Panel Descriptions

The BOSS DD-200 is a digital delay pedal with various modes and extensive control options.

Top Panel

The top panel features the primary controls for the DD-200:

  • 1 Display: Shows the delay time, memory status, and other operational information.
  • 2 [TIME] Knob: Sets the delay time or switches between saved memories. The display updates to reflect the current setting.
    • Example Indications:
    • Delay Time (Time): 1 ms = "1", 100 ms = "100", 1 s = "1.00"
    • Delay Time (Tempo): Tempo: 120 = "120.", Tempo: 1000 = "1K.", Tempo: 99000 = "99K.", Tempo: 100000 = "10.K."
    • Memory: MANUAL = "MAN", memory 1–9 = "M-1"–"M-9", memory 10–99 = "M10"–"M99", memory 100–127 = "M.00"–"M.27"
  • 3 [FEEDBACK] Knob: Adjusts the amount of feedback, controlling the number of repetitions. Note: Oscillation may occur depending on the input sound and knob position.
  • 4 [E.LEVEL] Knob: Adjusts the volume of the effect sound. In REVERSE mode, maximizing E.LEVEL cuts the direct sound.
  • 5 Mode Knob: Selects the delay mode. Available modes include STANDARD (clear digital delay), ANALOG (mild analog delay), TAPE (tape echo emulation), DRUM (Binson EchoRec2 emulation), SHIMMER (pitch-shifted delay), TERA ECHO (spacious echo), PAD ECHO (drifting delay), PATTERN (16 delays), LO-FI (distorted sound), DUAL (series delays), DUCKING (volume/feedback adjust to input), and REVERSE (backward delay).
  • 6 [PARAM] Knob: Adjusts an appropriate parameter specific to each selected delay mode. For example, it can adjust the attack, character, playback heads, brilliance, or delay patterns depending on the mode.
  • 7 [TONE] Knob: Adjusts the overall tonal character of the effect. Turning right boosts high frequencies; turning left cuts them. The center position provides a flat response.
  • 8 [MOD DEPTH] Knob: Adjusts the depth of modulation applied to the effect sound.
  • 9 [TAP DIVISION] Button: Sets the delay time based on note lengths relative to the BPM. A long-press of this button can enable/disable panel lock to prevent accidental operation.
  • 10 TAP DIVISION Indicator: Displays the delay time as a note value, with the pedal tap interval defining the base quarter note (100%). It indicates dotted half (300%), half (200%), dotted quarter (150%), half-note triplet (133%), quarter (100%), dotted eighth (75%), quarter-note triplet (67%), eighth (50%), and eighth-note triplet (33%).
  • 11 [MEMORY] Button: Switches or saves memories (MANUAL, 1–127). Memories can be cycled by pressing the button or switched by holding it and turning the [TIME] knob.
  • 12 MEMORY Indicator: Shows the currently selected memory. It is unlit if memory 5–127 is selected.
  • 13 [ON/OFF] Switch: Toggles the delay effect on or off.
  • 14 [MEMORY/TAP] Switch: Switches between memories or activates tap tempo mode. Pressing it at the tempo of a song allows for matching delay times.

Rear Panel (Connecting Your Equipment)

Proper connection order is important to prevent malfunctions:

  • To prevent malfunction and equipment failure, always turn down the volume and turn off all units before making any connections.
  • A INPUT (A/MONO, B) Jacks: Connect your guitar, bass, or effect unit here. Use both A and B jacks for stereo output from an effect unit; use only the A jack for mono input. The INPUT A jack also serves as the power switch, turning the unit on when a plug is inserted.
  • B OUTPUT (A/MONO, B) Jacks: Connect to your amplifier or monitor speakers. Use OUTPUT A for mono output. Stereo input sound is output in mono.
  • C CTL 1, 2/EXP Jack: This jack can be used for external footswitches (FS-5U, FS-6, FS-7) to tap-input delay time or switch memories. It can also be used with an expression pedal (EV-30, Roland EV-5, etc.) to control delay time or effect volume. Use only specified pedals to avoid malfunction or damage.

Side Panel (Connecting Your Equipment)

  • D DC IN Jack: Connects to an AC adaptor (PSA-seriesS). Use only the specified adaptor and ensure correct voltage. The unit draws power from the adaptor when connected.
  • E MIDI Jacks: Connect external MIDI devices using a TRS/MIDI cable (BMIDI-5-35) to switch memories. Do not connect audio devices here, as it may cause malfunctions.
  • F USB Port: Connect to a computer using a USB 2.0 compatible cable for program updates. Do not use charge-only micro USB cables.

Saving and Switching Memories

Saving to Memory:

  1. Long-press the [MEMORY] button. The display shows "Wrt."
  2. Turn the [TIME] knob to select the save-destination (MAN, 1–127). Alternatively, press the [MEMORY] button to select. Press [TAP DIVISION] to cancel.
  3. Long-press the [MEMORY] button to confirm. The memory is saved. If saving to MAN, panel settings become the default values for other controls.

Switching Memories:

  1. Press the [MEMORY] button to cycle through memories (MAN → 1 → 2 → ... → 127 → MAN). Memories can also be switched by holding the [MEMORY] button and turning the [TIME] knob. The MEMORY indicator is unlit for memories 5–127.

What is "MAN" (manual)?: In "MAN" mode, the delay uses the actual knob positions. Delay time and TAP DIVISION settings are recalled from memory.

Performing with Phrase Loops

The DD-200 features a looper for recording and playing back sound in real-time to create layered performances.

  • Entering/Exiting Looper Mode: Press the [ON/OFF] and [MEMORY/TAP] switches simultaneously. The display shows "LoP." Maximum recording time is approximately 60 seconds (mono).
  • Record: Record your guitar or bass performance. (Uses [ON/OFF] and [REC] functions).
  • Overdub: While the recorded phrase plays, overdub an additional performance. Press the switch to change to playback. (Uses [ON/OFF] and [DUB] functions).
  • Loop Playback: The phrase plays as a loop. Press the switch to change to overdubbing. (Uses [ON/OFF] and [PLY] functions).
  • Stop: During overdubbing or playback, press the switch to stop. (Uses [MEMORY/TAP] and [STOP] functions).
  • Clearing the Phrase: While stopped, hold the [MEMORY/TAP] switch for two seconds or longer to erase the recorded phrase. Recorded content is cleared when exiting looper mode and is not saved. The ON/OFF indicator lights up if data exists.

Overall Settings (Menu)

Basic Operation:

  1. Press [TAP DIVISION] and [MEMORY] buttons simultaneously to enter menu mode.
  2. Turn [TIME] knob to select a parameter, then press [TIME] knob. The value is displayed.
  3. Turn [TIME] knob to edit the value.
  4. Press [TIME] knob to confirm.
  5. Press [TAP DIVISION] and [MEMORY] buttons simultaneously to exit menu mode.

Assigning Functions to External Pedals:

Connect footswitches (FS-5U, FS-6, FS-7) to the CTL 1, 2/EXP jack to tap-input delay time or switch memories. Use menu items "C1F" or "C2F" for these settings.

Diagrams show typical footswitch connections and polarity switch settings.
