ResMed Battery Guide
This guide provides essential information for running ResMed devices on battery power, covering battery types, maintenance, and compatibility with various ResMed products.
Introduction
Many users opt to power their ResMed devices, such as flow generators or ventilators, using battery power when mains electricity is unavailable. This guide is designed to assist users in understanding the requirements for operating a flow generator and/or humidifier from battery power, whether for camping, power backup, or other situations.
For users intending to run a ResMed device from a battery for a single night before recharging, the following pages offer guidance on specific battery and inverter/converter requirements.
Visual Description: The image depicts a typical battery power setup for a ResMed device. It includes a large, rectangular deep-cycle battery with red and black terminal clamps, a black cable adapter, a grey electronic converter box with cables, and a ResMed S9 device with a humidifier attached.
The Equipment: Batteries
Battery Basics
ResMed devices typically utilize rechargeable lead-acid batteries. These batteries operate on a principle where two dissimilar metals are immersed in an electrolyte, facilitating the flow of electrical current. A standard flooded lead-acid battery contains six banks of plates or cells, each producing 2.11 volts, resulting in a terminal voltage of 12.66 volts.
Lead-acid battery construction: The diagram illustrates the internal components of a lead-acid battery, showing the casing, lead (negative plate), lead oxide (positive plate), terminals, and electrolyte (acid surrounding the plates).
Types of Batteries
Batteries are manufactured for different purposes. The primary types discussed are:
Automotive Batteries
Designed for high current surges to start car engines, these batteries have numerous thin plates to maximize surface area. They are made of a lead "sponge" material that can be damaged by deep discharge. Automotive batteries should not be discharged beyond 30% before recharging and typically last about 30 deep cycles. They are rated in Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), indicating their ability to supply current at -20°C.
Deep-cycle Batteries
These batteries feature solid lead plates that are thicker, allowing for deeper discharges (up to 80% or more). They are rated in amp-hours (AH), indicating the current they can supply over a specific time. Note that CCA and AH are not directly correlated.
Marine Batteries
Similar to deep-cycle batteries, marine batteries have thick plates to support deeper discharges and are rated in amp-hours. Most are hybrid types and can be safely discharged up to 60% before recharging.
Caution: Always consult the battery manufacturer for specific discharge rate recommendations.
Other Types of Batteries
AGM, or Absorbed Glass Mat
AGM batteries are sealed and use Absorbed Glass Mats between the plates. They offer advantages over gelled and flooded batteries, including resistance to shock and vibration, spill-proof design, and lower shipping costs due to being non-hazardous. They also have a very low self-discharge rate, allowing for longer storage periods.
Gelled Electrolyte
Gelled batteries contain acid "gelled" with silica gel, preventing spills even if the battery is broken. However, they require lower charging voltages and can lose capacity if overcharged. In hot climates, water loss can also affect their lifespan.
Battery Maintenance
Lead-acid batteries can degrade over time due to lead sulphate crystal formation during discharge. To prevent sulphation, it is recommended to:
- Add a battery conditioner as per manufacturer instructions.
- Regularly check electrolyte levels and top up with demineralised water if needed.
- Use a hydrometer to check the specific gravity of the electrolyte in each cell to detect potential cell damage.
Storing a Battery
- Check electrolyte levels in cells with filler caps and add demineralised water if necessary, avoiding overfilling.
- Clean the battery top and terminal posts.
- Fully charge the battery.
- Store in a dry, cool place (above freezing) where it can be easily recharged.
- Keep the battery charged at 100% state-of-charge by recharging every two weeks to prevent sulphation.
Caution: Incorrect charging can damage battery cells or reduce service life. Always follow the battery manufacturer's charging instructions.
Inverters
Inverters convert DC power from a battery to AC power for devices. Common types include pure sine wave and modified sine wave inverters. Pure sine wave inverters produce a waveform similar to domestic power outlets and are generally more expensive.
Visual Description: The document shows waveform comparisons: a smooth, continuous sine wave for a "Pure sine wave" inverter and a blockier, stepped waveform for a "Modified sine wave" inverter.
Power Ratings
Inverters have power ratings indicating their continuous and surge (peak) power delivery capabilities. The continuous rating is for sustained use, while the surge rating is for short bursts of power.
Warning: It is recommended that inverters are certified by accredited testing organizations (e.g., VDE, TSU, BSI) in addition to CE or UL markings. Contact your local ResMed office for more information.
Minimum Inverter Requirements
The following tables detail the minimum inverter requirements for various ResMed products:
ResMed devices powered with inverter
Inverter type | Products | |
---|---|---|
Modified sine wave - 150 watt | • AutoSet CS2/VPAP Adapt SV • S7 series • S9 series • VPAP series • VPAP Auto |
• C-Series Tango • S8 series • S8 II series • S9 series + H5i • VPAP III series • VPAP Malibu |
Pure sine wave - 300 watt continuous Peak/Surge rating - 500 watt |
All products (except S9) with humidifier - HumidAire 2i, HumidAire 3i, H4i, H5i, C-Series heated humidifier | • AutoSet CS2/VPAP Adapt SV • C-Series Tango • S7 series • S8 series • S8 II series • Stellar series • VPAP III series • VPAP Malibu • VPAP Auto |
Note: VPAP series inverters should be used with the Battery Adapter Cable (p/n 22006).
Note: The original HumidAire must not be used with inverters.
Caution: The C-Series Tango with C-Series heated humidifier operates at 110V only.
Warning: Other ResMed heated humidifiers must not be used with inverters. Doing so may cause damage to the unit or serious injury. Check with the manufacturer if using a different brand of heated humidifier.
Converters
ResMed offers specific converters for the following products:
Product | Converter |
---|---|
VPAP series | DC-24 converter (p/n 26932) with Battery Adapter Cable (p/n 22006) |
S9 series | DC/DC converter 24V/90W (p/n 36970) |
Stellar series | Stellar DC/DC converter (p/n 24922) |
Air10 series | Air10 DC/DC converter (p/n 37297) |
Why use a converter?
- Converters are more efficient than inverters.
- They provide electrical protection to the device if adapter leads are connected incorrectly to the battery.
- Converters regulate battery voltage, typically providing a stable 13.5 volts, and reduce voltage as the battery discharges.
- Converters automatically shut down when the battery voltage drops below 10.5V (12V battery) or 21V (24V battery) to prevent over-discharge.
- Converters offer electrical isolation to the device.
Visual Description: The image shows a ResMed branded converter with a power cord and a car cigarette lighter plug.
Connecting a converter/inverter to a battery
Most converters and inverters connect to a battery via a car cigarette lighter plug. This can be used with an auxiliary battery in a car or 4WD vehicle. For direct connection to battery terminals (e.g., when the battery is outside the vehicle), an adapter cable is required.
Visual Description: The image shows a red and black adapter cable with alligator clips on one end and a car cigarette lighter plug on the other.
This adapter cable provides a more energy-efficient connection by bypassing the vehicle's electrical system.
Warning: Do not attempt to start the vehicle engine while using a ResMed device powered by the vehicle battery, as dangerous voltage spikes can occur and damage the unit.
Battery size tables
The following tables provide battery size requirements for ResMed devices powered with an inverter or converter. These tables are based on an 8-hour usage period and include a 50% safety margin. Note that for automatic devices, the 95th percentile pressure is used.
