Always disconnect power to the ERV and its controls before connecting, disconnecting, or changing electrical wiring. Lock and tag the disconnect switch or circuit breaker to prevent accidental reconnection of electric power.
⚠️ CAUTION: RISK OF CONTACT WITH HIGH SPEED MOVING PARTS
The appliance contains high-speed fans that can cause injury or damage if objects contact the spinning impellers. Fans may be controlled by external devices and switch on unexpectedly. Ensure electric power to the unit is disconnected when working near the fans.

1.0 OVERVIEW
The EV Premium ERVs are multi-speed, air-to-air energy recovery ventilators designed for residential applications with flexible installation options (floor joists or wall mounting). Models S, M, L, and X include an integral 34" line cord for 120VAC plug-in, while models SH, MH, LH, and XH require hard-wiring.
The ERV exhausts stale Return Air (RA) while transferring latent and sensible energy to the incoming fresh Outdoor Air (OA) via a static plate heat exchanger core. Airstreams do not mix. Each unit uses a 120V EC fan with airflow capacities ranging from 30-130 CFM (S/SH), 30-225 CFM (M/MH), 30-280 CFM (L/LH), and 100-390 CFM (X/XH).
Airflow can be set to Continuous or Boost modes, adjustable via potentiometers and controlled by optional sensors or devices. Balanced airflow is recommended for optimal energy recovery. The unit features a hinged door with an access/viewing port for potentiometer adjustment and is lined with 1" thick foil-backed foam insulation.

2.0 COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
2.1 CABINET
Constructed from 22-gauge galvanized steel, painted white. Features a hinged, removable door, four air pressure test ports, a low-voltage terminal strip, an access/viewing port, and locations for four duct connectors (6" or 8").
2.1.1 Removable Door with Interlock Switch
The insulated door has separable hinges and two securing latches. An access/viewing port allows potentiometer adjustment. A pressure-sensitive interlock switch behind the door cuts power if the door is opened during operation. Four air pressure test ports are located on the door for measurements.
2.2 FANS
Two high-efficiency, electronically commutated (EC) 120VDC variable speed fans are used: one for intake (OA/SA) and one for exhaust (RA/EA). Fan speeds are independently controlled by a 0-10VDC signal from the controller.
2.3 CONTROLLER
The controller signals the EC motors via integral potentiometers. Line voltage powers the fans, and a step-down transformer provides 24VAC to the low-voltage terminal strips. Four user-adjustable potentiometers set fan speeds for each mode.
2.3.1 Controller Power Supply
A 24VAC terminal strip is located on the unit end. The control board provides up to 12VA (approx. 0.5A) for optional control accessories.
2.4 DUCTS
Airstream Terminology:
- Outside Air (OA): External atmosphere air.
- Supply Air (SA): Air downstream of the core, supplied to the occupied space.
- Conditioned Air (CA): Air supplied to an occupied space.
- Return Air (RA): Air returned from a conditioned space to a heating/cooling appliance.
- Exhaust Air (EA): Air removed from a heating/cooling appliance and discharged.
Units include four field-installable duct connectors for 6" or 8" round ducts (S/SH, M/MH, L/LH) or 8" flexible/oval rigid duct (X/XH). Short, straight duct runs are preferred. Follow SMACNA guidelines for duct installation. Rigid ducting is preferred over flexible for lower airflow resistance.
Typically, four duct runs are used:
- OA Duct: Provides clean outdoor air, usually capped with an air inlet cap and bird screen. Wall intakes should be at least 10' from appliance vents or plumbing drainage vents, and 10' from exhaust fan discharge outlets (unless the outlet is 3' or more above the intake).
- EA Duct: Exhausts stale air outdoors, typically ending at an exterior wall exhaust cap.
- SA Duct: Delivers fresh, conditioned air to the residence, ending in a floor or wall grate (min. 28 sq. in. area) or connected to the main HVAC system's return or supply air duct. If connected to the return air duct, it must be at least 3' from the return plenum.
- RA Duct: Collects indoor air from return grilles, passes it through the core, and directs it for exhaust.
Insulation: Ducts connected to the outside within a building require insulation with a sealed vapor barrier (R-value of at least R-6, R-8 recommended). For unconditioned spaces (attics, crawl spaces), all four ducts must be insulated.

Notes: ERV blowers can operate independently of the furnace blower. Caution is advised when introducing fresh air at low velocity to avoid drafts.
2.5 ENTHALPIC CORE
Features a static-plate, cross-flow core that separates incoming and outgoing airstreams while transferring total energy (heat and water vapor). Airstreams do not mix.
2.6 FILTERS
Equipped with mesh-type, anti-microbial MERV 8 filters on OA and RA sides. The OA filter can be replaced with an optional MERV 13 pleated paper filter. Filters are not to be cleaned; they must be replaced every three months or more frequently if needed.

2.7 CONTROLS TERMINAL STRIP
Located on the unit end, providing a 24VAC connection for Boost mode or accessories. Includes terminals for High Speed, Common, Damper, and 24VAC. Also shows a 120VAC line cord connection for S, M, L, X models.

3.0 UNIT PLACEMENT
RenewAire recommends installation by a professional HVAC installer for proper air stream balancing. The unit can be installed by one person.
3.1 MOUNTING THE UNIT
The unit can be installed in any orientation, but horizontal is preferred for easier door access for filter changes and core cleaning. Mounting can be done on concrete foundation walls or stud walls using appropriate anchors and brackets. Foam tape is used for vibration dampening. Safety screws are recommended. For suspending from floor joists or trusses, use the hanging bracket and integral flange.

Notes: The door has slide-off hinges for convenience. Avoid overtightening screws to prevent vibration transfer. Wall brackets require support from two wall studs; use a plywood panel if necessary.
3.2 SERVICE CLEARANCES
Ensure sufficient space for the door to open at least 90° for access to latches and components.
3.3 AC POWER SOURCE
- EV Premium S, M, L, X: Require 120VAC, 3.0 amps (S, M, L) or 5.5 amps (X). Have an integral 34" power cord. A grounded 120VAC outlet is required nearby.
- EV Premium SH, MH, LH, XH: Require 120VAC, 3.0 amps (SH, MH, LH) or 5.5 amps (XH). Must be hard-wired by the installer, following local codes. A disconnect switch may be required.
3.4 LOAD BEARING CAPACITY OF SUPPORTS
The ERV must be attached to structural members like joists, beams, or wall studs. Support from fixtures like ductwork or air handlers is not permitted unless approved by a design engineer.
4.0 INSTALLATION

Use proper hoisting hardware and PPE during installation.
4.1 USER-SUPPLIED INSTALLATION MATERIALS
Recommended materials include a duct hoist, medium-strength thread-lock, UL-181-rated duct mastic, pliers, drill, screwdriver bits, and a stud finder.
4.2 FACTORY-RECOMMENDED ELECTRIC SERVICE ENTRY
- EV Premium S, M, L, X: Plug the 34" factory-installed line cord into a 120V receptacle.
- EV Premium SH, MH, LH, XH: Hard-wire through the unit's 2" x 2" junction box, which has knockouts for 1/2" metal conduit. The junction box can be remounted for knockout positioning.
4.3 FACTORY-RECOMMENDED LOW-VOLTAGE SERVICE ENTRY
All low-voltage connections are made on the exterior terminal strip; no field wiring enters the unit.
4.4 ATTACHING DUCTS
Fabricate and install ducts per SMACNA guidelines. Use zip ties, UL-181-rated duct mastic, and screws for secure attachment. Observe industry best practices.
4.5 SELECTING AIRFLOW SETTINGS
Consult the RenewAire website (renewaire.com/how-to-buy/home-ventilation-solutions/) for basic airflow volume recommendations based on square footage and bedrooms. Boost mode can be tied to usage patterns (e.g., bathrooms). An HVAC professional should be consulted for optimal settings. Airflow is adjusted using potentiometers on the unit door, referencing pressure readings and charts in Section 5.2.1.
4.6 BALANCING AIRFLOWS
EV Premium ERVs allow for balanced or slightly unbalanced airflows. A slight excess of OA may reduce air infiltration. Some homes may require imbalance due to furnace/water heater venting. An HVAC professional can advise on balance settings. Balancing involves setting OA fan speed and adjusting RA fan speed to match or slightly lower the OA exhaust.
Equipment Required: Magnehelic gauge or manometer (0-1.0 inches water gauge), two pieces of 1/8" I.D. latex tubing.
Differential static pressures (DP) are measured across the core and filters using the installed pressure ports.
Note: Airflow volumes can be adjusted as needed. Re-balancing is recommended after any changes.

4.7 WIRING SCHEMATICS
Provides diagrams for both line cord (115VAC, 1 Phase) and hard-wired installations, detailing connections to the control board, SF and EF motors, door kill switch, and external controls.

4.8 LOW-VOLTAGE WIRING DIAGRAMS
- 4.8.1 Single Speed Mode CONTINUOUS: Unit runs constantly at low speed. Adjust OA/RA low-speed potentiometers for desired airflow.
- 4.8.2 Low Speed CONTINUOUS/High Speed SWITCHED: Unit runs at low speed continuously and switches to Boost (high speed) via an external control device connected to the 24VAC and High Speed terminals.
- 4.8.3 Single Speed Mode SWITCHED (Intermittent): Unit operates only when activated by an external control device connected to the 24V and High Speed terminals. Low-speed potentiometers should be turned fully counterclockwise.

4.9 DAMPER OPERATION
Optional MD-Series 24-volt dampers can be wired to prevent outdoor air from being pulled through the ERV via the HVAC fan when connected to a ducted return. Refer to the MD series damper manual for details.
4.9.1 Damper installation for Continuous ERV Operation: Wire damper to 24VAC and COM terminals. Damper opens with power, closes when power is lost.

5.2.1 Conversion of Pressure Drop to Airflow
Use the following formulas and tables to convert pressure drop readings (in inches w.g.) to airflow in CFM, depending on filter type (MERV 8 or MERV 13).

6.0 MAINTENANCE
ℹ️ IMPORTANT: Unit is for use after building construction completion, not during.
The primary maintenance is filter replacement. Filters are mesh-type, anti-microbial MERV 8 and must be replaced, not cleaned. Optional MERV 13 pleated paper filters can be used for the OA filter post-construction. Replace all filters every three months or more frequently based on air quality.
The enthalpic core should be vacuumed annually using a soft-bristled nozzle. Ducts should be inspected annually for damage, contaminants, or leaks.
6.1 MAINTENANCE AFTER 30 DAYS OPERATION
Check and tighten all mounting and support hardware. Inspect filters for cleanliness, as construction dust may have accumulated.
6.2 RECALIBRATION OF AIRFLOWS
Recalibrate fan speed potentiometers if the heating system is reconfigured, structural changes occur, or MERV 13 filters are installed.
6.3 DOOR REMOVAL
To remove the door, disconnect power, unlatch the door, and slide it off its hinges.
6.4 SERVICE PARTS
Key service parts include the Core, Draw Latch, Hanging Bracket, Filter, Door, Filter Clip, Interlock Switch, Electrical Box Assembly, Impeller, and Duct Collar.

7.0 TROUBLESHOOTING
⚠️ CAUTION: Many troubleshooting steps involve high voltage. Use appropriate PPE (gloves, safety glasses, head gear) and take precautions against electric shock.
7.1 INDICATION OF PROBLEM
Verify that fresh air is not being delivered. Check air filters for cleanliness and proper position. Perform a hard restart (unplug for several seconds, then plug back in). Check ducting and airflow at nearest vents. Test both low and high speed settings.
7.2 EV PREMIUM HAS AIRFLOW BUT IS MAKING NOISE
Check for fan vibration. Imbalance or bad bearings can cause noise. Rotate impellers by hand to ensure they spin freely. Clean impellers if dusty. If noise persists, a fan bearing may be faulty.
7.3 NO APPARENT AIRFLOW FROM THE EV PREMIUM
Verify power. Trace power supply if none. If unit has power but fans don't run, check disconnect switch. Listen for fan noise and feel for vibration. Check filters for cleanliness. Inspect ducts for obstructions, kinks, or disconnections. Check outdoor vent louvers. If only one fan runs, check fan connectors.
7.4 INADEQUATE OR REDUCED AIRFLOW FROM THE EV PREMIUM
Use a manometer to check pressure differential across the core (Section 4.6). Compare readings to initial installation settings. Check low and high speed settings via terminal strip jumpers (Section 4.7). Inspect ducts for bends, blockages, or leaks.
7.5 EV PREMIUM FAILS TO RUN IN EITHER LOW SPEED OR HIGH SPEED MODE
Modes operate independently. Isolate the issue by bypassing the controlling device. Remove wiring from the terminal strip, check operation without jumpers, then test with a jumper from 24VAC to High Speed terminal.
7.6 NO APPARENT REASON FOR LOW AIRFLOW
Reset fan potentiometers using instructions in Section 4.6, restoring settings to original CFM values recorded in Section 5.1.
