3. Product Overview
3.1 Product Introduction
The P35 Piezo Tip/Tilt Platform offers several advantages:
High performance piezo stack:
The P35 piezo tip/tilt platform is driven by a highly reliable ceramic actuator with a fully insulated structure, providing superior performance and service life compared to traditional actuators. The insulating layer effectively prevents piezoelectric ceramic damage from moisture, ensuring stability even in extreme circumstances. Unlike traditional driving mechanisms, it has no transmission parts or friction, offering characteristics like no rebound, maintenance-free operation, and wear-free performance.
Flexible hinge structure:
Adopting a flexible hinge mechanism, the P35 Piezo Tip/Tilt Platform provides no friction and high positioning accuracy. A flexible hinge is unaffected by static and dynamic friction, relying on the elastic deformation of metal materials (e.g., steel) without rolling or sliding parts. This flexible unit has very high load capacity and stiffness, requires no maintenance, and is suitable for a wide range of temperatures without needing lubricating oil.
Strain sensor:
Strain sensors detect position information through their own expansion. Fixed in proper positions within the transmission part, they measure the displacement of the moving part. This indirect measurement method uses a measuring lever, guide hinge, or piezoelectric ceramic stack to determine the moving platform's displacement. The P35 Piezo Tip/Tilt Platform features a travel range of up to 43mrad in X/Y, fast response speed, high repeatable positioning accuracy, and high flexibility, making it easy to operate and suitable for various applications. The product can also be customized to specific needs.
3.2 Principle
The piezo control principle is illustrated in Figure 1. The P35 Tip/Tilt Platform (two-axis motion) is based on a parallel kinematic design with coplanar axes and a moving platform. Four piezo actuators are positioned at 90° intervals, utilizing paired differential control distribution. Two pairs of differentially driven actuators provide the highest achievable angular stability over a wide temperature range. Its tilt motion is achieved by two pairs of piezo actuators operating in a push-pull manner, controlled by a bridge connection circuit. The deflection angle of the P35 Tip/Tilt Platform can be calculated as follows:
Figure 1: P35 control principle diagram showing two channels (Channel 1, Channel 2) connected to piezo actuators, with a constant voltage source.
Figure 2: Schematic of a Tip/Tilt Platform showing two piezo actuators (PZT1, PZT2) and their positions relative to a pivot point 'a'.
The deflection angle in X is calculated as: θx = ΔX (LPZT1 - LPZT2) / a
Wherein:
- LPZT1 - PZT1 Displacement
- LPZT2 - PZT2 Displacement
- a - The distance between the two piezo actuators.
Similarly, the deflection angle in Y is calculated as: θy = ΔY (LPZT3 - LPZT4) / b
Dynamic characteristics of P35 Tip/Tilt Platform:
The operating frequency of the P35 depends on its resonant frequency. To estimate the resonant frequency after loading a mirror (moving surface and mirror), the moment of inertia of the mirror must be considered. The moment of inertia of a cylindrical mirror is calculated as: Im = m/12 * (3R² + 3H² + 4T²). The moment of inertia of a rectangular mirror is calculated as: Im = m/12 * (L² + H² + 12T²).
Wherein:
- m - Quality of mirror
- Im - The moment of inertia of mirror
- L - Length of the mirror perpendicular to the rotation axis
- H - Thickness of mirror
- T - Distance between the axis of rotation and the surface of the platform
- R - Radius of mirror
The resonant frequency after loading a mirror can be calculated using the unloaded resonant frequency and the moment of inertia of the mirror. The calculation formula is as follows:
f' = f0 / sqrt(1 + Im / I0)
Wherein:
- f' - Resonant frequency after loading mirror
- I0 - The moment of inertia of the unloaded moving surface
- f0 - Unloaded operating Frequency
- Im - The moment of inertia of the mirror
