Precautions

Getting Started

Connecting to an AC power source

Connect the AC power cord to a wall outlet.

Diagram showing AC power cord connected to wall outlet.

The current EST (Eastern Standard Time) appears on the display. (The unit is preset at the factory and powered by the backup battery.)

Setting the clock for the first time

Select your time zone. If you live in the Eastern Standard Time zone, no adjustment is needed.

  1. Press TIME ZONE. Area number “2” appears on the display.
  2. Press TIME ZONE repeatedly to select your area number:
    • 0: Newfoundland Standard Time
    • 1: Atlantic Standard Time
    • 2: Eastern Standard Time (default)
    • 3: Central Standard Time
    • 4: Mountain Standard Time
    • 5: Pacific Standard Time
    • 6: Alaska Standard Time
    • 7: Hawaii Standard Time

The clock display switches to the current time of the selected time zone in about 4 seconds.

Note: A clock error may occur during shipment or first use. Refer to “Setting the clock manually” if necessary.

About Automatic DST/summer time adjustment

This unit automatically adjusts for daylight saving time (summer time). “DST” appears on the display at the beginning of DST and disappears at the end.

Notes: DST implementation may vary by country/region. If this interferes with desired adjustment, cancel Automatic DST and set the clock manually. Customers in regions without DST should cancel the Automatic DST setting before use. When Hawaii Standard Time is set, Automatic DST is off by default.

To cancel Automatic DST/summer time adjustment

Press and hold DST for more than 3 seconds while the clock is displayed. “Aut  OFF” appears, and the adjustment is canceled.

To reactivate Automatic DST/summer time adjustment

Press and hold DST for more than 3 seconds. “Aut  On” appears, and the adjustment is reactivated.

Operations

Setting the clock manually

  1. Press and hold ENTER/TIME SET for more than 2 seconds. The year digits flash.
  2. Press + or – repeatedly to select the year, then press ENTER/TIME SET.
  3. Repeat step 2 to set the month, day, and time.

After setting the time, two short beeps sound, and seconds start from zero.

Note: If no button is pressed for about 1 minute during clock setting, the mode cancels.

If Automatic DST is canceled, change the clock manually when DST begins or ends.

Playing the radio

  1. Press RADIO to turn on the radio.
  2. Set BAND to AM or FM.
  3. Tune to the desired station using TUNING.
  4. Adjust the volume using VOLUME +/–.

To turn off the radio, press ALARM RESET/OFF.

Setting the alarm

The alarm sound can be RADIO or BUZZ.

Before setting the alarm: Set the clock. Tune to a station and adjust volume if setting a radio alarm.

  1. Set ALARM MODE to RADIO or BUZZ. The alarm time appears briefly, then “ ” appears on the display (unless ALARM MODE is OFF).
  2. Press SET ALARM TIME + or – repeatedly to set the desired alarm time. “ ” flashes while setting.

When setting is complete, the clock display returns, and “ ” changes from flashing to fully lit. At the set time, the radio or buzzer sounds, and “ ” flashes.

To stop the alarm

Press ALARM RESET/OFF. The alarm will sound again at the same time the next day.

To doze for a few more minutes

Press SNOOZE/BRIGHTNESS. The sound stops and resumes after about 10 minutes. The display shows the snooze time for about 4 seconds before returning to the current time. “ ” flashes.

To deactivate the alarm

Set ALARM MODE to OFF. “ ” disappears from the display.

Notes: Alarm time cannot be changed if ALARM MODE is OFF. ENTER/TIME SET, DST, and TIME ZONE are unavailable when the alarm is sounding or snooze is active. If no operation is performed while the alarm is sounding, it stops after about 60 minutes. The alarm function works normally on the first and last day of DST. If the alarm is set for a skipped time during DST, it is skipped. If set for an overlapping time at the end of DST, it sounds twice.

Notes on the alarm in the event of a power interruption

If the set alarm time occurs during a power interruption, or if a power interruption occurs while the alarm is sounding:

If “ ” does not light up in this status, ALARM RESET/OFF, SNOOZE/BRIGHTNESS, and alarm mode functions are available. Snooze time is fixed to 10 minutes if SNOOZE/BRIGHTNESS is pressed.

Setting the sleep timer

You can fall asleep to the radio using the sleep timer, which turns off the radio automatically after a preset duration.

Press SLEEP. The radio turns on. Each press of SLEEP changes the duration (in minutes): 90 min → 60 min → 30 min → 15 min → OFF.

The radio plays for the set duration and then shuts off.

To deactivate the sleep timer, press SLEEP repeatedly until “OFF” is displayed.

To turn off the radio before the preset time, press ALARM RESET/OFF.

To use both the sleep timer and alarm

Set the alarm, then set the sleep timer. If the alarm is set to sound during the sleep timer duration, the sleep timer will be deactivated automatically when the alarm sounds.

Setting the brightness of the display

Three levels of brightness are available.

Press SNOOZE/BRIGHTNESS. Each press cycles through the brightness levels: Bright → Dim → Normal → Bright.

Note: Display brightness cannot be changed when the alarm is sounding or snooze is active.

General information

About the battery as a backup power source

This unit contains a CR2032 battery as a backup power source to keep the clock operating during a power interruption.

When to replace the battery

When the battery is discharged, “ ” appears on the display. If a power interruption occurs while the battery is discharged, the current time and alarm settings will be erased.

Notes for customers: The unit includes a preinstalled CR2032 battery for clock backup, preset to EST. If “AM 12:00” flashes on the display when first connected to AC power, the battery may be discharged; consult your Sony dealer. The preinstalled CR2032 battery is covered by the warranty.

Replacing the backup battery

  1. Keep the AC plug connected. Remove the battery compartment from the bottom of the unit by pulling it up while sliding the tab.
  2. Insert a new CR2032 battery with the correct polarity. To remove the old battery, push it out from the side marked PUSH.
  3. Reinsert the battery compartment until it clicks. The tab locks it.
  4. Press RADIO to remove “ ” from the display.

Notes: Do not disconnect the AC plug when replacing the battery, or time and alarm settings will be erased. If the unit will be unplugged for a long time, remove the battery to prevent leakage or corrosion.
