Instruction Manual
Stock No: 146-9091 & 146-9089
Introduction
The RS PRO RS-172 and RS-172TK Temperature & Humidity Dataloggers are designed with high-accuracy sensors for precise environmental monitoring. These devices offer high accuracy, fast response, and stability, making them ideal for collecting temperature and humidity data over extended periods.
Functions and Technical Specifications
Functions
The dataloggers efficiently monitor temperature and humidity values. Readings are saved internally and can be easily retrieved via USB connection to a PC. The LCD display shows current readings, maximum (MAX), minimum (MIN), time, date, and temperature or humidity values.
Note
Always place the datalogger upright. In environments with low temperatures and high humidity, ensure the device is kept upright after measurement until any condensed moisture evaporates before reading data. Connecting the datalogger to a PC can help conserve battery power.
Features
- Memory: 32700 values for RS-172; 67584 values for RS-172TK.
- LCD display for easy viewing of logging information.
- Selectable measurement cycle: 1 second to 24 hours (RS-172); 1 second to 12 hours (RS-172TK, settable via PC).
- Data download via PC USB port.
- Alarm display when user-defined maximum or minimum values are exceeded.
- Analysis software included for viewing logged data graphically.

Operation Instructions
1. Battery Sign: An indicator appears when the battery is low, signaling the need for replacement. The battery life is over 3 months.
2. TIME: Displays the current time.
3. DATE: Displays the current date.
4. Time and Date Switching: Time and date automatically switch modes every 10 seconds.
5. MAX Display: Shows the maximum measured value during operation.
6. MIN Display: Shows the minimum measured value during operation.
7. REC Sign: Indicates that the data logger is currently recording.
8. FULL Sign: Indicates that the memory is full, and the logger will stop recording.
9. %RH Sign: Indicates that the logger is measuring humidity.
10. °C: Centigrade temperature unit.
11. °F: Fahrenheit temperature unit.
12. MAX/MIN Button: Pressing this button holds the MAX, MIN values, along with the time and date. The time and date also switch every 10 seconds. If no key is pressed for 40 seconds, the device automatically exits MAX/MIN mode and returns to data hold/measure mode.
13. Loading Data: The LCD displays "-PC-" during data loading. Once complete, the logger shows the current measurement value but stops recording. The logger must be reset to resume recording. Data can only be viewed from the logger itself. All settings are managed via the PC software.
14. Alarm Function:
- When a measured value exceeds the set upper or lower limit, the alarm LED blinks once per minute. A blinking red LED indicates a temperature limit breach, while a blinking yellow LED indicates a humidity limit breach.
- When exceeding limits, the alarm LED blinks at the recording rate. Red LED blinking twice quickly signifies a high TK1 temperature limit breach, or once for a low TK1 limit breach. Yellow LED blinking twice signifies a high TK2 limit breach, or once for a low TK2 limit breach (RS-172TK).
15. "-LO-" Sign: Indicates a loose connection of the temperature/humidity sensor. Reinstall the sensor by opening the back cover until the correct measurement value is displayed.
Software Installation and Application
Software Installation:
- Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. The installation interface will appear shortly. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the software.
- After installation, keep the CD in the drive and connect the datalogger to the PC using the USB cable. A USB driver installation window will pop up. Follow the instructions, select the CD driver path, and the USB driver installation will complete.
Software Application: The Datalogger USB software is used to collect data from the datalogger connected to a PC or notebook. Data can be displayed graphically or exported to programs like Excel. Key functions are detailed in the main software window. Refer to the PC software help instruction (RS-172TK) for more details.
System Requirements:
- Operating System: Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Vista.
- Minimum Hardware: PC or Notebook with Pentium 90MHz or higher, 32 MB RAM; at least 7 MB of free hard disk space for HT Datalogger USB software.
- Recommended Display Resolution: 1024 x 768 with High Color (16-bit).

Datalogger Setup
Click the setup icon in the menu bar to access the setup window. Descriptions for each field are provided below the illustration:
- Samprate Setup: Sets the logging rate. Specific data can be entered in the left edit box, and the time unit selected from the right combo box.
- LED Flash Cycle Setup: User-configurable cycle for LED flashing. Selecting "No Light" conserves battery life.
- Manual/Automatic Buttons: Allow users to start data logging immediately upon exiting the setup window (Automatic) or at a later time (Manual).
- Alarm Setup: Configure high/low temperature and humidity limits, and disable LED flashing to save battery.
- Circulating Record/No Circulating: Determines whether the logger overwrites old data (Circulating Record) or stops when full (No Circulating).
Click 'SETUP' to save changes, 'DEFAULT' to reset to factory settings, or 'CANCEL' to abort.
Note: All stored data will be permanently erased upon setup completion. Save data by clicking 'Cancel' and then downloading it before proceeding with setup.
Ensure the battery has sufficient charge for the entire logging duration. Install a new battery before critical data logging if in doubt.
Datalogger Download
To transfer stored readings to a PC:
- Connect the datalogger to the same USB port used for initialization.
- Open the HT Datalogger software if it is not already running.
- Click the 'Download' icon.
- The download window will appear. Press 'DOWNLOAD' to begin transferring readings.
Upon successful transfer, the data graph window will appear, displaying detailed information such as time, sampling rate, data numbers, alarm limits, MAX/MIN data, and average data.
Graphing and Data Visualization
Zoom In: Press and drag the left mouse button to draw a rectangle around the desired area. Release the mouse button. Use the horizontal scrollbar to view all data. Use the left vertical scrollbar for temperature data and the right vertical scrollbar for humidity data.
Zoom Out: Click 'Undozoom' and 'YAxis Set' to return to the full view and adjust the Temp and RH Y-axes.
View Options: Customize the graph window by selecting which data traces to display (Temp, Temp Alarm Hi/Low, RH, RH Alarm Hi/Low, Mark Points, X Axis, Y Axis). Add or remove grid lines. 'Mark Points' places dots on data points, breaking the continuous trace.
Color Setup: Configure background, grid, temperature, and humidity colors.
List View: Click the list icon to view data in a tabular format.
File Save and Open
Save File: Click the save icon to open the 'Save As' dialog. Name the file and save it with the default ".record" extension for reopening in the HT Datalogger software, or as a ".xls" file for spreadsheet programs.
Open File: To open an existing data file for viewing in the graph window, click the open icon and select the previously saved file.
Print Graph and List
Click the graph icon to display data as a graph, then click the print icon to print it. Click the list icon to display data as a list, then click the print icon to print the list.
