Continental ARS 408-21 Premium Long Range Radar Sensor 77 GHz
A premium, robust, and compact radar sensor designed for advanced automotive and industrial applications.
Product Overview
The A.D.C. GmbH, part of Continental, offers the ARS 408-21, a premium 77 GHz long-range radar sensor. It is designed as an adaptable solution for various applications and serves as an enhanced version of the series 40X.
Typical Areas of Application
- Anti-collision protection for all types of vehicles, including partially autonomous systems.
- Headway control for far range detection in vehicles of all descriptions, particularly autonomous ones.
- Area monitoring for far range, suitable for hazardous or non-accessible zones.
- Classification of objects.
- Object detection in challenging or unclear environments.
- Detection of unremarkable objects, even when protected by a radome.
Measuring Procedure
The rugged ARS 408-21 sensor from Continental independently measures the distance and velocity of objects using the Doppler principle. It operates with Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology, employing very fast ramps for real-time scanning at 17 Hz. A key feature is its simultaneous measurement of great distances up to 250 meters, relative velocity, and the angular relationship between two objects.
Advantages
- Fast and Safe: The ARS 408-21 balances high measuring performance with operational safety. It can determine object distance in real-time, assessing potential collision risks based on driving speed.
- Reliable: The sensor is fail-safe, capable of automatically recognizing and reporting issues with the sensor or its environment.
- Robust and Small Design: Leveraging radar technology with a less complex measuring principle and benefiting from automotive supply industry development and mass production, the sensor features a very robust and compact design.
Sensor Field of View (FoV) Description
The sensor's coverage is depicted by two main sensing areas: the "Blue FoV Near Sensing Area (Short Range)" and the "Red FoV Far Sensing Area (Far Range)". The near sensing area covers distances up to approximately 70 meters with a wide angular range of ±40°, extending to 20 meters at ±60°. The far sensing area covers distances up to 250 meters with a narrower angular range of ±9°. The diagram indicates signal strength levels (+10 dBsm) at various ranges.
