In 1981, my father John Chabot founded Chalair Électrik, the company that would become STELPRO. STELPRO prides itself on its commitment to designing, developing and manufacturing products in Canada. STELPRO's exponential growth over the past generation stems from our commitment to offering an unparalleled level of service, which has been key in positioning STELPRO as a leading brand on the market today. No task is too big or too small when it comes to satisfying the needs of our customers from all walks of life. For example, it's not uncommon to see a STELPRO representative advising an electrician on a construction site, assisting an engineer in designing their project or calling on an end-user at home to ensure 100% customer satisfaction.
Today, STELPRO employs over 400 people at both its Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville and Grand-Mère manufacturing facilities. STELPRO's motto is, and has always been, "Get it right the first time, every time!" This philosophy is an integral part of the STELPRO culture and one our employees embody every day. John Chabot, an entrepreneur with remarkable flair, founded Chalair Électrik Inc. in 1981. John enlisted the support of his youngest brother, Mike Chabot, and together the Chabots tackled the Quebec market with drive and passion, manufacturing top-performing heating products and backing them with a superior service-level that helped grow their family-owned business.
In 1994, Chalair Électrik acquired Stelpro Heating Inc., a competitor based out of Richmond Hill, Ontario, an acquisition that helped John Chabot get a foothold on the Canadian market. The acquisition made it possible for John to offer a complete line of products and delve into previously uncharted markets.
In 2000, the company experienced a landmark year. The second generation of Chabots, brothers Yves and Eric, become shareholders. It also saw the launch of an ambitious relocation project to Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, on the South-Shore of Montreal. One year later, the company inaugurated a new 118,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and celebrated its 20-year anniversary as a local Quebec success story.
Under the new Stelpro Design Inc. corporate identity, the company invested massively in sophisticated machinery and equipment and installed an in-house automated powder paint shop. The organization grew at lightning speed, rapidly gaining market share and becoming recognized as a leader in Canada's electrical heating industry. In 2004, the company diversified its portfolio with the addition of floor heating cables. The company's 25th anniversary in 2006 marked a turning point as John Chabot passed the company on to the next generation, with Yves and Eric sharing ownership and the presidency. That same year, Stelpro invested in the construction of a highly sophisticated research and development laboratory within their facility. As the lab consists of a house built inside a giant refrigerator, it's been dubbed the "Refrigerator House" and makes it possible to test products under real-life climatic conditions.
In 2010, Stelpro closed the original Richmond Hill, Ontario, facility and relocated all manufacturing activities to the Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville location, which boasted a new 216,000 square-foot mezzanine. Thanks to its many advanced technological systems and equipment, including automated cutting-edge stamping and bending, the expanded Saint-Bruno location subsequently became Stelpro's head office and manufacturing facility. In addition, the "Refrigerator House" received CSA C828-6 performance standard recognition and certification, and Stelpro became the sole owner of its sister company, Synapse Électronique, positioning itself in the electronic controls sector.
The company's 30th anniversary in 2011 saw Eric Chabot retire from the company, leaving Yves Chabot as sole Owner and President of Stelpro Design. Yves' remarkable vision quickly allowed him to take the necessary steps to rally his forces to navigate Stelpro through an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Shortly thereafter, Stelpro redefined its corporate identity to one that would speak more closely to the nature and position of its offer. The streamlined STELPRO 360 Comfort corporate identity and revamped brand image were launched shortly thereafter. The new STELPRO logo properly conveyed STELPRO's global, 360-degree solution.
In 2014, STELPRO joined the venerable ranks of Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies.
