This document summarizes the lighting and receptacle control requirements for commercial buildings in California, effective January 1, 2026. It provides suggested code-compliant solutions based on total installed cost, simplicity of design, and basic functional needs for various spaces.

Daylight responsive control Sensor adjusts lighting in response to available daylight for sidelight and skylight zones. Receptacle control At least 50% of receptacles shall automatically turn OFF based on typical occupancy or vacancy (≤ 20 min). Controlled receptacle within 6 ft of each uncontrolled receptacle. One controlled receptacle per workstation in open offices with modular furniture. 130.5 (d) N/A N/A
Demand response Buildings with > 4,000 W lighting power in multi-level controlled spaces must have demand responsive controls to reduce lighting power in response to an OpenAPR signal. Sidelighting (Window): Illustrates daylight zones based on window head height (HW) and average ceiling height (HC). Primary daylight zone is 1.0 x HW, secondary is 2.0 x HW. A section view shows the relationship between window height and ceiling height.

Toplighting (Skylight): Illustrates daylight zones based on skylight placement and average ceiling height (HC). Primary daylight zone is 1.0 x HW, secondary is 2.0 x HW. A section view and plan view show the skylight zone.

Note on Egress and Emergency Lighting: For areas used as a path of egress or for emergency lighting, verify compliance with your local authority having jurisdiction.

Acceptance Testing: Functional testing is required for all new construction applications to ensure control hardware and software are calibrated, programmed, and functioning properly (Section 130.4).
