Grainfather SF50 Conical Fermenter
Assembly and Usage Guide
Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Grainfather SF50 Conical Fermenter. This guide provides quick and easy steps for assembly and use. Please read the safety information and cleaning advice before proceeding.
Safety Information
- Read all instructions before use.
- Always use equipment on a flat and stable surface.
- When the fermenter is full, do not lift it; only wheel it on flat surfaces.
- When equipment is stationary, ensure that the castors are locked into place.
- Ensure that all screws and nuts are fully tightened.
Note: Failure to follow safety information may result in serious injury and could void your product's warranty.
Parts List
- 1. Airlock
- 2. Bung
- 3. Thermowell, o-ring and nut
- 4. Legs
- 5. Dome nuts
- 6. Lid
- 7. Lockable castors (wheels)
- 8. Body
- 9. Thermowell hole
- 10. Sample valve and nut
- 11. Tail piece
- 12. Dump valve
Assembling the Legs
- Remove the large dome nuts (5) from the body (8) of the fermenter.
- Gently lay the fermenter on its side, using a mat or towel underneath to prevent scratches.
- Mount each of the three legs (4) onto the threaded bolts and secure the dome nuts back into place. Ensure all legs are adjusted to the same height.
Note: Use the extra holes on the leg to adjust the height of your fermenter.
Assembling the Castors (Wheels)
- Push the tab down on each of the castors (7) to lock them in place.
- Gently lay the fermenter on its side, using a mat or towel to avoid scratches.
- Screw the castors onto the bottom of the legs.
Assembling the Thermowell
- Remove the nut from the thermowell (3), leaving the silicone o-ring in place.
- From inside the fermenter, feed the thermowell through the thermowell hole (9) on the side of the body.
- Thread the nut back onto the thermowell from the outside of the fermenter and tighten by hand.
Assembling the Airlock & Tail Piece
Airlock:
Take the three-piece airlock (1) and insert the tail into the bung (2).
Tail Piece:
To insert the sample valve tail piece (11), take the tail piece and insert the end with the two o-rings into the sample valve (10) on the inside of the fermenter. Twist the tail piece so the other end points down.
How to Use
Before use, it is recommended to clean your SF50 and all components using the Grainfather High Performance Cleaner.
- Fill the fermenter using a syphon or a counterflow wort chiller if using a Grainfather brewing system. Ensure the volume is at least 15L.
- Secure the lid and push the bung and airlock into the hole on the fermenter lid, ensuring a tight fit.
- Refer to your recipe for the required fermentation temperature and keep the SF50 in a location that maintains this temperature.
Note: The SF50 can be used with the Glycol Chiller Adapter (GCA) Kit for more accurate temperature control during fermentation.
- Your recipe will determine the fermentation time. Fermentation is complete when SG readings are stable for two consecutive days.
Top Tips
- It is recommended to dump dead yeast and dry hops from the dump valve every 2-3 days during fermentation to prevent clogging.
- The sample valve can be used to collect samples and test beer gravity. Open the ball valve and collect beer in an appropriate vessel.
- The sample valve can also be used to transfer beer after fermentation. Connect a hose (10 mm inner diameter) to the opening and open the sample valve, or use with Grainfather pressure transfer (sold separately).
Advice for Cleaning & Storage
- After fermentation, transfer the beer to a keg or bottles.
- Rinse out remaining trub and fill the fermenter halfway with water.
- Add the required amount of Grainfather High Performance Cleaner to the water and stir to dissolve.
- Scrub the sides of the fermenter and lid with a non-abrasive cloth, ensuring all surfaces are cleaned.
- Rinse and drain the cleaning liquid using the taps.
- Remove, disassemble, and clean the taps.
- Once all parts are completely dry, reassemble and store.
