Testing a modem pair with SATEL Test-Kit
Equipment needed:
- Computer with two COM ports
- SATELLINE SaTerm 5 software
- 2 pcs YC0210 NARS-1F-4A-SC (interface adapter)
- 2 pcs YC0201 CRS-9 serial cable (extension cable for NARS-1F)
- 2 pcs YP0115 A-AC (power supply, 100-240 Vac / 15 Vdc / 4.6 A)
- 2 pcs YC0904 C-M (mains cable, European plug)
- 2 pcs YA0800 ATT-1 (coaxial attenuator, 65 dB, 2 W max. RF input, TNC connectors)
- 1 pc YC1150 CRF-50 (coaxial cable, 50 cm, TNC connectors)
Device Setup
A diagram illustrates the device setup. It shows two SATEL radio modems under test (NARS-1F-4A-SC) connected via interface adapters (ATT-1) and a coaxial cable (CRF-50) with attenuators. Each modem is connected to a power supply (A-AC) and a mains cable (C-M). A computer with SATEL software (SATERM) is connected to the modems via serial cables (CRS-9).
Setup Procedure
- Connect the RS cables to COM ports.
- Connect the power cables to the A-AC power supply.
- Connect the attenuators ATT-1 to the modems’ antenna connectors and connect the attenuators together using the CRF-50 antenna cable.
- Open the SaTerm 5 software by clicking the SaTerm icon.
SATELLINE SaTerm Settings for Transmitting Modem (COM 1)
Instructions are provided to configure the SATELLINE SaTerm software for the transmitting modem.
Serial Port Setup:
- Set the correct COM port number (typically the first free COM port, e.g., COM1).
- Configure port parameters (baud rate, parity, data bits, stop bits) to be the same for both SaTerm and the radio modem. Recommended settings: View = ASCII, Handshake = None.
Transmit Window Configuration:
- Click 'Mode' and then 'Transmit' to open the transmit window.
- In the transmit window, select 'Data from: Text'.
- Enter text into the 'Text box', for example, "Modem test line".
- Configure settings: data form=text, counter=on, continuous=on, put CR/LF to end=on, delay=1 sec.
- Click 'Send' to transmit the data.
SATELLINE SaTerm Settings for Receiving Modem (COM 2)
Instructions are provided to configure the SATELLINE SaTerm software for the receiving modem.
Serial Port Setup:
- Set the correct COM port number (typically the first free COM port, e.g., COM2).
- Configure port parameters (baud rate, parity, data bits, stop bit) to be the same as for the transmitting modem. Recommended settings: View = ASCII.
Testing Data Modem 1 to Modem 2:
- Click 'SEND' in the transmit window (COM 1).
- Verify at the receiving window (COM 2) that all characters are correct.
- Stop testing by clicking 'CANCEL'.
Testing Data Modem 2 to Modem 1:
- Switch the modems to opposite roles and test in the same manner.
