Introduction

The Cobra 29 has been designed to provide high level, trouble-free performance in the Citizens Radio Service. The service includes 23 channels with frequencies ranging from 26.965 to 27.255 MHz.

To ensure maximum performance, please read the following control descriptions and operating instructions carefully.

Note: These transceivers are designed for Class "D" operation in the 11-meter Citizens Radio Service and must comply with FCC regulations. Operators are required to understand Part 95 of the FCC regulations and obtain a license and call sign before operating.

Warning: Transmitter section adjustments must be performed by a qualified technician with a valid first or second class FCC radio telephone license.

Section I: Installation

Location

Choose a convenient location for the transceiver and microphone bracket, ensuring it does not interfere with vehicle operation. For automobiles, mounting under the dash is common.

Mounting and Connection

The Cobra 29 includes a universal mounting bracket. Secure the transceiver in the bracket with the provided bolts, allowing for angle adjustment. The bracket must be mounted securely and provide a good electrical connection to the vehicle's chassis.

  1. Determine the mounting location. Use the bracket as a template to mark bolt hole positions. Ensure no obstructions exist before drilling.
  2. Connect the antenna cable plug to the standard UHF (SO-239) receptacle on the rear panel.
  3. Connect the DC power input wire (with fuse) to a +12 V DC source. For vehicles, this is typically the accessory contact on the ignition switch to prevent accidental battery drain.
  4. Connect the black wire to -12 V DC (vehicle chassis). Ensure good electrical contact by removing any paint from the connection point.
  5. Mount the microphone bracket within easy reach of the transceiver.

Note on Positive Ground Vehicles: In positive ground systems, connect the red wire to the chassis and the black wire to the ignition switch.

Ignition Noise Interference

Electrical noise from the vehicle's ignition and generator can interfere with reception, especially at low signal levels. While the Cobra 29 has noise blanking and limiting features, severe interference may require professional assistance to locate and correct the source.

Antenna

A properly matched antenna system is crucial for maximizing transmission distance. For mobile installations, a non-directional, vertically polarized quarter-wavelength whip antenna is recommended for reliable operation and range. Shorter loaded whips offer a more compact option for shorter distances.

Mobile whip antennas utilize the vehicle's metal body as a ground plane. A standard antenna connector (Type SO-239) is provided on the transceiver.

For installations not on a metal surface, a separate ground wire to a good metal electrical ground is necessary. For boats, a ground plate or a steel hull is required for efficient operation. Consult a dealer for proper grounding systems and electrolysis prevention.

Base Station Operation

For home or office use (110-120V AC), a separate power supply rated at 2 amps and 13.8 volts DC is required. Connect the transceiver's red (+) and black (-) leads to the corresponding terminals of the AC power supply.

Note: Do not connect the transceiver directly to 110V AC. Any standard Citizens Band antenna (beam, dipole, ground plane, or vertical) can be used for base station operation. A ground plane vertical antenna offers the most uniform horizontal coverage.

Remote Speaker

The external speaker jack (EXT. SPKR) on the rear panel allows for remote receiver monitoring. The external speaker should have 8 Ohms impedance and be rated for at least 3 watts. Connecting an external speaker automatically disconnects the internal speaker.

Public Address (PA)

To use the PA system, connect an external 8 Ohm, 3 watt speaker to the PA SPKR. jack on the rear panel. Position the speaker away from the microphone to prevent acoustic feedback, especially at high volume levels.

Section II: Operation

Controls and Indicators

The Cobra 29 features nine controls and three indicators on the front panel.

Front panel layout of the Cobra 29, showing controls and indicators.

A. Control Functions

  1. DYNAMIKE: Adjusts modulation level during transmit. Functions as volume control in PA mode.
  2. OFF/ON/VOLUME: Turns the unit on and sets the listening volume. Turn clockwise to power on.
  3. SQUELCH: Eliminates receiver background noise. Adjust clockwise until noise disappears, then slightly further if needed. Avoid over-adjusting, which can block weak signals.
  4. RF GAIN: Optimizes signal reception, especially in strong signal areas. Reduce gain by turning counterclockwise.
  5. DELTA-TUNE: Fine-tunes received signals for clarity or to reduce adjacent channel interference. Adjust for the clearest audio or lowest interference.
  6. CHANNEL SELECTOR: Selects one of the 23 available CB channels. Channel 9 is reserved for emergency communications.
  7. ANL SWITCH: Activates the Automatic Noise Limiter in the audio circuits.
  8. NB SWITCH: Activates the RF Noise Blanker, effective against repetitive impulse noise like ignition interference.
  9. PA-CB SWITCH: Selects between Public Address (PA) and Citizens Band (CB) modes. The PA function requires an external speaker.

B. Indicators

  1. PWR/S METER: Displays relative transmitter power during transmit and input signal strength during receive. Illuminated when power is on.
  2. MOD LIGHT: A green light that flashes with modulation during transmit, indicating the modulation level.
  3. TX LIGHT: A red light that activates when the transmitter is keyed, indicating RF output.

C. Press-to-Talk Microphone

The included low-impedance dynamic microphone controls the receiver and transmitter via the press-to-talk switch. Hold the microphone about two inches from your mouth and speak clearly in a normal voice when transmitting. The microphone connector is on the left side of the unit.

D. Operating Procedure to Receive

  1. Set the PA-CB switch to the CB position and turn the RF GAIN control fully clockwise.
  2. Turn the unit ON by rotating the VOLUME control clockwise until it clicks.
  3. Set the VOLUME for a comfortable listening level.
  4. Adjust the SQUELCH control clockwise until background noise just disappears.
  5. Select the desired channel using the CHANNEL SELECTOR.

E. Operating Procedure to Transmit

  1. Select the desired channel.
  2. If the channel is clear, press the push-to-talk switch on the microphone and speak clearly. The TX light will indicate output power.

F. Accessory Circuit Operation

  1. ANL: Slide the ANL switch to the ANL position to activate noise reduction.
  2. NB: For ignition noise, slide the NB switch to the NB position to activate the noise blanker.
  3. RF GAIN: In strong signal areas, reduce RF gain by turning the control counterclockwise to improve reception quality. SQUELCH may need readjustment.
  4. PUBLIC ADDRESS (PA) OPERATION: Connect an 8 Ohm, 3 watt speaker to the PA SPKR. jack. Ensure physical separation between the microphone and speaker to prevent acoustic feedback.

Section III: Maintenance and Adjustment

The transceiver is designed for reliability in mobile environments. Use only identical parts for replacements. Refer to the schematic and parts list.

Warning: FCC regulations prohibit unauthorized adjustments of the radio frequency section by operators. Only licensed technicians may tune the transmitter.

Adjustment

The transceiver is factory aligned. For optimum power transfer with a 50 Ohm antenna, adjustments to the transmitter output circuit may be necessary. These adjustments should only be performed by qualified personnel using an appropriate RF wattmeter.

Note: If performance issues persist after reviewing operating instructions, contact a qualified service technician or refer to the warranty service instructions.
