INSTEON Links

INSTEON devices offer enhanced functionality when connected together, forming a control system. Devices can control and be controlled by others. The process of associating devices is called Linking.

Understanding Linking

Links are One-Way: Links created between INSTEON devices are unidirectional (e.g., Device A controls Device B, but B does not control A).

Links Remember a Device's State: A link stores the last state (On, Off, or dimmed level) of the controlled device. For example, a switch can turn a lamp dimmer to 75% brightness.

Controllers: INSTEON devices that initiate commands to control other devices are called controllers. Common controllers include sensors, switches, keypads, and the INSTEON Hub.

Responders: INSTEON devices that receive commands from controllers are called responders. Common responders include switches, keypads, plug-in modules, and LED bulbs.

Device Roles

Controller-Only: Some devices, like sensors, can only control other devices.

Responder-Only: Some devices can only receive INSTEON commands and cannot control others.

Grouping Devices & Cross Linking

Grouping Devices: Allows multiple devices to be grouped, for example, to create a virtual three-way switch configuration. This is known as Cross Linking.

Use Cross Linking: To Cross Link, turn on the devices and perform the linking process twice, once in each direction (e.g., Link Switch A to Switch B, then Link Switch B to Switch A).

Adding to the INSTEON Hub

  1. Tap the "Add a Device" button within the INSTEON app on your iOS, Android, or Windows Phone device.
  2. When prompted, press and hold one of the set buttons on your Wall Outlet until the device emits a beep.

Troubleshooting

The LED lights on the Wall Outlet are not illuminated

Possible Cause: Outlet is not receiving power or status LEDs have been disabled.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Verify power is flowing to the outlet. Ensure the circuit breaker is on and wire connections in the junction box are secure with no bare wire visible.
  • If the outlet functions and controls devices, use software or the Local Programming Flowchart to adjust the status LED behavior. LED brightness can be dimmed to appear off via INSTEON Hub or central controller software.

Unable to add the Wall Outlet to a scene as a controller or a responder

Possible Cause: Powerline noise from large appliances, power strips, or electronic devices may interfere with the INSTEON signal.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Check if the outlet is downstream of a GFCI outlet, which can filter INSTEON signals. Investigate alternative wiring if this is the case.
  • If large appliances (refrigerators, air conditioners) coincide with issues, install a noise filter at the offending device. Disconnect suspect devices to test.
  • Small electronics with AC/DC power supplies can generate noise. Disconnect devices like speaker docks or small stereos to test. Install noise filters if they resolve the issue.
  • Ensure the outlet is within signal range of other INSTEON devices. Consider a Range Extender if necessary.

The Wall Outlet is slow to respond to commands from a controller

Possible Cause: The controller may be repeating commands for devices removed from the network, slowing down the network.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • If INSTEON devices were removed from the network, their links must be removed from the controller. Use software to examine the controller's database or manually remove links.
  • If missing devices cannot be identified, perform a factory reset on the controller. This removes all links but requires reconfiguration of scenes and properties.

The connected light turned on by itself

Possible Cause: An unintended link exists between another INSTEON device and the Wall Outlet.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Use software to examine the Wall Outlet's links and remove any stray controller links.
  • If the controller cannot be identified, perform a factory reset on the Wall Outlet, which will require reconfiguring its scenes and properties.

Using a controller, the Wall Outlet will turn off but not turn on

Possible Cause: The outlet was linked with the load set to 'Off'.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Ensure the outlet's connected load is 'On' and re-link the device to your INSTEON controller. This new link will overwrite the previous 'off' link.

The Wall Outlet does not respond to button taps or controller links

Possible Cause: A power surge or excessive powerline noise may have caused the outlet to stop responding.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Temporarily disconnect power to the outlet at the service panel for about 10 seconds, then restore power and test.
  • If the issue persists, a factory reset may be required. Follow the Local Programming procedures to reset the device and reconfigure its scenes and properties.

After installing the Wall Outlet, the switch produces a long, continuous beep

Possible Cause: Incorrect wiring.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Turn off power and verify all wire connections in the junction box are secure, with no bare wire. Ensure correct wire identification (Line, Neutral) using a voltage detector or multimeter if necessary. Consult an electrician if unsure.
