Weatherproofing RJ45 Connection
Follow these steps to weatherproof the RJ45 connection:
- Use an outdoor-rated CAT5e/CAT6 cable with straight-through termination on both ends.
- Insert the cable through the Sealing Nut (D) and install the Compression Washer (C) onto the cable. The Compression Washer (C) has a slit for quick installation.
- Install parts (D) and (C) as shown in Figure 3.
- Insert the Flat Washer (A) onto the Connector Body (B), then insert the cable through Connector Body (B).
- Connect the RJ45 connector end into the device's Ethernet port.
- Ensure the locking latch of the RJ45 Connector is properly inserted into the Ethernet port.
- Fasten the Connector Body Assembly to the device's Ethernet port and tighten fully.
- Slide and insert the Compression Washer (C) into the Connector Body Assembly.
- Fasten the Sealing Nut (D) to the Connector Body Assembly and fully tighten to weatherproof the cable.
Additional Weatherproofing Steps: For extra protection against the environment:
- Wrap vinyl tape in a half-lapped fashion from the connector end down 3 inches onto the CAT5e/CAT6 cable.
- Wrap butyl mastic tape over the adhesive side of the vinyl tape, covering it and the connector.
- Wrap a final layer of vinyl tape over the butyl layer, covering the entire assembly.
- Secure the assembly with a small zip tie to prevent unwrapping.
For detailed explanations of RJ45 and RP-SMA connections weatherproofing, refer to the Stratum™ X5 Series Hardware Installation Guide at http://support.proxim.com.
Assemble the Mounting Hardware
Follow these steps to assemble the mounting hardware:
- Fix the Mounting Plate (A) to the bottom of the device using provided screws and washers. Ensure antennas will be vertically and horizontally polarized when mounted. Partially fasten screws with washers into all mounting holes before final tightening. Torque screws to 75 Lbf-in (86 Kgf-cm).
- Fix the Extension Arm (B) to the Mounting Plate (A) with the provided bolt, nut, and washers. The Extension Arm (B) allows for greater tilt adjustment for azimuth or elevation.
Mount the Device
Pole Mounting:
- Insert provided bolts through Bracket (D), mate with Bracket (C) around the pole, and secure with supplied washers. Torque to 100 Lbf-in (115 Kgf-cm). Supplied screws (Hex. Cap 5/16" x 4" long) fit pole diameters from 32 to 89 mm (1.25 to 3.5 inches).
- Fix the Extension Arm (B) to the Mounting Bracket (C) with the provided bolt, nut, and washers. Partially tighten joints J1 and J2 for alignment.
- Once alignment is satisfactory, tighten all assembled parts with a torque of 130 Lbf-in (150 Kgf-cm).
- Ensure the device's Ethernet Port-1, with cable installed (using cable gland), faces downward as shown in Figure 5.
Wall Mounting:
- Mount bracket (C) to a wall using 4 screws (not supplied), as shown in Figure 6.
Plug in the Cables
Note: Unscrew the sealing cap port cover before installing cables.
- Plug one end of the straight-through Cat5e/CAT6 cable into the device's Ethernet Port-1, following the weatherproofing steps. Connect the other end to the OUT/PoE port on the PoE Injector.
- Connecting a second Cat5e/CAT6 cable to Ethernet Port-2 is optional.
Note on Ethernet Port-2: 56V DC (30W max) is available on Ethernet Port-2. Ensure connected devices are rated for this voltage and power. When PoE IN receives 56V DC, PoE OUT delivers the same voltage. By default, Ethernet Port-2 is data-only; PoE OUT and Data can be enabled via Web configuration. Disconnect the cable from the PC before enabling this feature.
- To connect via a hub or switch to a PC: Connect an Ethernet cable from the PC's network interface card to the hub, and from the hub to the RJ45 IN/LAN port on the PoE Injector.
- To connect directly to a PC: Connect an Ethernet cable from the PC's network interface card to the RJ45 IN/LAN port on the PoE Injector.
- The PoE Power Injector is a Gigabit Ethernet port and can supply up to 60 Watts.
Note: An optional 2.5/5 Gbps 802.3bt PoE injector (Part Number: 949-00147) is available separately.
Install Surge Protector
The Stratum™ X5 Series has built-in Ethernet surge protection. However, installing an approved lightning surge protector at the building ingress point is mandatory. For regions with severe weather, an additional surge protector near the device is recommended.
Note: An additional Surge Protector (Part Number: 235-00001) can be ordered separately.
Surge Protection Steps:
- Mount a surge protector near the building ingress. Use a 10 AWG or larger wire to connect its ground lug to earth ground.
- Ensure the outdoor device and the co-located surge protector share a common grounding point using the shortest possible grounding cable.
- Connect an RJ45 terminated cable between indoor equipment and the surge protector's port at the building ingress.
- Connect an RJ45 terminated cable between the surge protector and the outdoor device on Ethernet Port-1. IMPORTANT: Loop the cable before entering the premise to prevent water ingress.
Grounding Guidelines:
- A proper earth ground impedance should be less than 1.0 ohm.
- Measure ground impedance at the surge protector's ground wire connection point, not at the grounding rod.
- Connect the surge protector ground wire and equipment ground (power and telecomm) to a single common ground.
- Ensure all connections are securely fastened and tight.
- Never install during a storm and always follow local safety codes.
Ground the Device
To ensure proper grounding, attach a ground wire (at least 12 AWG stranded) to one of the device's bottom corner ground points using the provided grounding screw. Follow these guidelines to protect against lightning or ESD events:
- Connect one end of the grounding cable to the device and the other end to the closest earth ground point at the installation site.
- Remove any excess ground wire length after connecting to the single point earth ground.
- Avoid sharp bends, loops, or coiling the ground wire; connect it straight to ground.
Power on the Device
After connecting the PoE Injector and device with a CAT5e/CAT6 cable, plug the power cord into a power outlet. The device has no ON/OFF switch. To power down, unplug the RJ45 connector from the OUT/POE port on the PoE injector.
View LEDs
When powered on, the device performs startup diagnostics. Upon completion, Ethernet LEDs indicate the device's Ethernet state.
Power & Link LEDs (Figure 7)
LED | State | Description |
---|---|---|
1G | Off | Ethernet Port-2 not connected |
1G | On | Ethernet link is established |
2.5G | Off | Ethernet Port-1 not connected |
2.5G | On | Ethernet link is established |
PWR | Off | Power is Off |
PWR | On | Power is ON |
RSSI LED Behavior (Figure 8)
During the first two minutes after power-on or reboot, LED indicators provide status:
LED State | RSSI_LED-1 (Lower) | RSSI_LED-2 | RSSI_LED-3 | RSSI_LED-4 | RSSI_LED-5 (Higher) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Off | Power is OFF | Wireless 1 (5 GHz) is OFF | N/A | Flash is corrupted (requires RMA) | Ethernet is DOWN |
