.5 twisted pair cable (Category-5) between the 1000Base-TX device and the converter is less than 100 meters. Connect one end of the Cat.5 cable to the converter's RJ45 jack and the other end to the 1000Base-TX device's RJ45 jack.
- Connection of two Converters or a Converter and a 1000Base-FX Device: Use a SC fiber cable to connect the SC connectors of the two converters or the SC connector of a converter and a 1000Base-FX Device.
- Turn on the power.
4.4 Install Media Converter into MC1400
Remove the two screws on either side of the Chassis to install the retainer as follows:
- Turn off the switch power, remove the front guard on the chassis. Insert the Media Converter into the chassis slot and use the locking knob to secure it tightly.
- Turn on the switch power. The Media Converter's POWER LED should illuminate. The unit can now operate as a boxlike Media Converter of the MC series.
5. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues during installation or use, follow these steps. If problems persist, contact your dealer or TP-LINK technical support.
- PWR LED is off: Indicates a power error. Check that the power lead is connected correctly.
- LINK LED (TP port) is off: Confirm there is no open circuit with the cable and ensure the device connection type is 1000M.
- LINK LED (FX port) is off:
- Check that the fiber mode and fiber type match the Gigabit transceivers.
- Verify there is no open circuit.
- Check fiber loss using a Fiber-Optic Tester to avoid excessive signal degradation.
- Ensure the FX port is connected correctly: The transmitting port (TX) of the local end should connect to the receiving port (RX) of the outlying end, and the receiving port (RX) of the local end should connect to the transmitting port (TX) of the outlying end.
