This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to two conditions: (1) this device may not cause interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference. The Bluetooth antenna cannot be removed or replaced by the user. General Precautions

  • Do not turn up the volume so high that you cannot hear your surroundings.
  • Use caution or temporarily discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
  • Do not operate mobile video equipment while driving; prioritize safe driving and the safety of others.
  • Set volume low and slowly increase until comfortable without distortion or ear discomfort.
  • In case of smoke, strange noises, odor, or other abnormal signs, immediately turn off the power and consult your dealer or an authorized BOSS AUDIO SYSTEMS Service Center. Using the product in this condition may cause permanent system damage.

Installation Precautions

  • BOSS Audio Systems does not recommend self-installation. Professional installation by a certified professional is recommended.
  • Always consult with a professional installer.
  • Do not attempt to install or service this product yourself. Installation or servicing by untrained persons can be dangerous and may expose them to electric shock, injury, or other hazards.
  • Refer any repairs to a qualified BOSS AUDIO SYSTEMS Service Center.

Before Installing

To avoid potential shorts in the electrical system, disconnect the (−) battery cable before installation. Use this unit with a 12-volt battery and negative grounding only. Failure to do so may result in fire or malfunction.

Product Safety: It is against Federal and Local laws for video to be viewed by the driver while the vehicle is in motion. This video product was intended to be used with the parking brake safety feature. Video cannot be seen without the proper parking brake powered connection. Tampering or disabling this feature will void any and all warranty. Please check with a professional installer to have your product installed properly.

Images and Video Usage

Watching video while driving is against Federal, State, and Local laws. Drive safely, know and obey traffic rules. Watching this screen and making selections while driving can lead to a serious accident. Check surroundings for safety while camera images are displayed. Do not use features of this product while driving if it cannot be operated safely and legally. Before operating smartphone Apps, read safety instructions in your Owner's Manual. When using navigation Apps, stay alert to observe real-world conditions.

Basic Product Operation

Control Details

The front panel features the following controls:

  • 1. Microphone: ? For voice commands and calls.
  • 2. Power/Home: ? Turns the unit on/off or returns to the home screen.
  • 3. Voice Recognition: ?️ Activates voice assistant (e.g., Siri, Google Assistant).
  • 4. Volume Control: ? Use '+' and '-' buttons for volume adjustment. Touch for quick changes, touch and hold for faster adjustment.
  • 5. Mute/Screen Off: ? Mutes audio or turns the display off.

Rear Details

The rear panel includes various connection ports:

  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto: USB connection for smartphone integration.
  • USB: For media playback and charging (2A Charging). *Lightning Cable Not Included.
  • Radio Antenna Input: Connects to the vehicle's AM/FM antenna.
  • GPS Antenna Input: Connects to the GPS antenna for navigation.

  • Front, Rear, Sub outputs: RCA outputs for connecting amplifiers.

Product Basics

Power On/Standby

  • To Power ON: Touch the Power/Home button once.
  • To enter Standby: Touch and hold the Power/Home button. The LED will slowly pulse on and off in Standby Mode.

Volume

  • Adjust Volume: Touch the '+' or '-' buttons once for small adjustments. Touch and hold for quicker volume changes.

Mute

  • To Mute: Touch the Mute/Screen Off button.

Display Off/On

  • To turn Display Off: Touch and hold the Mute/Screen Off button.
  • To turn Display On: Touch the display.

Using and Caring for the Touch Screen

Use: This head unit uses a Capacitive Touchscreen, similar to high-end mobile devices. Use and care for it accordingly. If fingers are wet or sweaty, the touchscreen may not function properly. Do not allow sharp objects to contact the screen glass.

Care and Cleaning: To clean the screen, use a dry microfiber cloth. Do not use ammonia, window cleaner, or other household chemicals. Abrasives should not be used.

Product Setup (Date & Time)

Setup Option A: Apple CarPlay Method

Connect your Apple® device using a Lightning® cable to the CarPlay USB port. This will automatically set up the time and date. The user must manually set the Time Zone. The default is Pacific Time Zone.

Setup Option B: Date and Time

Navigate to Settings > General > Date & Time to manually set the time and date.

Additional Setup: Refer to page 27 for General > Language, Audio > EQ, Other Audio Settings, and Display > Illumination, Brightness, LED settings.

Navigating the Menus

The system offers various modes accessible from the main screen:

  • Radio: Displays tuner information, band, frequency, and scan options.
  • Streaming: For audio playback from connected devices.
  • Phone: Access to dial pad, history, contacts, and call management.
  • Media: For USB playback and browsing media files.
  • Apple CarPlay: Interface for compatible iPhones.
  • Android Auto: Interface for compatible Android devices.
  • Camera: Displays front or rear camera feeds.
  • Settings: Access to system configurations, audio, display, and connectivity options.

The main interface allows switching between these modes by touching their respective icons. Navigation within modes often involves touch, swipe, or touch-and-hold gestures.

Apple CarPlay

Using Apple CarPlay

When in doubt, park the vehicle and engage the parking brake before performing functions. Refer to page 9 for other cautions and warnings.

Connecting to USB Port

  1. Connect the CarPlay compatible device via a Lightning® cable (not included).
  2. The iPhone will load the CarPlay function.
  3. On the display, the CarPlay interface will illuminate green; touch it to enter the CarPlay menu.
  4. To return to the product home menu, touch the BOSS Audio Systems logo.

Wireless Connection

When connected to Bluetooth, CarPlay will be prompted to load. The iPhone will load the CarPlay function. On the display, the CarPlay interface will illuminate green; touch it to enter the CarPlay menu.

ℹ️ NOTE: The product's Bluetooth will turn OFF automatically when CarPlay is in use. Hands-free phoning will function through the CarPlay feature.

When using CarPlay, pairing your iPhone via Bluetooth is not necessary; the USB cable connection enables this feature. If other devices are connected via Bluetooth, they will be disconnected for the duration of CarPlay use.

Gestures & Control

Basic controls include:

  • Touch: ? Tap to select or activate.
  • Swipe: ↔️ Slide finger across the screen for scrolling or changing views.
  • Dragging: ?? Press and hold an item, then move it to a new position.

Other gestures and controls might differ on each App.

ℹ️ NOTE: Volume control is handled exclusively by the product.

CarPlay Display Setup

  1. Using your iPhone: Settings > General > CarPlay.
  2. Touch and hold each App icon to move it.
  3. To remove an App, touch the '-' icon next to it.
ℹ️ NOTE: Only Apps with the • icon can be removed from CarPlay.

For disabling other Apps, see page 15.

How to Disable Apps

Using your iPhone: Navigate to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps, then toggle off specific apps like CarPlay.

Android Auto

Using Android Auto

ℹ️ NOTE: To complete setup properly, the Parking Brake status wire must be connected. See page 38.
⚠️ WARNING: For your safety, the setup process must be accomplished while the vehicle is parked and the parking brake engaged.

Android Auto App

  1. Using your Android device, download the Android Auto app on Google Play.

Minimum Requirements: Android 8.0 Lollipop. For a list of compatible devices, visit https://www.android.com/auto/.

Updating Related Apps

During the first startup and setup of the Android Auto app, Maps, Music, and Google apps will install/update automatically.

Connecting to USB Port

  1. Connect the Android compatible device via the appropriate USB cable (not included).
  2. The Android device will load the Android Auto function.
  3. Bluetooth will connect automatically when setup is completed.
  4. To return to the product home menu, touch the BOSS Audio Systems logo.

Wireless Connection

When connected to Bluetooth, CarPlay may be prompted to load (this section seems to have a typo and should refer to Android Auto). The Android device will load the Android Auto function. Bluetooth will connect automatically when setup is completed. To return to the product home menu, touch the BOSS Audio Systems logo.

Android Auto Permissions

Several features can be allowed or denied access to customize usability. Access can always be modified in Settings on the Android device.

  • Grant Permissions: Allows Android Auto to send location and calendar data to Google for local info (weather, reminders) and voice commands, phone calls, messages.
  • Allow Android Auto to read and write phone call log? (Read call logs)
  • Allow Android Auto to access this device's location? (Allows Maps to determine device location)
  • Allow Android Auto to send and view SMS messages? (Send SMS messages, use all other permissions)
  • Allow Android Auto to record audio?
  • Allow Android Auto to access your calendar?
  • Allow Android Auto to access your contacts? (Read contacts)

Permission needed: Google Maps in Android Auto requires location permission to work effectively. Review this permission in Settings.

Bluetooth®

Setup & Connection

Phone Menu

To initiate Bluetooth setup:

  • Navigate to the Hands-free menu (pg. 19).
  • Touch 'Search' to begin searching for devices.
ℹ️ NOTE: CarPlay must not be active. If it is, disconnect the iPhone to start Bluetooth. Compatibility with all mobile devices is not guaranteed. Please read the user's guide of your mobile device.
⚠️ CAUTION: For safety, setup should be done while the vehicle is parked and the parking brake is engaged.

First Time Pairing

Mobile Device: Search for "BOSS AUDIO BVCP9850W_XXXX".

  • iOS Devices: Settings > Bluetooth.
  • Android Devices: Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
ℹ️ NOTE: XXXX is data randomly generated by the unit for certification. A passcode is generated and displayed on both the head unit and mobile device for secure pairing. Touch 'Pair' to confirm.

Every time the product is powered ON, the mobile device will automatically connect if within range.

ℹ️ NOTE: Once paired and connected, the device list displays available Bluetooth profiles.

Contacts and History

To Download Phone book:

  1. Touch Contact > Download.

Contacts are stored once downloaded.

To Download History:

The phone book will be automatically synchronized after downloading.

Device Status

Battery strength and signal strength are displayed on the top right of the home menu.

PHONE - Calling

Making & Receiving Calls

  1. Dialing from the dial pad.
  2. History: Touch to make a call.
  3. Contacts: Touch the contact name.
  4. History: Choose the history call record.
  • To end a call, touch ?.
  • To mute a call, touch ?.
  • Dial pad: To use the dial pad while on a call, touch ?.

Searching History

Swipe Up or Down to search.

History

  1. Outgoing Call ↗️

Private Mode

When a call needs to be transferred to the mobile device:

  • Touch ? to switch the mobile device.
  • Touch ? to return to hands-free mode.

Call Waiting

To accept another call, touch ?.

To toggle between calls, touch 'Call 1' or 'Call 2'.

ℹ️ NOTE: Active calls will be illuminated green.

To End a call, touch ?.

Searching Contacts

Contacts must be downloaded to search. Touch ? ?.

Audio Streaming

To play media through Bluetooth, the mobile device must be Paired and Connected to the BVCP9850W_XXXX. See page 20.

Touch ? STREAMING. The music will play automatically.

Media Player (Bluetooth)

Playback access is also available through the Media Player. Touch ▶️.

Track Control

ℹ️ NOTE: Profiles required for audio playback and control on the mobile device: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile).
ℹ️ NOTE: For best performance, your mobile device volume setting should be set to maximum. All volume adjustments for the system should be controlled from the product. The unit will recall the last volume setting on your mobile device every time it connects.

Formats

Playback is supported from the mobile device with any format it can play. Audio will only be played by the product.

Display

Video cannot be viewed on the unit. Track info will be displayed when available: Track, Album, and Artist. Album art is supported via Bluetooth playback.

AUX IN/CAMERA

External Source

Playback (Audio Only)

Touch ? AUX IN. Media must be controlled from the external device. Track functions are not controlled from the product.

ℹ️ NOTE: To adjust the volume level properly, the carry-in device volume should be set between 50% - 75%. The volume level should remain at that level for the remainder of the time it is connected to the product.
⚠️ WARNING: Never rely solely on the rear view camera; always check your surroundings before proceeding. Images may appear reversed. Do not use features of this product if it cannot be operated safely and legally. Rear and Front view camera can be displayed on demand. Touch ? CAMERA.

To return to the Home screen, touch ?.

ℹ️ NOTE: The Camera Trigger Output wire must be connected for Camera source to function.

Reverse View

When the vehicle is put into reverse gear, the camera will display the image on the screen.

Rear View Delay

Due to varying vehicle configurations, the rear view trigger or front view trigger can be delayed to best suit the vehicle. See Settings page 27. Default setting: 0 Sec Delay.

ℹ️ NOTE: The rear or front view camera will still function normally if the product is in standby mode.

Settings

Audio

System Tone

Touch ? to adjust EQ bands. Default Setting: OFF.

Loud

Enhances and gently boosts low and high frequencies. Touch ?. Default Setting: OFF.

Subwoofer

The level and filter can be adjusted for the Sub pre-amp output. Level: -8 - +8 dB. Default Setting: 0dB. Touch ? for filter settings (80 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz @ 12dB/Oct).

Volume

Settings are for default volumes for Hands-free. Media Player is a global setting for media.

Source Level

The level can be adjusted for different source outputs. Touch ?.

Audio Effect

Preset EQ options include: User, Pop, Blues, Classical, Jazz, Electronic, Rock, Country.

Balance/Fader

Left/Right Balance: Touch ↔️. Swipe for quick adjustment.

Front/Rear Fader: Touch Swipe ↔️. Swipe for quick adjustment.

General

Date & Time

Time Zone: Adjust to correctly display time. Default Setting: (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US).

  • Date: Touch ?.

24H Mode

Touch ? to toggle between ON/OFF. Default Setting: OFF.

Auto Adjust

Touch to change language. Options: English (Default), Spanish.

Wallpaper

Touch ?. User can change the background.

Factory Settings

⚠️ CAUTION: Restoring factory settings will reset all settings and presets.

Illumination

Day Brightness

Adjust day mode brightness value. Touch ⏩️ ⏪️.

Night Brightness

Adjust night mode brightness. Touch ⏩️ ⏪️. When vehicle lights are on, illumination changes to night brightness automatically.

Gamma

Adjustable for both day and night settings. Touch ⏩️ ⏪️.

LED Animation

Will cycle through all colors on LED touch buttons. Default Setting: ON. Touch ? to toggle ON/OFF.

LED Color

Adjust button lights in different colors. Touch ?.

Illumination Default

To restore illumination settings to default, touch ?. This will restore all display settings.

Device

Bluetooth Setting

Bluetooth Power: Touch ? to toggle ON/OFF. Default Setting: ON.

ℹ️ NOTE: Bluetooth will turn OFF automatically when CarPlay is in use. If other devices are connected via Bluetooth, they will be disconnected for the duration of CarPlay use.

Auto Connect

Device Name

Default name: BOSS AUDIO BVCP9850W_XXXX. Touch ?.

Radio

Seek Quality FM/AM

Adjust the sensitivity of both AM/FM bands. Touch ?.

Reset Touch: Resets seek sensitivity to default. Touch ?.

Region

Default Setting: America 2. US Tuner Spacing: FM (200 KHz), AM (10 KHz). European Spacing: FM (50 KHz), AM (9 KHz). Touch ?.

RBDS, Radio Broadcast Data System

Allows data from the radio station to be displayed on the product. Default Setting: ON. Touch ? to toggle ON/OFF.

RBDS

RBDS stations will broadcast information to display.

AF (Alternative Frequency)

When ON, the tuner automatically locates the same tuning program on other stations and selects the strongest signal. Default Setting: OFF. Touch ? to toggle ON/OFF.

TA (Traffic Announcement)

The radio automatically tunes into traffic information broadcasts while receiving FM broadcasts. Default Setting: OFF. Touch ? to toggle ON/OFF.

Auto Preset

Automatically searches and presets stations. Touch ?.

Troubleshooting
