- 2. Truss Rod Adjustment Nut: Located on the neck, used to adjust neck relief.
- 3. Pickup: Captures string vibrations and converts them into electrical signals.
- 4. Bridge: Anchors the strings at the body end.
- 4a. Saddle Height Adjustment Screws: Adjust the height of individual strings at the bridge.
- 4b. Intonation Adjustment Screws: Adjust the length of individual strings at the bridge for accurate tuning across the fretboard.
- 5. Volume Control: Adjusts the overall output volume.
- 6. Tone Control: Adjusts the tone (brightness/warmth) of the sound.
- 7. Output Jack: Connects the guitar to an amplifier or other audio equipment.
Restringing and String Stretching
The SDC-1 mini uses split shaft tuning pegs for quick string changes and stable tuning. Follow these steps for restringing and stretching new strings:
Restringing with New Strings
- Start with the low E string. Thread it through the metal hole at the back of the guitar body.
- Pull the string over the bridge, towards the headstock. Cut the string about 5 cm past the string post. Be cautious, as the cut end can be sharp.
- Thread the string through the hole at the center of the string post.
- Bend the string 90 degrees where it exits the post and wind it until it reaches the correct pitch. Ensure strings do not overlap when winding.
- Repeat for the remaining five strings.
Stretching the Strings
Short scale guitars may experience more pitch variation due to string lengthening or slippage. Stretching helps stabilize tuning:
- Tune all strings using an electronic tuner.
- Hold the guitar and gently pull each string (starting with the low E) about 1-2 cm away from the fingerboard at the 19th fret. Use your left hand to keep the string in the nut slot.
- Retune the string and repeat the stretching process a few frets higher. Continue this process, moving towards the 5th fret.
- Repeat as necessary for all strings.
Setup
Guitars are factory-adjusted for various playing styles with .012" to .054" strings. Adjustments can be made for personal preference, different string gauges, or weather changes.
Adjusting the Neck Relief
Check neck relief by pressing the low E string at the 1st and 19th frets. Measure the gap between the 8th fret and the string. An ideal gap is about the diameter of the high E string.
- Too much relief (gap too large): Tighten the truss rod nut clockwise with the provided tool.
- Too little relief (string touches 8th fret): Loosen the truss rod nut counter-clockwise.
Never force the truss rod. If uncomfortable, consult a qualified service center.
Adjusting String Height (Action)
Adjust action at the saddles. To raise action, turn saddle height adjustment screws clockwise. To lower action, turn them counter-clockwise. Adjust both screws on each saddle equally to keep it level.
Adjusting Intonation (Octave Tuning)
Compare the fretted note at the 12th fret to the 12th fret harmonic. If the fretted note is sharp, lengthen the string by turning the intonation adjustment screw clockwise. If it's flat, shorten the string by turning it counter-clockwise.
Adjusting Pickup Height
Turn pickup height adjustment screws clockwise to raise pickups (higher output) or counter-clockwise to lower them (lower output). Ensure adequate clearance for vibrating strings.
Care
Wipe the guitar with a clean, soft cloth after playing. Use guitar polish occasionally as per manufacturer instructions.
Protect the instrument from extreme temperatures and sudden changes. Avoid leaving the guitar in hot cars or moving it abruptly between very cold and hot environments, as this can damage the finish.
