How Solar Systems Work
Solar energy is captured by photovoltaic (PV) panels, producing direct current (DC). This DC power is converted by a PV or hybrid inverter into alternating current (AC) for household electrical appliances. Surplus AC power can be used by appliances or sold to the grid.
Diagram Description: A house with solar panels on the roof connected to an inverter. The inverter is connected to a main electrical panel, which distributes power to electrical appliances, a charging station, and an energy meter. The energy meter is connected to the grid network. The diagram illustrates the flow of energy from solar panels to the home and the grid.
Save Money Through Self-Consumption
Self-consumption lowers electricity bills and reduces carbon footprint by utilizing carbon-free energy. By producing and storing energy at home, you can reduce reliance on the public power grid. Self-consumption also increases property value.
Self-consumption (Total or Partial)
Advantages:
- Carbon-free, local energy, environmentally-friendly initiative.
- Additional income: Energy purchase price set by law (e.g., €0.1276/kWh as of 01/01/2025 for installations <3 kWp).
- Self-consumption incentive (e.g., €260/kWp as of 01/01/2025 for installations <3 kWp).
Disadvantages:
- Indexed to energy prices.
- Dependent on weather conditions (sunshine, etc.).
- Must be installed by a certified installer.
Total Energy Sale
Advantages:
- Carbon-free, local energy, environmentally-friendly initiative.
- Additional income: Energy purchase price set by law.
- Purchasing obligation by licensed operator.
Disadvantages:
- Not indexed to energy prices (Grid power metrics).
- Must be installed by a certified installer.
- Can overload the grid locally, risk of dips if grid is weak.
Note: Purchase and resale prices per kWh as of 01/01/2025: Operator purchase €0.27/kWh, Resale €0.1256/kWh. It is more profitable to consume energy produced than to sell it.
Benefits of Energy Storage
Promote Self-Consumption
On average, a home uses only 30% of the energy generated via PV panels for self-consumption. With battery storage, this rate increases to an average of 70%.
Get PV Energy When You Need It Most
The paradox of self-consumption without an energy storage battery is that electricity production via PV panels is highest when energy consumption is lowest. PV panels produce energy between sunrise and sunset when user consumption is minimal. As a result, only a small amount of the produced energy is consumed.
Diagram Description: A graph showing average consumption of a home with PV panels without storage. It illustrates energy consumption and production throughout the day (Morning, Midday, Evening), highlighting the mismatch between solar production and home energy needs. The text indicates that power generation via PV panels is not aligned with home energy needs.
The Solution
Adding an energy storage solution with a hybrid inverter and storage batteries maximizes self-consumption. Surplus PV production is stored in the batteries. An energy storage system improves autonomy from the power grid and reduces carbon footprint.
Define Your PV Installation With Ease
-
What PV panel and inverter power rating should you choose?
The installed capacity depends on the home's size, electrical equipment, and daily consumption habits to determine energy needs (in kWh).
-
What consumption mode do you prefer?
Options include total sale of energy produced, total or partial self-consumption, or operation in backup mode.
-
In which region will the PV panels be installed?
Electrical output of PV panels can vary based on location and sunlight.
The ideal power rating of the PV installation (in kilowatt-peak) can be determined based on this information and available roof surface. Generally, 3, 6, or 9 kWp is recommended for residential use.
Example
A house with a 100 m² roof, electric heating, partial self-consumption with surplus resale, Class D building, and 400 Wp PV panels, located in the Rhône department, would have its installed capacity determined by the PV installer. On average, a home with a 3 kWp PV installation has a monthly energy bill 20-30% lower than a home without photovoltaic panels.
Diagram Description: An illustration showing a house with solar panels and an energy storage unit. Text indicates an average annual consumption of 15,000 kWh. A 3 kWp (3,000 Wp) installation with 8 PV panels generates an average of 3,000 kWh/year, covering about 20% of consumption.
xStorage Lets You Make Your Projects a Reality
Consuming Clean, Carbon-Free Local Energy
A 100 m² house with an annual consumption between 9,000 and 15,000 kWh has a carbon footprint between 500 and 900 kg of CO2 per year. 1 kWh consumed off the power grid emits an average of 55g of CO2. A 3 kWp PV installation reduces these emissions by 20%.
Control Your Energy Bill
- Store energy from photovoltaic panels for later use.
- Homes with Hybrid xStorage reduce electricity consumption via the grid by 50% on average.
Avoid Power Supply Cutouts
With the built-in back-up trip output, critical loads remain operational during power outages. The storage capacity of the batteries determines the duration the building can be powered without a grid connection.
Increase the Value of Your Home
- Installing photovoltaic panels and an energy storage system increases home value.
- Photovoltaic panels can increase home value by up to 10%.
Schedule Your Consumption
- Schedule consumption of energy-intensive equipment (electric vehicles, heat pumps) using stored energy.
- Avoid exceeding contracted electricity amounts to prevent cut-offs.
Increase Your Energy Performance Rating
In the future, renting out homes with a DPE (Energy Efficiency Rating) of G, F, or E will be prohibited. Photovoltaic panels can improve this rating, especially during home renovation.
Diagram Description: An illustration of energy performance rating labels (A++ to E) for a house, indicating the potential improvement with photovoltaic panels.
Advantages of Eaton's Hybrid xStorage
Installation Speed and Scalability
The Plug-and-Play solution reduces installation and commissioning time by 50%. Energy monitoring is simplified via an application. The option of retrofitting batteries makes the solution scalable and accessible.
Modularity
The modular design allows for increased energy storage. Pre-determined combination codes prevent product selection errors. A single battery reference is used for both single-phase and three-phase systems, simplifying inventory.
Safety
The Hybrid xStorage system ensures technical safety and cybersecurity. The Plug-and-Play solution reduces on-site wiring and connection errors. The installer monitoring system allows for viewing installations and preventing misuse.
Advantages of Eaton Hybrid xStorage
Built-in Backup Trip Output
Hybrid xStorage features a built-in backup trip output with a transfer time of less than 20ms to power specific appliances during power outages. These devices are powered by photovoltaic production and available battery capacity. Loads not connected to the backup trip output will not be powered. Up to 80% of AC rated power can be supported, depending on the model.
