Payne 45MBFA Floor Console Unit Ductless System
Sizes 9K to 16K
Product Data
The Payne 45MBFA series ductless system is a matched combination of an outdoor condensing unit and an indoor fan coil unit connected by refrigerant tubing and wires. The fan coil can be mounted on the floor or against the wall, offering flexible design solutions for various space requirements, including additions, special space needs, or historical renovations. It serves as an ideal complement to ducted systems where ductwork is impractical or expensive.
The compact indoor fan coil units are attractively styled, unobtrusive, and designed to blend with most room decors. Advanced system components ensure reliable cooling performance with low sound levels. The ductless systems are quiet, eliminating the noise associated with indoor compressors and ductwork. For security, the outdoor and indoor units are connected only by refrigerant piping and wiring, preventing intruders from crawling through ductwork. Outdoor units can be positioned close to an outside wall for protection from weather and vandalism.
Servicing and maintenance are simplified with easy access to the control compartment and draw-thru coil design for quick cleaning. Indoor units feature cleanable filters, self-diagnostics, and a refrigerant leak detection system.

Application Data
Unit Selection
Select equipment to either match or is slightly less than the anticipated peak load. This provides better humidity control, fewer unit cycles, and less part-load operation. For units used in spaces with high sensible loads, base equipment selection on unit sensible load, not on total anticipated load. Adjust for anticipated room wet bulb temperature to avoid undersizing equipment.
Unit Mounting (Indoor)
Refer to the unit's installation instructions for further details. Units should be level in all planes. Provide adequate clearance for airflow. Select a location that provides the best air circulation for the room. Units should be positioned on the floor, against the wall for best air circulation. Avoid obstructing the return and discharge with furniture or curtains. Use an outside wall if available for easier piping. Position the unit to face the normal location of room occupants.
Mounting Template: Refer to the unit's installation instructions for details on marking the location of wiring and refrigeration line holes.
Support: Adequate support must be provided for the fan coil unit. Refer to "DIMENSIONS AND CLEARANCES" and "SPECIFICATIONS" for unit weight and mounting bracket locations.

Drain Connections
Install drains according to local plumbing codes. An accessory condensate pump may be required if gravity drainage is inadequate. Drain size is 5/8 in (16mm).
Refrigerant Lines
General Refrigerant Line Sizing:
- Outdoor units are shipped with a full charge of R-454B refrigerant.
- Refrigerant lines should not be buried. If burial is necessary, no more than 36 inches (914 mm) should be buried. A minimum 6-inch (152 mm) vertical rise to the service valves is required to prevent refrigerant migration.
- Insulate lines with a minimum of 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) thick closed-cell insulation for long-line applications.
- Isolate interconnecting tubing from the building structure to prevent vibration or noise transmission.
Wiring
All wires must be sized per NEC (National Electrical Code) or CEC (Canadian Electrical Code) and local codes. Use the Electrical Data table for minimum circuit amps (MCA) and maximum overcurrent protection (MOCP) to size wires and disconnect fuses/breakers correctly.
Recommended Connection Method for Power and Communication Wiring:
The main power is supplied to the outdoor unit. The field supplies 14/3 stranded wire with ground (600V insulation rating) for power/communication wiring between the outdoor and indoor units. This consists of four wires: two for AC power, one for communication (S), and one ground wire. Wiring between indoor and outdoor units is polarity sensitive. BX wire is not recommended. If communication issues arise, a 14/2 stranded shielded wire can be used for L2 and (S), landing the shield to ground at the outdoor unit only.
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE HAZARD: Failure to follow these cautions may result in equipment damage or improper operation. Wires should be sized based on NEC and local codes.
Ensure all wiring is tightly connected to prevent overheating or unit malfunction. No wire should touch refrigerant tubing, the compressor, or moving parts. Disconnecting means must be provided, located within sight, and readily accessible.
Control System
The unit is equipped with a microprocessor control system for safety and optimal comfort. Thermistors in the fan coil air inlet and indoor coil monitor system operation. Heat pump units also have a thermistor on the outdoor coil. These sensors maintain the unit within acceptable parameters and control the operating mode.
Wireless Remote Control
A wireless remote control (RG10L5) is supplied for system operation. It allows control of various functions including mode, temperature, fan speed, and swing. Multiple units can be controlled by a single remote if they are within range.
Wired Remote Control (Optional)
An optional wired remote controller is available for system operation. The kit includes the controller and a connecting cable. The controller displays temperature in °F or °C.
