3.1 Battery
1 Battery: The battery powers a STIHL battery product with energy.
2 Handle: The handle is for carrying the battery.
3 Socket: The socket is for inserting the plug.
4 Cap: The cap covers the USB port.
5 USB Port: The USB port is for connecting a USB cable or a USB adapter.
6 Pushbutton: The pushbutton activates the LEDs and the signal tone on the battery. The pushbutton activates and deactivates the Bluetooth® radio interface.

3.2 Harness System
The harness system is not included in the scope of delivery for the battery.

4 Lever: The lever secures the battery to the harness system.
5 Rail: The rail allows adjustment to the user's body size.
6 Buckle: The buckle holds the connecting cable on the harness system.
3.3 Connecting Cable and Adapter AP
The connecting cable and Adapter AP are not included in the scope of delivery for the battery.
1 Connecting Cable: The connecting cable connects the battery to a STIHL battery product with a socket or to the Adapter AP.
2 Plug: The plug connects the connecting cable to the battery.
3.4 Symbols
The symbols on the battery indicate the following:
- 1 LED lights red: The battery is too warm or too cold.
- 4 LEDs blink red: There is a fault in the battery.
- The battery has a Bluetooth® radio interface and can be connected to the STIHL connected App.
- The information next to the symbol indicates the battery's energy content according to the cell manufacturer's specification. The energy content available in the application is lower.
- Do not dispose of the product with household waste.
4 Safety Instructions
4.1 Warning Symbols

- Read, understand, and keep the user manual.
- Protect the battery from heat and fire.
- Do not immerse the battery in liquids.
- Observe the permitted temperature range for the battery.
4.2 Intended Use
A STIHL AR L battery powers the following STIHL battery products:
- Battery product with socket.
- Battery product with battery slot for STIHL AP batteries.
- Battery product with battery holder for STIHL AR L batteries.
The battery can be used in the rain.
The battery must only be used for work on the ground or on a work platform.
The battery must not be used for battery lawnmowers with a battery slot for STIHL AP batteries.
During operation, the battery is carried on the back via the harness system or connected to a battery product as described in the battery product's user manual.
The battery is charged with a STIHL AL 301, AL 301-4, or AL 500 charger.
In combination with the STIHL connected App, the battery enables personalization and the transfer of information about the battery based on Bluetooth® technology.
WARNING
- Products and chargers not approved by STIHL for the battery can cause accidents, fires, and explosions. People can be severely injured or killed, and property damage can occur.
- Only use the battery with the following STIHL battery products:
- Battery product with socket.
- Battery product with battery slot for STIHL AP batteries.
- Battery product with battery holder for STIHL AR L batteries.
- Charge the battery with a STIHL AL 301, AL 301-4, or AL 500 charger.
- If the battery is not used as intended, people can be severely injured or killed, and property damage can occur.
- Use the battery as described in this user manual, the STIHL connected App, and at www.connect.stihl.com.
4 Safety Instructions
4.3 Requirements for the User
WARNING
Users without instruction may not recognize or assess the hazards of the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP. The user or other persons can be severely injured or killed.
- Read, understand, and keep the user manual.
- If the battery, harness system, connecting cable, or Adapter AP are passed on to another person: Provide the user manual.
- If there are any uncertainties: Consult a STIHL dealer.
- Ensure that the user meets the following requirements:
- The user is rested.
- The user is physically, sensorially, and mentally capable of operating and working with the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP. If the user is physically, sensorially, or mentally impaired, the user may only work under supervision or after instruction by a responsible person.
- The user can recognize and assess the hazards of the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP.
- The user is of legal age or is undergoing vocational training under supervision according to national regulations.
- The user has received instruction from a STIHL dealer or a qualified person before using the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP for the first time.
- The user is not impaired by alcohol, medication, or drugs.
4.4 Work Area and Environment
WARNING
- Bystanders, children, and animals may not recognize or assess the hazards of the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP. Bystanders, children, and animals can be severely injured.
- Keep bystanders, children, and animals away.
- Do not leave the battery unattended.
- Ensure that children cannot play with the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP.
The battery is not protected against all environmental influences. If the battery is exposed to certain environmental influences, it can catch fire, explode, or be irreparably damaged. People can be severely injured, and property damage can occur.
- Protect the battery from heat and fire. Do not throw the battery into fire.
- Use and store the battery in the temperature range between -10 °C and +50 °C.
- Do not immerse the battery in liquids.
- Keep the battery away from small metal parts.
- Do not expose the battery to high pressure.
- Do not expose the battery to microwaves.
- Protect the battery from chemicals and salts.
4.5 Safe Condition
The battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP are in a safe condition if the following conditions are met:
- The battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP are undamaged.
- The battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP are clean and dry.
- The battery functions and is unaltered.
- The harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP are unaltered.
- Original STIHL accessories for this battery and harness system are attached.
- The accessories are attached correctly.
4 Safety Instructions
WARNING
In an unsafe condition, the battery can no longer function safely. People can be severely injured.
- Work with an undamaged and functional battery.
- Do not charge a damaged or defective battery.
- Work with an undamaged harness system, an undamaged connecting cable, and an undamaged Adapter AP.
- If the battery, harness system, connecting cable, or Adapter AP are dirty or wet: Clean and dry the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP.
- Do not modify the battery, harness system, connecting cable, or Adapter AP.
- Do not insert objects into the openings of the battery or Adapter AP.
- Do not connect electrical contacts of the battery or Adapter AP with metal objects and short-circuit them.
- Do not open the battery.
- Use original STIHL accessories for this battery and harness system.
- Attach accessories as described in this user manual or the accessory's user manual.
- Replace worn or damaged warning labels.
Liquid can leak from a damaged battery. If the liquid comes into contact with skin or eyes, skin or eyes can become irritated.
- Avoid contact with the liquid.
- If contact with skin occurs: Wash affected skin areas with plenty of soap and water.
- If contact with eyes occurs: Rinse eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
A damaged or defective battery may smell unusual, smoke, or burn. People can be severely injured or killed, and property damage can occur.
- If the battery smells or smokes unusually: Remove the battery from your back, do not use the battery, and keep it away from flammable materials.
- If the battery is burning: Try to extinguish the battery with a fire extinguisher or water.
4.4 Work Area and Environment
Contact with live parts can occur due to the following causes:
- The connecting cable is damaged.
- The plug of the connecting cable or the connector to the battery is damaged.
- The Adapter AP is damaged.
WARNING
Contact with live parts can lead to an electric shock. The user can be severely injured or killed.
- Ensure that the connecting cable, the plug of the connecting cable, the connector to the battery, and the Adapter AP are undamaged.
An incorrectly routed connecting cable can be damaged. People can be injured, and the connecting cable can be damaged.
- Route the connecting cable so that the battery product's tool cannot touch the connecting cable.
- Route the connecting cable so that it is not kinked or damaged.
- If the connecting cable is twisted: Untwist the connecting cable.
4.6 Working
WARNING
In certain situations, the user may no longer be able to concentrate. The user may trip, fall, and be severely injured.
- Work calmly and deliberately.
- If lighting and visibility conditions are poor: Do not work with the battery.
- Watch for obstacles.
- Work standing on the ground and maintain balance. If working at height, use a work platform.
- If signs of fatigue occur: Take a work break.
If the battery changes during work, behaves unusually, or emits short, rapidly successive signal tones, the battery may be in an unsafe condition. People can be severely injured, and property damage can occur.
- Stop working, remove the battery from your back, and consult a STIHL dealer.
5 Preparing Battery for Operation
If the battery smells or smokes unusually: Remove the battery from your back, do not use the battery, and keep it away from flammable materials.
In a dangerous situation, the user may panic and be unable to remove the harness system. The user can be severely injured.
- Practice removing the harness system.
4.7 Transporting
WARNING
The battery is not protected against all environmental influences. If the battery is exposed to certain environmental influences, it can be damaged and property damage can occur.
- Do not transport a damaged battery.
During transport, the battery can tip over or move. People can be injured, and property damage can occur.
- Pack the battery in the packaging so that it cannot move.
- Secure the packaging so that it cannot move.
4.8 Storage
WARNING
- Children cannot recognize and assess the hazards of the battery. Children can be severely injured.
- Store the battery out of the reach of children.
The battery is not protected against all environmental influences. If the battery is exposed to certain environmental influences, it can be irreparably damaged.
- Store the battery clean and dry.
- Store the battery in a closed room.
- Store the battery separately from the product.
- If the battery is stored in the charger: Unplug the power cord and store the battery with a charge level between 30% and 45% (2 green LEDs).
- Store the battery in the temperature range between -10 °C and +50 °C.
The connecting cable is not intended for carrying or hanging the battery. The connecting cable and the battery can be damaged.
- Coil the connecting cable into a loop and attach it to the battery.
4.9 Cleaning, Maintenance, and Repair
WARNING
Harsh cleaning agents, cleaning with a water jet, or pointed objects can damage the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP. If the battery, harness system, connecting cable, or Adapter AP are not cleaned correctly, components may no longer function properly, and safety devices may be bypassed. People can be severely injured.
- Clean the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP as described in this user manual.
If the battery, harness system, connecting cable, or Adapter AP are not maintained or repaired correctly, components may no longer function properly, and safety devices may be bypassed. People can be severely injured or killed.
- Do not maintain or repair the battery, harness system, connecting cable, or Adapter AP yourself.
- If the battery, harness system, connecting cable, or Adapter AP need to be maintained or repaired: Consult a STIHL dealer.
5 Preparing Battery for Operation
5.1 Preparing Battery for Operation
Before starting work, perform the following steps:
- Check LEDs and signal tones (6.3).
- Fully charge the battery (6.1).
- Clean the battery (17.1).
- If the connecting cable is used:
- Clean the contact surfaces of the connecting cable (17.2).
- Attach the connecting cable or attach the battery and connecting cable to the harness system (8).
- Ensure the battery is in a safe condition (4.5).
If the harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP are used: Ensure the harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP are in a safe condition (4.5).
If the steps cannot be performed: Do not use the battery and consult a STIHL dealer.
5.2 Connecting Battery to the STIHL connected App
- Activate the Bluetooth® radio interface on the mobile device.
- Activate the Bluetooth® radio interface on the battery (7.1).
- Download the STIHL connected App from the App Store and create an account.
- Open and log in to the STIHL connected App.
- Add the battery in the STIHL connected App and follow the on-screen instructions.
Contact options and further information can be found at https://support.stihl.com or in the STIHL connected App.
The STIHL connected App is available depending on the market.
6 Charging the Battery, LEDs and Signals
6.1 Charging the Battery
The charging time depends on various factors, such as the battery's temperature or the ambient temperature. The actual charging time may differ from the stated charging time. The charging time is specified at www.stihl.com/charging-times.
When the power plug is inserted into a socket and the Adapter AP is inserted into the charger, the charging process starts automatically. When the battery is fully charged, the charger switches off automatically.
The battery and the charger warm up during charging.
The STIHL AL 301, 301-4, and AL 500 chargers have a built-in fan that may automatically switch on and off during charging.
- Attach the connecting cable or attach the battery and connecting cable to the harness system.

Plug the power plug (7) into an easily accessible socket (8).
The charger (5) performs a self-test. The LED (4) lights green for approx. 1 second and then red for approx. 1 second.
- Route the connecting cable (6).
- Insert the plug (1) of the connecting cable into the socket (2) of the Adapter AP (3).
- Insert the Adapter AP (3) into the guides of the charger (5) and push until it clicks.
The LED (4) lights green. The LEDs on the battery light green, and the battery is charging.
- If the LED (4) and the LEDs on the battery no longer light: The battery is fully charged, and the Adapter AP (3) can be removed from the charger (5).
- If the charger (5) is no longer used: Unplug the power plug (7) from the socket (8).
6.2 Displaying Charge Status

Press the pushbutton (1). The LEDs light green for approx. 5 seconds and indicate the charge status. A short signal tone sounds.
- If the right LED blinks green and six long signal tones sound: Charge the battery.
6.3 LEDs and Signals
The LEDs and signal tones can provide the following information about the battery:
- Charge status
- Activation and deactivation of the Bluetooth® radio interface
- Faults
7 Activating and Deactivating Bluetooth® Radio Interface
The LEDs can light or blink green or red. The right LED can additionally light or blink blue. The signal tones can be short or long.
If the LEDs light or blink green and a short signal tone sounds, the charge status is being displayed.
- If the right LED on the battery blinks green and six long signal tones sound: Charge the battery.
- If the LEDs light or blink red and no signal tone sounds: Troubleshoot, see 19.1. There is a fault in the battery product or the battery.
- If the four right LEDs on the battery blink red and emit short, rapid signal tones: Troubleshoot, see 19.1. There is a fault in the battery.
- If the right LED on the battery lights blue and three short signal tones sound: The Bluetooth® radio interface on the battery is being activated, see 7.1.
- If the right LED on the battery blinks blue and three short signal tones sound: The Bluetooth® radio interface on the battery is being deactivated, see 7.2.
7.1 Activating Bluetooth® Radio Interface
Press and hold the pushbutton until the right LED lights blue for approx. 3 seconds and three short signal tones sound. The Bluetooth® radio interface on the battery is activated.
7.2 Deactivating Bluetooth® Radio Interface
Press and hold the pushbutton until the right LED blinks blue six times and three short signal tones sound. The Bluetooth® radio interface on the battery is deactivated.
8 Assembling the Battery

- Place the battery (2) onto the harness system (3) so that the guides on the harness system (3) fit into the recesses on the battery (2).

- Remove the battery.

9 Adjusting Battery for User
9.1 Adjusting Harness System to User's Body Size
The harness system can be adjusted to sizes S, M, or L depending on the user's body size.

- Raise and hold the lever (4).
- Push the harness system (3) onto the battery (2) until the plug (1) engages with the socket (5).
- Push the lever (4) down until it audibly clicks into place.
- Align marking (3) with marking (4) so they are flush.
- Insert rail (2).
- Pull rail (2) against the arrow direction. The rail (2) clicks into place.
- Adjust rail (2) on the left and right shoulder straps to the same level.
9.2 Routing and Adjusting Connecting Cable
The connecting cable can be routed and adjusted depending on the user's body size, the different battery products, and the application.

The connecting cable can be secured via the guide (1) on the harness strap and the buckles (2), or laterally on the back plate with the buckles (2).
The length of the connecting cable can be adjusted using a loop on the battery (3) or a side loop (4).
- Route the connecting cable so that it is as short as possible, not kinked, and does not hinder work.

- Place the battery on your back.
- Close the hip belt buckle (2).
- Close the chest strap buckle (1).
- Tighten the straps until the hip belt sits on your hips and the back padding lies against your back.
- Thread the end of the hip belt through the buckles (3 and 4).

- Loosen the straps.
- Open the chest strap and hip belt buckles.
- Remove the battery from your back.
10.1 Checking LEDs and Signals
Press the pushbutton on the battery. The LEDs light green, and a short signal tone sounds. The charge status is displayed.
- If the right LED blinks green and six long signal tones sound: Charge the battery.
- If the LEDs do not light or blink, or if the signal tone does not sound: Do not use the battery and consult a STIHL dealer. There is a fault in the battery.
11 Working with the Battery

- If the Adapter AP is used: Remove the Adapter AP from the battery slot.

- Insert the plug (1) of the connecting cable into the socket (2) of the Adapter AP (3).
- Insert the Adapter AP (3) into the battery slot (4).

Connect as described in the battery product's user manual.
12.4 Disconnecting Battery
- Switch off the battery product.
- If a battery product with a socket is used: Disconnect the battery as described in the battery product's user manual.
- If the Adapter AP is used: Remove the Adapter AP from the battery slot.
- If a battery product for STIHL AR L batteries is used: Disconnect the battery as described in the battery product's user manual.
13 After Work

- Switch off the battery product.
- Disconnect the battery.
- If the battery, harness system, connecting cable, or Adapter AP are wet: Let the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP dry.
- Clean the battery, harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP.

The USB cable must be unplugged before working. The cap (1) protects the USB socket (3) from moisture and dirt.
- Pull out the cap (1).
- Insert the plug (2) of the USB cable into the USB socket (3).
- Press the pushbutton (4).
The USB device is charging. If the USB device is not charging, the charging current provided by the battery is too low (see 20.1). The USB device cannot be charged.
15 Transporting
15.1 Transporting Battery
- Switch off the battery product.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Ensure the battery is in a safe condition.

- If transporting the battery in a vehicle: Secure the battery so it cannot move.
- If packing the battery: Pack the battery so it cannot move in the packaging, and secure the packaging so it cannot move.
The battery is subject to the requirements for the transport of dangerous goods. The battery is classified as UN 3480 (Lithium-Ion Batteries) and has been tested according to the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, Subsection 38.3.

16 Storage
16.1 Storing Battery
STIHL recommends storing the battery with a charge level between 30% and 45% (2 green LEDs).
- Store the battery so that the following conditions are met:
- The battery is out of the reach of children.
- The battery is clean and dry.
- The battery is in a closed room.
- The battery is stored separately from the product.
- If the battery is stored in the charger: Unplug the power cord and store the battery with a charge level between 30% and 45% (2 green LEDs).
- The battery is within the temperature range between -10 °C and +50 °C.
CAUTION/NOTE
If the battery is not stored as described in this user manual, it may deep discharge and be irreparably damaged.
- Charge a discharged battery before storing it. STIHL recommends storing the battery with a charge level between 30% and 45% (2 green LEDs).
- Store the battery separately from the product.
16.2 Storing Harness System, Connecting Cable, and Adapter AP
- Store the harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP so that the following conditions are met:
- The harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP cannot tip over and move.
- The harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP are out of the reach of children.
- The harness system, connecting cable, and Adapter AP are clean and dry.
- The battery, harness system, or Adapter AP are not hung on the connecting cable.
