PlayStation 5 Quick Start Guide
This guide provides essential information for setting up and using your PlayStation 5 console.
Getting Started: Console Setup
Follow these steps to set up your PS5 console.
Attaching the Base
Always attach the base to the console, whether positioning it vertically or horizontally. Place the console on a flat surface for attachment.
For Horizontal Position:
Ensure the hook ? on the base is in the illustrated position before attaching it to the console. Align the base with the marked area on the console and press firmly. You may need to reconfigure the base by rotating the top and bottom parts in opposite directions until you hear a click.
For Vertical Position:
Place the console with its rear side facing up. Remove the screw hole cap. Place the screw hole cap on the bottom of the base. Remove the screw ? from the bottom of the base. Attach the base and secure it with the screw using a coin or a similarly shaped object.
Connecting Cables
Connect the necessary cables before plugging the power cord into an electrical outlet.
- HDMI Cable: Connect one end to the console's HDMI OUT port ? and the other end to your TV's HDMI IN port ?.
- Power Cable: Connect the AC IN connector ? to the console and the other end to a power outlet ?.
- LAN Cable (Optional): For a wired internet connection, connect a LAN cable ? (not included) to the console's LAN port ?. If using Wi-Fi® ?, skip this step.
Powering On
Turn on your TV and set the input to HDMI. Then, press the ? (power) button on the console. The power indicator will blink blue and then turn white.
Connecting Your Controller
Connect your wireless controller to the console using a USB cable, then press the ? (PS) button.
To pair your controller, connect it to the console's USB port ? with a USB cable. Pressing the ? (PS) button will turn on the controller.
You can use up to 4 controllers simultaneously. Press the ? (PS) button to assign numbers to your controllers; the player indicator lights ? will show the assigned number.
Personalizing Your Console
Follow the on-screen instructions to personalize your PS5 experience.
- Console Setup: Select your language, configure internet connection settings, and manage power saving options. The console defaults to a low power consumption mode for energy saving.
- Account Setup: Create a new account or sign in with an existing PlayStation Network account, such as one created on a PS4 console.
- Transferring Content: If you have a PS4 console, you can transfer game save data, user information, and downloaded content to your PS5 console using the same network or a USB drive.
Setup is complete when the "Welcome to PlayStation 5!" message appears.
Parental Controls
Manage settings for children using the PS5 console. Parental controls allow you to set restrictions on games, playtime, communication, and more.
Each adult ? and child ? requires a separate account. A child's account is automatically linked to an adult's account, forming a family. Parental controls can only be set for children within your family.
Game Rating Icons: Icons indicate age appropriateness for games. Common ratings include 3, 7, 12, 16, 18, and 21, depending on the region (e.g., Europe, Africa, India; Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; United Arab Emirates).
Using the Console
Control Center
Press the ? (PS) button to open the Control Center, providing access to various features without leaving your game or app.
- Cards: Display features and activities related to your games and apps.
- Controls: Select ? (Home) to return to the home screen or ? (Power) to turn off the console.
Home Screen
From the home screen, access games or media content. The games portal includes your games and the PlayStation Store. The media portal includes music, videos, and other media apps.
You can switch between game and media home screens and adjust settings or edit your profile.
Power Management
Rest Mode
Your PS5 console's power saving mode is called "rest mode". It allows you to charge controllers, update system software, and suspend games or apps.
To enter rest mode: From the Control Center, select ? (Power), then select "Enter Rest Mode". The power indicator will blink white, then turn orange.
To exit rest mode, press the ? (PS) button.
Shutting Down Completely
To turn off the console completely: From the Control Center, select ? (Power), then select "Turn Off PS5". The power indicator will blink white, then the console will turn off.
Caution: Disconnect the AC power cord only when the power indicator is off to avoid data loss or corruption.
Power Indicator Status:
- White: Console is on.
- Orange: Console is in rest mode.
- Off: Console is off.
Controller Usage
Charging Your Controller
While the console is on or in rest mode, use a USB cable to connect your controller to the console. The light bar ? will blink orange slowly in rest mode and turn off when fully charged.
To ensure charging in rest mode, go to Settings ⚙️ > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports, and select an option other than "Off".
Muting Your Microphone
Press the mute button ? to switch your microphone between muted (button lit) and unmuted (button off). Press and hold the mute button to mute your mic and turn off sound output from the controller's speakers and TV. Press again to return to the original state.
Microphone Status:
- Lit: Mic is muted.
- Off: Mic is unmuted.
- Blinking: Mic and sound output are muted.
