Proper Disposal of Your Old Refrigerator

IMPORTANT: Child entrapment and suffocation are serious risks. Junked or abandoned refrigerators are dangerous. Follow these instructions to prevent accidents:

Refrigerant Disposal: Dispose of the refrigerator according to Federal and Local regulations. Refrigerants must be evacuated by a licensed, EPA-certified technician.

Installation Instructions

Unpack the Refrigerator

WARNING: Excessive Weight Hazard Use two or more people to move and install. Failure to do so can result in back or other injury.

Remove packaging materials. Do not use sharp instruments, rubbing alcohol, flammable fluids, or abrasive cleaners on the surface. For more information, see "Refrigerator Safety."

When Moving Your Refrigerator: Cover the floor with cardboard or hardboard to avoid damage. Always pull the refrigerator straight out; do not wiggle or "walk" it.

Glass Shelves and Covers: Do not clean cold glass shelves with warm water, as they may break due to sudden temperature changes or impact. Tempered glass shatters into small pieces, which is normal. Use both hands when removing heavy glass shelves.

Door Removal, Leveling and Alignment

Gather required tools and parts. Measure doorways before moving. Turn off cooling, unplug the refrigerator, and remove food and bins before starting.

Tools Needed: Bubble level, Phillips screwdriver, 3/16" hex key, 1/4" hex-head socket wrench, 1/4" and 5/16" open-ended wrenches or adjustable wrench, internal star drive or 3/8" hex-head socket wrench.

Remove the Doors

WARNING: Electrical Shock Hazard Disconnect power before removing doors. Failure to do so can result in death or electrical shock.

  1. Unplug refrigerator or disconnect power.
  2. Open doors to 90°. Remove base grille. Note: Antenna housing is mounted behind the base grille; do not damage it.
  3. Disconnect water tubing behind the freezer door hinge.
  4. Disconnect wiring behind the freezer door hinge.
  5. Close both doors and keep them closed until ready to lift free.
  6. Use a 3/16" hex key to remove top left hinge screws. Do not remove screw A.
  7. Lift freezer door straight up off the bottom hinge. Feed water tubing and wiring through the hinge. Assistance may be needed. Rest door on a soft surface.
  8. Use a 3/16" hex key to remove top right hinge screws. Do not remove screw A.
  9. Lift refrigerator door straight up off bottom hinge. Rest door on a soft surface.
  10. Bottom hinges may not need removal. If necessary, use an internal star drive or 3/8" hex-head socket wrench. Leveler brackets are mounted behind hinges.

Replace the Doors and Hinges

  1. Replace bottom hinges, ensuring leveler brackets are assembled correctly. Tighten screws.
  2. Before replacing freezer door, feed small wiring bundle through hinge. Do not force the large wiring bundle through the hinge.
  3. Feed water tubes through the bottom left hinge, then replace freezer door.
  4. Align and replace top left hinge. Tighten screws.
  5. Reconnect water tubing and wiring. Do not intertwine bundles.
  6. Reconnect wiring plugs and housing. Reinstall wiring clip over grommets.
  7. Replace refrigerator door onto bottom right hinge.
  8. Align and replace top right hinge. Tighten screws.
  9. Replace ice storage bin and door bins.
  10. Plug refrigerator into a grounded outlet.

Leveling and Door Closing

Adjust the refrigerator's tilt for stability and easier door closing. Ensure feet are touching the floor. Use a 1/4" wrench to turn leveling feet (left to raise, right to lower). Tilt slightly more to the rear if doors don't close easily. Use a bubble level to check. When moving, turn feet right until they don't touch the ground.

Door Alignment

If doors are not properly aligned after leveling, adjust the alignment screw on the bottom hinge of the refrigerator door. Turn screw right to raise the door, left to lower it. Check alignment at the top. Replace base grille.

Handle Installation and Removal

Parts Included: Door handles (2), 3/16" hex key, spare setscrew(s).

To Install Handles:

  1. Remove handles from packaging.
  2. Open freezer door. On refrigerator door, place handle on shoulder screws with setscrews facing freezer.
  3. Push handle firmly until base is flush.
  4. Engage hex key into upper setscrew hole and rotate to tighten.
  5. Tighten setscrew until it contacts shoulder screw.
  6. Repeat for lower setscrew.
  7. Partially tighten both setscrews, then fully tighten them an additional quarter-turn.
  8. Repeat for freezer door.
  9. Save hex key and instructions.

To Remove Handles:

  1. Hold handle, insert hex key into lower setscrew hole and rotate to loosen.
  2. Loosen setscrew a quarter-turn at a time.
  3. Repeat for upper setscrew. Gently pull handle away.
  4. If necessary, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove shoulder screws.

Location Requirements

WARNING: Explosion Hazard Keep flammable materials and vapors away from refrigerator. Failure to do so can result in death, explosion, or fire.

IMPORTANT: For indoor household use only. Ensure proper ventilation: allow 1/2" (1.27 cm) space on each side and top, 1" (2.54 cm) space behind. Allow extra space at the back for ice maker water line. For installation next to a fixed wall, allow 2" (5.08 cm) minimum side space for doors to swing open.

Notes: Intended for ambient temperatures between 55°F (13°C) and 110°F (43°C). Preferred range for efficiency is 60°F (15°C) to 90°F (32°C). Do not install near heat sources. Minimum cabinet width is 36" (91.44 cm). For crisper pan removal with an extended wall, 54" (137.16 cm) total width is recommended.

Electrical and Water Requirements

Electrical Requirements

WARNING: Electrical Shock Hazard Use a grounded 3-prong outlet. Do not remove ground prong, use an adapter, or use an extension cord. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, fire, or electrical shock.

A 115-volt, 60 Hz, AC only, 15- or 20-amp fused, grounded electrical supply is required. A separate circuit is recommended. Use an outlet that cannot be turned off by a switch. Do not use an extension cord.

NOTE: Turn cooling off and disconnect power before installation, cleaning, or removing light bulbs.

Water Supply Requirements

Tools Needed: Flat-blade screwdriver, 7/16" and 1/2" open-end or adjustable wrenches, 1/4" nut driver, 1/4" drill bit, cordless drill.

IMPORTANT: All installations must meet local plumbing code requirements. Use copper tubing and check for leaks. Install only where temperatures remain above freezing.

Water Pressure: A cold water supply with pressure between 30 and 120 psi (207-827 kPa) is required for the dispenser and ice maker. To check pressure, dispense 1 cup (237 mL) of water with the filter removed; it should take 8 seconds or less.

Reverse Osmosis Water Supply: Water pressure from an RO system to the inlet valve must be 30-120 psi (207-827 kPa). If connecting to RO, pressure from the RO system to the refrigerator needs to be 40-60 psi (276-414 kPa). Check RO sediment filter and storage tank refill if pressure is low. If using a refrigerator water filter with RO, remove the refrigerator filter.

Connect Water Supply

IMPORTANT: Plumbing must comply with local codes. The refrigerator water tubing is PEX. Copper and PEX connections are acceptable. Recommended Whirlpool PEX tubing part numbers are W10505928RP, 8212547RP, or W10267701RP.

Style 1 (Recommended)

  1. Unplug refrigerator. Turn off main water supply. Flush line.
  2. Use a 1/2" copper household supply line with a quarter-turn shutoff valve.
  3. Diagram: Shows household water line (D), copper tubing (C), nut (B), and bulb (A).

    IMPORTANT: Use a cold water pipe. Drill on the top side to avoid sediment.
  4. Measure and cut 1/4" O.D. copper tubing. Ensure ends are square.
  5. Drill a 1/4" hole in the cold water pipe.
  6. Diagram: Shows cold water pipe (A), pipe clamp (B), copper tubing (C), compression nut (D), compression sleeve (E), shutoff valve (F), packing nut (G).

    Fasten shutoff valve to pipe using clamp. Tighten packing nut. Slip compression sleeve and nut onto tubing. Insert tubing into valve outlet and tighten nut.
  7. Flush tubing with water. Turn off shutoff valve.
  8. Bend tubing to reach refrigerator inlet, leaving a coil for service access.

Connect to Refrigerator (Style 1)

  1. Unplug refrigerator.
  2. Remove plastic part from water line inlet.
  3. Thread nut onto tubing end, tighten by hand, then with a wrench (two more turns). Do not overtighten. Ensure tubing does not touch cabinet walls.
  4. Install water supply tube clamp.
  5. Turn shutoff valve ON. Check for leaks.

Style 2

  1. Unplug refrigerator. Turn off main water supply. Flush line.
  2. Locate a 1/2" to 1 1/4" vertical cold water pipe.
  3. Remove plastic part from valve inlet. Attach copper tube using compression nut and sleeve. Tighten nut.
  4. Use tube clamp to secure tubing to refrigerator.
  5. Turn shutoff valve ON. Check for leaks.
  6. Diagram: Shows tube clamp (A), clamp screw (B), copper tubing (C), compression nut (D), valve inlet (E).

    If needed, install a second water strainer.

Style 3

  1. Unplug refrigerator.
  2. Remove black nylon plug from gray water tube.
  3. If tubing is short, use a 1/4" coupling. Thread nut onto coupling.
  4. Diagram: Shows refrigerator water tubing (A), nut (B), bulb (C), coupling (D), ferrule (E), nut (F), household water line (G).

    Turn shutoff valve ON. Check for leaks.

Install Air Filter (on some models)

The air filter reduces odors. Install prior to use if not factory-installed.

  1. Remove filter from packaging.
  2. Lift open the vented door.
  3. Snap filter into place.
  4. Close vented door.

Installing the Filter Status Indicator (on some models)

Activate and install the indicator with the air filter.

  1. Place indicator face-down on a flat surface.
  2. Press bubble on back until it pops.
  3. Lift open filter door. Slide indicator into notches (if present) or store visibly.

Replacing the Air Filter: Replace every 6 months or when the status indicator turns red. Remove old filter by squeezing side tabs. Install new filter and indicator.

Refrigerator Use

Using the Controls

Controls are on the dispenser panel. The display enters "sleep" mode after 2 minutes of inactivity. Touch any button to reactivate.

Adjusting the Controls: Factory settings are 37°F (3°C) for the refrigerator and 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer. Wait 24 hours before adding food. Adjustments do not cool faster. Check air vents if temperature is incorrect. Wait at least 24 hours between adjustments.

To adjust: Press and hold TEMP for 3 seconds. Use SMART GRID to raise temperature, FAST ICE to lower. Press TEMP to switch between FRIDGE and FREEZER. Press FILTER to save.

Cooling On/Off: Press and hold SMART GRID and FILTER simultaneously for 3 seconds to turn cooling off ("COOLING OFF" will display). Press again to turn cooling back on.

Additional Features

Fast Ice

Increases ice production for 24 hours. Requires ice maker to be on. Press FAST ICE to activate. Press again or adjust freezer temp to turn off.

Door Ajar Alarm

Sounds if a door is open for 5 minutes while cooling is on. Repeats every 2 minutes. Close doors to silence. Mute audible alarm by pressing any control panel button.

Convertible Drawer Temperature Control (on some models)

Adjust to chill meats or vegetables. Use MEAT settings (28°-32°F / -2°-0°C) for meat, VEG for vegetables. Move control right (less cold) if food freezes.

Crisper Humidity Control (on some models)

Adjust between LOW (open) and HIGH (closed) for fruit/vegetable storage.

Water and Ice Dispensers

Chilled Door Bin (on some models)

Cool air from the freezer directs to the refrigerator door bin. The chilled door bin control is on the left side of the refrigerator compartment. Slide control left for less cold, right for colder.

The Water Dispenser

IMPORTANT: Dispense at least 1 qt (1 L) of water weekly. If flow decreases, check water pressure (dispense 1 cup in 8 seconds or less). See "Water Supply Requirements" or "Problem Solver."

To Dispense Water: Press a sturdy glass against the dispenser pad. Hold close to the spout. Remove glass to stop.

Flush the Water System

Flush after connecting water or replacing the filter to remove air and prepare the filter. Dispense and release water in 5-second intervals until 3 gallons (12 L) have been dispensed.

The Ice Dispenser

Ice dispenses from the ice maker storage bin. Select cubed or crushed ice using the ICE TYPE button. Crushed ice may have a slight delay and noise. Expect a few ounces of crushed ice when switching to cubed.

To Dispense Ice: Ensure desired ice type is selected. Press a sturdy glass against the dispenser pad. Hold close to the ice guide. Remove glass to stop. Do not apply excessive pressure.

The Dispenser Light

Light turns on automatically. Can be set to ON, DIM, or OFF.

The Dispenser Lock

Press and hold TEMP and FAST ICE for 3 seconds to lock/unlock. Deactivates controls and dispenser pads.

Ice Maker and Storage Bin

Allow 24 hours for first ice, discard first three batches. Use quality water; avoid softened water. Do not use sharp objects to break up ice. Do not store items on or in the ice maker/bin.

Turning the Ice Maker On/Off: Switch is accessed after removing ice storage bin. Slide control to ON or OFF.

Removing and Replacing the Ice Storage Bin: Press release lever, tilt bucket outward, and lift. Replace by sliding bin back in until it clicks.

Water Filtration System

Do not use with microbiologically unsafe water. Systems certified for cyst reduction may be used on disinfected water.

Water Filter Status Light: "ORDER" indicates time to order a new filter. "REPLACE" indicates time to replace. If water flow decreases, replace filter sooner. Replace at least every 6 months.

Resetting the Filter Status: After changing the filter, press and hold FILTER for 3 seconds.

Changing the Water Filter

  1. Locate filter in the top-right corner.
  2. Lift open the filter cover door; the filter will eject.
  3. Pull filter straight out. Some water may spill.
  4. Remove covers from new filter O-rings.
  5. Align new filter with arrow pointing up and slide into place.
  6. Close filter cover door completely.
  7. Flush the water system.

Smart Refrigerator Features

Getting the Most from Your Smart Refrigerator

Smart Functionality: Smart Grid allows adjustments/delays for energy savings during peak times. Smart Delay and Delay Ice are implemented based on utility notifications. You can disable these features.

Smart Features: Remotely access features via computers, smartphones, tablets for monitoring and management.

Getting Connected

Requires Wi-Fi connectivity. Connect to your home wireless network. Create an account and register your refrigerator using the Smart Appliance ID number (SAID) found inside the compartment. Visit http://smart.whirlpool.com.

Using Smart Grid

Monitors energy price/demand from utility company to run high-energy tasks during off-peak times. The Smart Grid icon appears when active. Smart Delay adjusts cooling, defrost, and high-energy features. Delay Ice temporarily stops ice production for up to 4 hours.

To manually turn off Smart Delay/Delay Ice, press SMART GRID. Features will turn off for 4 hours. They will reactivate automatically after 4 hours, or can be manually reactivated.

Using Smart Features

Features include remote temperature adjustment, power outage notifications, door ajar notifications (if door open >10 min), water filter status notifications, and energy monitoring.

Refrigerator Care

Cleaning

WARNING: Explosion Hazard Use nonflammable cleaner. Failure to do so can result in death, explosion, or fire.

Clean both refrigerator and freezer sections monthly to avoid odors. Wipe spills immediately.

To Clean: Do not use abrasive cleaners, flammable fluids, or petroleum products. Use mild detergent and warm water with a soft cloth or sponge. Clean stainless steel exteriors similarly.

Condenser Cleaning: Not usually needed. If environment is greasy/dusty or has heavy pet traffic, clean condenser every 2-3 months. Remove base grille, clean grille and condenser area with a vacuum cleaner's soft brush attachment. Replace grille.

Lights

Interior and dispenser lights are LEDs. If not working, check "Water and Ice Dispensers" section or contact service.

Vacation and Moving Care

Vacations

If Leaving Refrigerator On: Use perishables, freeze other items. Turn off water supply to ice maker if connected. Turn off ice maker. Empty ice bin.

If Turning Refrigerator Off: Remove all food. Turn off water supply to ice maker at least one day ahead. Turn off ice maker. Turn Refrigerator Control to OFF. Clean, dry thoroughly. Prop doors open slightly to prevent odor/mold.

Moving

Prepare for move: Turn off water supply to ice maker. Disconnect water line. Turn off ice maker. Empty ice bin. Turn Refrigerator Control to OFF. Unplug. Clean, dry. Wrap removable parts. Raise front for rolling, or screw in leveling legs. Tape doors closed and power cord.

General Operation Issues

Refrigerator will not operate
  • Not connected to power: Plug into grounded outlet.
  • No power to outlet: Test outlet with a lamp.
  • Blown fuse/tripped breaker: Replace fuse or reset breaker. Contact electrician if problem persists.
  • Control/cooling off: Turn on controls.
  • New installation: Allow 24 hours for cooling.
Motor seems to run too much
  • New refrigerator motor is energy-efficient and runs at lower speeds. This is normal.
  • May run longer if room is warm, food load is large, doors are opened often, or a door is left open.
  • Compressor regulates temperature efficiently. Normal operating sounds may be unfamiliar.
Refrigerator seems noisy Normal noises include:
  • Buzzing/Clicking: Water valve opening/closing (normal if connected to water). Turn off ice maker if not connected.
  • Cracking/Crashing: Ice ejection from ice maker.
  • Popping: Inside walls contracting/expanding during cooldown.
  • Pulsating/Whirring: Fans/compressor adjusting.
  • Rattling: Water line flow, refrigerant flow, or items on top.
  • Water running/gurgling: Ice melting during defrost cycle.
  • Sizzling: Water dripping onto heater during defrost cycle.
Temperature is too warm
  • New installation: Allow 24 hours for cooling.
  • Doors opened often/not closed completely: Minimize openings, ensure seals are tight.
  • Air vents blocked: Remove obstructions.
  • Large amount of warm food added: Allow time for cooling.
  • Controls set incorrectly: Adjust to a colder setting. Check in 24 hours.
Temperature is too cold
  • Controls set incorrectly: Adjust to a warmer setting. Check in 24 hours.
  • Top shelf colder than lower shelves: Normal on some models due to freezer air vents.
  • Air vents blocked: Remove obstructions.
Interior moisture buildup
  • Some buildup is normal; clean with dry cloth.
  • Humid environment contributes to buildup. Use in dry indoor location.
  • Doors opened often/not closed completely: Minimize openings, ensure seals are tight.
Interior lights do not work
  • Doors open for extended period: Close doors to reset.
  • Light bulb loose/burned out (incandescent models): Tighten or replace bulb.
  • LED models: Call for service if lights do not illuminate.
Dispenser lights do not work (on some models)
  • Dispenser light set to OFF: Light only turns on when pad is pressed. Set to AUTO or NIGHT LIGHT for continuous operation.
  • Dispenser light sensor blocked: Ensure sensor is clear.
  • LED models: Call for service if lights do not operate correctly.

Doors and Leveling Issues

Refrigerator rocks and is not stable
  • Refrigerator is not level: Remove base grille, lower leveling feet until they touch floor. See leveling/alignment instructions.

Ice and Water Issues

  • Ice maker not on or ice bin not installed correctly: Turn on maker, ensure bin is in position.
  • Ice clogged/frozen in bin or chute: Remove/separate ice, clean chute/bin. Empty bin and clean every 2 weeks.
  • Wrong ice added: Use only ice from current maker.
  • Dispenser locked: Unlock dispenser.
  • Dispenser jams with crushed ice: Switch to cubed ice temporarily.
  • Dispenser pad pressed too long: Ice stops automatically. Wait a few minutes. Take large amounts directly from bin.
  • Water pressure low: Affects dispenser flow. See "Water Supply Requirements."
  • Water filter clogged/incorrectly installed: Replace or reinstall filter.
  • New plumbing connections: May cause off-flavor; should resolve over time.

Water is leaking from the back of the refrigerator
  • Water line connections not fully tightened: Ensure all connections are firm.
Water from dispenser is not cool enough (on some models)
  • Water is chilled to 50°F (10°C).
  • New installation: Allow 24 hours for water to cool.
  • Recently dispensed large amount of water: Allow 24 hours for cooling.
  • Water not recently dispensed: First glass may not be cool; discard it.
  • Refrigerator not connected to cold water pipe.
Low/no ice production (Smart Features)
  • Smart Delay and/or Delay Ice activated: Ice production may be delayed up to 4 hours during peak grid usage. Press SMART GRID to return to normal production.

IMPORTANT: Use replacement filter P4RFWB, part #W10295370A. Follow operational, maintenance, and filter replacement requirements.

Warranty

Limited Warranty: Whirlpool provides a one-year limited warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship for factory-specified parts and repair labor. Service must be provided by a Whirlpool-designated company. Proof of purchase is required.

Exclusions: Warranty does not cover normal household use, installation correction, consumables (bulbs, filters), damage from accident, misuse, abuse, fire, flood, improper installation, cosmetic damage reported after 30 days, food loss, pickup/delivery, unauthorized modifications, remote area service expenses, inaccessible installation, or altered/missing serial numbers.
