General Safety Information

ATTENTION: Read this document and related documentation before installing, configuring, operating, or maintaining this equipment. Ensure familiarity with installation and wiring instructions, and all applicable codes, laws, and standards. Installation, adjustments, commissioning, use, assembly, disassembly, and maintenance must be performed by suitably trained personnel. If equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, its protection may be impaired.

Environment and Enclosure

This equipment is intended for use in a Pollution Degree 2 industrial environment, in overvoltage Category II applications (as defined in EN/IEC 60664-1), at altitudes up to 2000 m (6562 ft) without derating. It is not intended for residential environments.

The equipment is supplied as open-type for indoor use. It must be mounted within a suitably designed enclosure that accounts for specific environmental conditions and prevents personal injury from live parts. The enclosure must have suitable flame-retardant properties (e.g., 5VA rating) or be approved for the application if nonmetallic. Access to the enclosure interior must require a tool. Refer to Industrial Automation Wiring and Grounding Guidelines (1770-4.1) and NEMA Standard 250 and EN/IEC 60529 for enclosure details.

Hazardous Location Approval

North American Hazardous Location Approval: Products marked "CL I, DIV 2, GP A, B, C, D" are suitable for Class I Division 2 Groups A, B, C, D locations. The rating nameplate indicates the hazardous location temperature code. When combining products, use the most adverse temperature code (lowest 'T' number). Combinations are subject to investigation by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction.

WARNING: Explosion Hazard. Do not disconnect equipment or connections unless power is removed or the area is known to be nonhazardous. Secure external connections. Substitution of components may impair suitability for Class I, Division 2.

UK and European Hazardous Location Approval (CE II 3 G): Intended for potentially explosive atmospheres (Zone 2). Complies with Essential Health and Safety Requirements of EU Directive 2014/34/EU, EN IEC 60079-0:2018, and EN IEC 60079-7:2015/A1:2018. Type of protection is Ex ec IIC T4 Gc. Reference certificate numbers DEMKO 04 ATEX 0330347X and UL22UKEX2478X. Suitable for areas where explosive atmospheres are unlikely or occur infrequently.

IECEx Hazardous Location Approval: Intended for areas with unlikely or infrequent explosive atmospheres (Zone 2). Complies with IEC 60079-0 and IEC 60079-7. Type of protection is Ex ec IIC T4 Gc. Reference IECEx certificate number IECEx UL 20.0072X.

Special Conditions for Safe Use:

ATTENTION: Prevent Electrostatic Discharge. This equipment is sensitive to ESD. Touch a grounded object, wear a grounding wriststrap, do not touch connectors or pins, avoid touching internal components, use a static-safe workstation, and store in static-safe packaging.

About the Module

The POINT I/O™ 4 Channel IO-Link Master Module provides four channels configurable as IO-Link masters or standard digital I/O modules. It supports four channels for IO-Link master communication or four channels of digital input/output (IEC61131-2 type 1 input). Channels can be disabled if not in use.

Compatibility Requirements:

Wiring Base Assemblies

The module is used with wiring base assemblies. Two types are described:

POINT I/O 4 Channel IO-Link Master Module with 1734-TB, 1734-TBS, 1734-TB3, or 1734-TB3S Wiring Base Assembly

This assembly consists of a 1734-MB mounting base and a 1734-RTB or 1734-RTBS removable terminal block.

Diagram showing the 1734-TB wiring base assembly components:

1. Module locking mechanism, 2. Slide-in writable label, 3. Insertable I/O module, 4. Removable terminal block (RTB) handle, 5. Removable terminal block, 6. Terminal base, 7. Interlocking side pieces, 8. Mechanical keying (orange), 9. DIN rail locking screw (orange), 10. Module wiring diagram.

POINT I/O 4 Channel IO-Link Master Module with 1734-TOP, 1734-TOPS, 1734-TOP3, or 1734-TOP3S One-piece Terminal Base

This assembly uses a one-piece terminal base.

Diagram showing the 1734-TOP wiring base assembly components:

1. Module locking mechanism, 2. Slide-in writable label, 3. Insertable I/O module, 4. Terminal block handle, 5. One-piece terminal base, 6. Interlocking side pieces, 7. Mechanical keying (orange), 8. DIN rail locking screw (orange), 9. Module wiring diagram.

Installation

Install the Mounting Base

To install the mounting base on the DIN rail:

  1. Position the mounting base vertically above the installed units (adapter, power supply, or existing module). Slide the mounting base until the interlocking side pieces engage the adjacent module or adapter.
  2. Slide the mounting base down, allowing the interlocking side pieces to engage the adjacent module or adapter.
  3. Press firmly to seat the mounting base on the DIN rail. The base snaps into place. Ensure the orange DIN rail locking screw is horizontal and engaged with the DIN rail.

Install the Module

The module can be installed before or after the base. Ensure the mounting base is correctly keyed before installing the module. The mounting base locking screw must be positioned horizontally.

  • 1734-TB Base: Use a bladed screwdriver to rotate the keyswitch on the mounting base clockwise until the number required for the module type aligns with the notch. Notch position 2 is shown.
  • 1734-TOP Base: Use a bladed screwdriver to rotate the keyswitch to align the number with the notch. Notch position 2 is shown.

Verify the DIN rail locking screw is horizontal; the module cannot be inserted if the locking mechanism is unlocked. Insert the module straight down into the mounting base. Press to secure; the module locks into place.

Install the Removable Terminal Block (RTB)

An RTB is supplied with the wiring base assembly. Pull up on the RTB handle to remove it, allowing the mounting base to be removed without disconnecting wiring. To reinsert the RTB:

  1. Insert the end opposite the handle into the base unit. This end has a curved section that engages the wiring base.
  2. Rotate the terminal block into the wiring base until it locks in place.
  3. If an I/O module is installed, snap the RTB handle into place on the module.

WARNING: Connecting or disconnecting the RTB with field-side power applied can cause an electrical arc, potentially leading to an explosion in hazardous locations. Ensure power is removed or the area is nonhazardous before proceeding.

For 1734-RTBS and 1734-RTB3S models, to latch/unlatch wires, insert a bladed screwdriver (e.g., 1492-N90, 3mm blade) into the opening at approximately 73° (blade parallel to the opening's top surface) and push gently.

Remove a Mounting Base

To remove a mounting base, first remove any installed module and the module to its right. Remove the RTB if wired.

  1. Unlatch the RTB handle on the I/O module.
  2. Pull on the RTB handle to remove the RTB.
  3. Press the module lock on the top of the module.
  4. Pull the I/O module out of the base.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 for the module to the right.
  6. Use a small bladed screwdriver to rotate the orange base locking screw to a vertical position to release the locking mechanism.
  7. Lift straight up to remove.

Wire the Module

Refer to the following diagrams and tables for wiring:
