Giant MPH Brake System User Manual
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the GIANT MPH Brake System. The MPH Brake System is an affordable hydraulic disc brake system that offers high braking power while being operated by a mechanical lever.
Key Features
- Operates hydraulic disc brakes with a mechanical brake/shift integrated lever. It can convert existing mechanical brake systems into a semi-hydraulic system without replacing brake or shift levers.
- Combines the simplicity of cable-actuated systems with the high braking power and smooth operation of hydraulic systems.
- Offers balanced lever operation for precise and easy adjustment of braking force and speed.
- Maintains braking power even under intense use or on long, steep descents.
- Optimized for excellent braking performance on both dry and wet surfaces.
- Easily mounts to the GIANT CONTACT Aero Light stem for a cohesive appearance.
Attention
To ensure safety, please follow the instructions below:
- This cable-actuated hydraulic disc brake system is sealed and has passed high-pressure testing. Do not loosen or remove any bolts or screws unless specifically indicated. Doing so may cause oil leaks and system failure.
- If you notice any signs of oil leakage, stop riding immediately and contact your nearest GIANT/LIV authorized dealer for maintenance and repair.
- Always confirm that the brake system is functioning correctly before riding.
- Oil or grease on the disc rotor or brake pads will significantly reduce braking power. Do not use any cleaners or solvents on the brake system unless specifically instructed.
- Brake pads and disc rotors are consumable parts and are expected to wear out or become damaged. Minor scratches on the disc surface are normal. Inspect the disc rotor condition before each ride. If the disc is deformed or significantly worn (less than 1.5mm thickness), replace it immediately.
- Prolonged or heavy braking can cause the disc rotor to become extremely hot. Avoid touching it to prevent burns. Do not cool the brake components with liquid.
- Before adjusting the brakes, always ensure that the brake components have cooled down. Failure to do so may lead to damage or malfunction.
- Worn brake pads with oil or dirt contamination must be replaced immediately. The minimum pad thickness, including the backplate, is 2.7mm.
- Braking performance may decrease in rain or muddy conditions. Noise, such as squeaking, may also increase, but it should return to normal when dry.
- Keep your fingers away from the rotating disc rotor. Pinching your fingers can cause serious injury.
- If you hear persistent squeaking along with reduced braking power, the pads and disc rotor may be contaminated. Please contact your nearest GIANT/LIV authorized dealer.

Important Information
The GIANT MPH Brake System is a cable-actuated hydraulic system. The main brake body has several unused ports from the manufacturing process. These unused ports are covered with special screws to meet sealing requirements. The diagram below shows these unused ports and the special screws used to seal them.
Absolutely do not loosen, tighten, or adjust these screws.
If you find any leaks, corrosion, or damaged parts, stop riding immediately and contact your nearest GIANT/LIV authorized dealer.
Warning: Failure to follow the above precautions may result in sudden loss of braking power.
Operation
Warning: Insufficient braking power compromises ride comfort and safety. Always ensure both brakes are functioning correctly.
Always check the braking performance before riding.
- Ensure the brake lever feels firm when squeezed and that the brake engages quickly.
- Straddle the bicycle, grip the brake levers firmly, and push the bicycle forward. The bicycle should remain stationary. If the bicycle moves forward, the braking power is too weak.
Note: If you encounter any problems, please contact your nearest GIANT/LIV authorized dealer.
Maintenance
It is recommended to inspect the brake system after each ride. Wipe off any dirt or sweat from the brake body with a damp cloth. Do not use any cleaners or solvents on the brake body, hoses, calipers, brake pads, or disc rotors.
Brake fluid degrades over time and with use. Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure the MPH Brake System performs optimally.
It is recommended to replace the brake fluid approximately every year.
Replacing brake fluid requires specialized knowledge and experience. For service, please contact your GIANT/LIV authorized dealer.

Brake Pad Replacement
Note: It is recommended to carry spare brake pads for long-distance rides like Gran Fondos. This section explains the correct procedure for replacing brake pads. When performing repairs or maintenance outdoors, ensure you are in a safe location and aware of your surroundings.
Required Parts and Tools:
- GIANT MPH Brake Pad x1
- Long-nose pliers x1
- Calipers x1 (for regular inspection)
- Plastic tire lever x1
- Remove the wheel.
- Straighten the tip of the safety pin and remove it from the caliper. (See Figure A)
- Remove the brake pads. (See Figure B)
- Measure the pad thickness using calipers. The minimum thickness, including the backplate, is 2.7mm. (See Figure C)
- Using a plastic tire lever, gently push the piston back into the caliper. (See Figure D)
Attention: If the piston is difficult to move, do not force it back into the caliper. Do not squeeze the brake lever with the pads removed. If you encounter problems, please contact your nearest GIANT/LIV authorized dealer.

- Check the correct orientation of the new brake pads. Place the spring between the pads before inserting them into the caliper opening. (See Figures E & F)
- Insert the new safety pin and bend the tip 90 degrees. (See Figure G)
- Reinstall the wheel onto the bicycle. Ensure the disc rotor is correctly positioned between the pads. Insert the axle and tighten it to the specified torque. (See Figure H)
- Squeeze the brake lever several times to check the lever feel. Test ride in a safe location.
Attention:
- When new brake pads are installed, the lever pull may feel significantly longer or deeper than before. This is due to the caliper design and should resolve after a few lever actuations. Normally, brake cable adjustment is not required after replacing brake pads, but if this sensation persists, contact your nearest GIANT/LIV authorized dealer.
- When new brake pads or disc rotors are installed, initial braking power will be reduced. Test ride in a safe location and perform a break-in procedure.
- To properly bed in new brakes, ride the bicycle in a safe area and apply the brake levers several times. Do not lock the front wheel or cause the tires to slip. After a few attempts, braking power should significantly increase.
