Wheel Change

Safety Precautions for Wheel Change

Before lifting the vehicle or changing a wheel, read and follow these instructions:

Tool Kit

Note: The types and location of tools may differ from those shown in the illustrations.

Note: Periodically inspect the jack, clean and lubricate the moving parts, especially the lifting screw, to prevent corrosion.

Note: Pay special attention to the correct placement of each tool, as it must be returned to its place after use.

Removing the Spare Wheel

Always remove the spare wheel before lifting the vehicle.

Note: Before removing the spare wheel, note its storage position. The replacement wheel must be correctly positioned and secured in its storage location.

  1. Open the luggage compartment door. See 9, OPENING AND CLOSING THE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT DOOR.
  2. Remove the luggage compartment floor panel.
  3. Remove the spare wheel retaining bolt.
  4. Remove the vehicle jack and the spare wheel lift. See 283, TOOL KIT.
  5. Secure the lift as shown in the illustration.
    • Pull the upper strap to lift the spare wheel.
    • Pull the lower strap to place the spare wheel on the luggage compartment door.
  6. Remove the tool and carefully lift the spare wheel from the vehicle.

Note: To store the replaced wheel, perform this procedure in reverse.

Using Wheel Chocks

Wheel chocks are stored in the tool kit.

  1. Remove the chocks from the tool kit.
  2. Slightly spread the two halves and turn until fully extended to increase the wedge.
  3. Position the vehicle on a level surface.

Both chocks must be used. Place them on both sides of the wheel and slide them firmly under the wheel.

Wheel Lug Nut Fastening

Wheel lug nuts can only be removed and installed using the special adapter from the tool kit.

Note: When a new vehicle is delivered, the adapter may be in the glove compartment. It should be placed in the tool kit immediately.

Note: The code number is stamped on the underside of the adapter. Record this number in the service booklet included with the vehicle documentation. This number will be required when ordering a replacement adapter.

To unscrew:

  1. Insert the adapter securely into the wheel's locking lug nut.
  2. Place the lug wrench onto the adapter and turn the wheel nut half a turn counterclockwise.
  3. After lifting the vehicle with the jack, unscrew the locking nut.

Note: After use, place the wheel lug nut adapter in its designated location in the tool kit.

Wheel Replacement

Before lifting the vehicle or changing a wheel, read and follow these instructions:

Note: The vehicle may be equipped with a tilt sensor that activates an alarm if the vehicle tilts in any direction after locking. To prevent the doors from locking during a wheel change, you can temporarily disable the tilt sensor. See 74, INSTRUMENT PANEL MENU.

Note: If side steps or running boards are fitted, the jacking points are located on the underside of the side step or running board brackets.

Before lifting the vehicle using the lug wrench, loosen the wheel nuts of the wheel to be replaced by half a turn counterclockwise.

  1. Position the jack under the correct jacking point.

Note: Do not allow the jack to contact the sill at any other point, as this could cause damage.

  1. Turn the jack handle clockwise to raise the jack until the jack pin enters the recess. Ensure the jack base is fully supported by the ground.
  2. Slowly and evenly raise the vehicle with the jack. Avoid quick, jerky movements that could cause the vehicle/jack to lose stability.
  3. Remove the wheel nuts and place them in a secure location where they cannot roll away.
  4. Remove the wheel and set it aside. Do not place the wheel face down, as this may damage the finish.
  5. Install the temporary spare wheel onto the hub.
  6. Reinstall the wheel nuts and tighten them slightly. Ensure the wheel is seated evenly on the hub.
  7. Once you have confirmed there are no obstructions under the vehicle, slowly and evenly lower the vehicle.
  8. After all wheels are on the ground, remove the jack and fully tighten the wheel lug nuts. Tighten the wheel lug nuts in the sequence shown in the illustration to a torque of 133 Nm (98 lb-ft).

Important Information - Using the Spare Wheel

Note: If it was not possible to measure the wheel nut tightening torque immediately upon replacement, they must be tightened to the specified torque as soon as possible.

If a spare wheel with an alloy rim is to be fitted, use a suitable blunt tool to knock off the center cap from the removed wheel. Install the center cap removed in this manner into the replacement wheel by pushing it in by hand.

Check and adjust the tire pressure as soon as possible.

When fitting the temporary spare wheel, the DSC system should be activated.

Do not fit anti-skid devices, such as snow chains, to the temporary spare wheel.
