Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona
Welcome to the world of Rolex. This document provides information on the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona.
Introduction
The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is the benchmark timepiece for automotive and speed enthusiasts. Its legendary reliability, with a central chronograph seconds hand, 30-minute and 12-hour counters, and a tachymetric bezel, makes it the ideal instrument for measuring short intervals and calculating average speed.
The dial's excellent legibility benefits from the Chromalight display, with elements coated in a long-lasting luminescent material.
The 40 mm Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to 100 metres, is an example of robustness and reliability. The Triplock winding crown, with a triple waterproofing system, protected by the shoulders cut into the case middle, screws down against the case like the chronograph pushers. The sapphire crystal is virtually scratchproof.
The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona houses a self-winding mechanical movement, entirely produced by Rolex.
Getting Started
For the first use of a Rolex watch, or after a period of non-use, manual winding is necessary. This ensures the precision and correct functioning of the timekeeping. To manually wind the watch, unscrew the crown completely and turn it clockwise (the opposite direction is inactive); wind at least 25 turns for sufficient initial winding. The watch will then wind automatically when worn on the wrist. Carefully screw the crown back against the case to ensure its water resistance.
Positions of the Crown:
- Position 0 (screwed down): The crown and pushers are completely screwed down against the case. In this position, the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is guaranteed waterproof up to 100 metres.
- Position 1 (manual winding): The crown is unscrewed. To manually wind the watch, turn the crown clockwise (the opposite direction is inactive). For initial winding, perform at least 25 turns.
- Position 2 (time setting): The crown is unscrewed and pulled out one click. The small seconds hand stops, allowing for precise time setting. To set the time, turn the crown in one direction or the other.
Chronograph Function
To operate the chronograph, follow these steps:
- Unscrew the pushers completely by turning them counterclockwise.
- Ensure the chronograph seconds hand is stopped. If necessary, press the upper pusher to stop it.
- Press the lower pusher to reset the seconds hand and chronograph counters.
- Press the upper pusher to start the chronograph.
- Press the upper pusher again to stop the chronograph.
- Read the elapsed time. The central seconds hand indicates the elapsed seconds, allowing for precise reading. The two counters at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock on the dial show the elapsed minutes and hours respectively.
- Screw the pushers back in by turning them clockwise.
Reading Average Speed
The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona allows you to read average speed over a given distance (1 km, 1 mile...).
To read average speed, follow these steps:
- Unscrew the pushers completely by turning them counterclockwise.
- Ensure the chronograph seconds hand is stopped. If necessary, press the upper pusher to stop it.
- Press the lower pusher to reset the seconds hand and chronograph counters.
- At the start of the distance to be covered, press the upper pusher to start the chronograph.
- When the distance has been covered, press the upper pusher to stop the chronograph.
- Read the average speed on the graduated bezel indicated by the chronograph seconds hand (in units of chosen distance/hour).
- Screw the pushers back in by turning them clockwise.
Example: For a distance of 1 km, the average speed shown in our example is 160 km/h.
The Easylink Rapid Extension System
To ensure maximum comfort for the wearer in any situation, Rolex has created the Easylink extension system for some of its models. This exclusive, patented concept allows the bracelet length to be adjusted by approximately 5 mm without the need for any tools.

Rolex Watch Maintenance
Thanks to Rolex's expertise, your watch requires little care. To restore the watch's brilliance, use a microfiber cloth. Periodic washing with a soft brush, water, and soap is recommended. After a swim in the sea, it is essential to rinse it with fresh water to remove salt and sand.
Before performing these operations, ensure the crown is completely screwed down against the case to guarantee the watch's total water resistance.
After-Sales Service
Rolex after-sales service ensures the preservation of your watch's aesthetic characteristics, as well as its precision, reliability, and water-resistance performance.
Rolex mechanical movements require various high-performance lubricants developed and fine-tuned by Rolex to ensure optimal calibre functioning and precision. Over time, the properties of lubricants undergo changes that can compromise running regularity. To verify the watch's perfect water resistance, rigorous technical checks are also essential.
For these reasons, we recommend having your watch serviced periodically by an authorized dealer. During this service, every part of your Rolex watch is disassembled and meticulously cleaned. Components that no longer meet Rolex's functional and aesthetic criteria are then replaced with certified parts.
During reassembly, the watchmaker performs controlled lubrication of the movement and checks the watch's correct functioning. To restore their original brilliance, the case and metal bracelet are completely restored. Each Rolex watch then undergoes a series of rigorous technical checks to verify and guarantee its water resistance, power reserve, and precision.
Upon completion of this procedure, your watch benefits from a service guarantee.

Superlative Chronometer Certification
The green seal accompanying your Rolex watch certifies its status as a Superlative Chronometer. This exclusive title attests that the timepiece has successfully passed a series of specific final controls conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories, integrating the official COSC certification of its movement. These unique tests, which particularly concern chronometric precision, water resistance, automatic winding, and reliability, redefine the standards for performance, making Rolex the benchmark for excellence in mechanical watches.
