How a Central Gas Furnace Works

A central gas heating system works by circulating warm air through ductwork. The basic process involves:

1. Burning fuel to generate heat in the burner.
2. Passing heat through a heat exchanger.
3. Blowing home air over the heat exchanger to warm it.
4. Distributing the heated air throughout the home via the supply ductwork.

Key components include:

• Temperature Control: Regulated by the furnace control board, activated by the thermostat.
• Draft Induced Fan: Draws air into the burner assembly and exhausts it outside.
• Gas Burners: Receive gas and burn fuel when heat is called for.
• Ignition Switch: Establishes the flame for heating.
• Heat Exchange: The component where heat is transferred to the air.
