MICROZONE II Direct Digital Controllers

The MICROZONE II (MZII) controllers, part of the NETWORK 8000 Facility Management System family, are fully programmable units designed to enhance building automation and control strategies.

Overview

The MZII offers custom block programming capabilities, allowing for stand-alone operation and providing system operators with flexibility in creating unique control strategies. It is applicable to a wide range of mechanical equipment. Control programs can be downloaded via the Personal System Interface (PSI) and Xtended Personal System Interface (XPSITM). The MZII utilizes state-of-the-art surface mount technology for reduced size and cost, combined with powerful features and modularity for expandability. Application control programs are stored in non-volatile EEPROM memory, allowing for easy modification and creation of new sequences.

  • "Fast" half (0.5) second input to output response times make MZII directly applicable to static pressure, fume hood, and laboratory pressurization applications.

Communications

  • Ports: RS-485 asynchronous at 19,200 baud (adjustable) to global controller. Modular jack provided for local connection of the Personal System Interface.
  • Local Terminal (PSI): PSI can monitor all device parameters and has access to all program blocks and attributes for complete program editing and creation. Provides up/download capability for system maintenance.
  • Network Device Access: PSI connected at one device has access to all network-wide devices on an ASD communication bus. Connection of PSI will not disrupt network communications between the MZII controller and other devices on the bus.
  • NETWORK 8000: Supports up to 127 MZIIs per Global Control Module. Shared network data includes all physical input/output points plus capability of WINDO and EMS blocks, which are program definable.

MZII Control Schematic Description

The schematic illustrates a typical Fan Tracking VAV (Variable Air Volume) Air Handling System controlled by the MZII. The system manages airflow and temperature to maintain desired conditions.

  • Airflow Path: Outside Air and Return Air are mixed, controlled by an Economizer Damper Actuator. This mixed air passes through a Filter. A Mixed Air Temperature sensor monitors this stream.
  • Supply Air Control: The filtered mixed air is supplied by a Supply Fan, controlled by a Fan On/Off switch. A Coil is present for temperature regulation. The Discharge Air Temperature is monitored.
  • Airflow Measurement: A Differential Pressure (DP) sensor across an Air Flow Station measures airflow.
  • Pressure Control: A static pressure sensor is located in the supply duct, approximately two-thirds of the way down, to monitor duct pressure.
  • MZII Inputs: The MZII receives inputs from an Enthalpy Input Device, Mixed Air Temp sensor, Fan On/Off status, DP Across Air Flow Station, Discharge Air Temp sensor, and the static pressure sensor.
  • MZII Outputs: The MZII controls the Economizer Damper Actuator, a Vortex Damper Actuator, the Supply Fan (On/Off), and the Coil.
  • Additional Features: A Smoke Detect sensor is integrated, and an Occupancy Output is available, potentially for lighting enable.
  • Wiring: All field wiring is specified to use twisted, shielded pairs for optimal signal integrity.
