Safety Precautions
CAUTION
This is an electrical device. Exercise caution during installation and operation. Remote control of appliances may lead to unintentional or automated activation. Do not use this Z-Wave device to control electric heaters or other appliances that pose a risk of fire, burns, or electrical shock when unattended. To prevent overheating and potential damage to equipment, do not install this unit to control receptacles, motor-operated appliances, fluorescent lighting fixtures, or transformer-supplied fixtures.

Installation Guide
Before You Install
This switch is intended for installation in accordance with the National Electric Code and local regulations. Professional installation by a licensed electrician is recommended.
Wiring: Read It!
- Check the Load: Ensure you are connecting to lighting loads only (150W LED, 500W incandescent). Do not connect to outlets or tube lights. Use quality lighting fixtures only.
- Power Off: Turn off power at the circuit breaker panel before starting. If multiple circuits are present in the box, turn off all relevant circuits.
- Check the Wires: Identify and label the load (often black), line (often black), neutral (often white), and ground (often bare) wires. Use 14 AWG wires only. Do not rely solely on a multimeter for wire identification. For assistance, visit support.getzooz.com and send pictures of your setup before disconnecting wires.
- Remove the Old Switch: Disconnect wires and label them using the provided stickers.
- Connect the Z-Wave® Switch: Follow the wiring diagram precisely.
Single Pole Installation Diagram Description
The single-pole wiring diagram illustrates connecting the ground wire to the ground terminal, the power source wire to the Line terminal, and the load wire to the Load terminal. It is critical that Line and Load are not swapped. A white jumper wire connects the neutral wire bundle to the Neutral terminal on the switch.
3-Way and 4-Way Installation Diagrams
Detailed diagrams for 3-way and 4-way installations (Options 1 & 2) and a 4-way installation are provided. These diagrams illustrate rewiring configurations for different switch box setups. Note: These diagrams are complex and require careful identification of wires. For visual reference and specific instructions, consult the original document. Zooz switches are compatible only with mechanical on/off or momentary switches in 3-way/4-way setups, not with illuminated or electronic add-on switches.
How to Install Wires
- Lift Screw: Carefully pull the screw away from the switch to loosen it. Do not force it. No power tools should be used.
- Press Down: Press the loose screw down with your finger to engage the thread.
- Insert Wire: Ensure the wire is straight and insert it into the terminal while holding the screw down. Do not wrap wires around terminal screws. Strip wires to 1/2-5/8 inches.
- Tighten: Turn the screw clockwise to tighten the wire. Do not overtighten.
Complete Installation
Secure the Z-Wave® switch in the box using mounting screws, handling wires with care. Insulate all bare wires and screws with electrical tape. Install the wall plate and restore power to the circuit.
Test the Switch
The LED indicator should illuminate when power is restored if the light is off. Tap the switch button to turn the light on and tap again to turn it off. If the test fails, verify power restoration, wiring accuracy, and that the load is not too large, causing overheating and shutdown.
Z-Wave Control & Programming
Adding a Device (Inclusion)
Initiate inclusion (pairing) via your Z-Wave hub's app or web interface. Products with SmartStart can be added by scanning the Z-Wave QR code on the product. The device will automatically join the network within 10 minutes of being powered on. For traditional inclusion, finalize by tapping the switch button 3 times quickly. For SmartStart, scan the QR code or enter the 5-digit DSK.
The LED indicator will blink blue during communication and turn green (success) or red (failure) for 3 seconds.
Programming Scene Controller Buttons
You can program the buttons on the Scene Controller in two primary ways to control other Z-Wave devices:
Scene Control
Ideal for triggering preset scenes involving multiple devices or controlling smart bulbs. Supports 1-tap, 2-tap, 3-tap, 4-tap, 5-tap, button held, and button released actions for each button.
Direct Association
Allows direct control of other Z-Wave devices. Suitable for controlling Z-Wave smart bulbs or acting as a virtual add-on for existing Z-Wave switches and dimmers. Use only with Z-Wave devices included with the same security level. Supports 1-tap for on/off (Group 2) and button hold/release for dimming (Group 3).
Programming methods depend on your Z-Wave system's capabilities and interface. Scan QR codes provided in the manual for step-by-step instructions specific to your hub (Z-Box Hub, SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant).
Button Functionality Mapping
The ZEN35 buttons can be configured for various actions:
- Switch Button: Reports to the hub (Lifeline, Basic Set, Multilevel Set/Start/Stop) and supports Scene 5 actions.
- Button 1-4: Each button can be configured for Basic Set and Multilevel control (Groups 5-12 respectively) and supports specific scenes (Scene 1-4).
Tap Actions:
- Switch Button: Tap x1 for on/off of the connected load or Scene 5 pressed. Tap x2, x3, x4, x5 for Scene 5 multi-tap. Hold to dim or for Scene 5 held. Release to stop dimming or for Scene 5 released.
- Buttons 1-4: Tap x1 for Scene 1-4 pressed. Tap x2, x3, x4, x5 for Scene 1-4 multi-tap. Hold for Scene 1-4 held. Release for Scene 1-4 released.
How it Works (Button Mapping Summary)
The device maps button presses and holds to Z-Wave commands and scenes. For example, a single tap on the main switch button controls the connected load (on/off) or triggers Scene 5. Tapping Buttons 1-4 triggers their respective scenes (Scene 1-4).
Troubleshooting
Device Not Adding
- Initiate exclusion on your hub, then tap the switch button 3 times quickly.
- Tap the switch button 4-5 times quickly during the adding process.
- Move the Z-Wave gateway controller (hub) closer to the switch.
- Consult support.getzooz.com for hub-specific troubleshooting.
Manual Control Not Working
- Turn off power at the breaker and check for loose wires.
- Exclude the switch from the hub or perform a factory reset if manual control was accidentally disabled.
- Test with a single incandescent bulb to rule out load incompatibility.
Exclusion (Unpairing)
- Bring your Z-Wave controller (hub) close to the switch.
- Put the Z-Wave hub into exclusion mode.
- Tap the switch button 3 times quickly. The LED indicator will blink blue.
- Your hub will confirm exclusion, and the switch's LED will turn green for 3 seconds. The device will disappear from your controller's list.
Factory Reset
If your primary controller is unavailable, you can reset the switch to factory settings. Press and hold the switch button for 20 seconds until the LED indicator turns solid red. Release the button, then immediately tap remote button 1 once to complete the reset. All button LEDs will flash red and cycle colors upon successful reset. Note: This erases all recorded activity and custom settings.
