Setting Baud Rate and Address
PTZ cameras require an address and connection speed for proper operation. Default settings are Address "1", Baud Rate 2400, and Pelco-D protocol. If your camera was part of a bundle, the address might differ; check the Quick Install Poster. If using a single PTZ camera, changes may not be necessary. Consult your DVR's manual for required settings.
Settings are made using DIP switches inside the camera. It's easier to set these before connecting. Access the DIP switch panel by removing the clear dome (twist metal collar counterclockwise, remove six screws). The circuit board with DIP switches is visible below the camera.
DIP switches are binary (1=On, 0=Off). On the QD6531Z, switches 1-6 set the address, switches 7-8 set the baud rate, and switch 9 sets the communication protocol (Pelco-D or Pelco-P).
The default baud rate of 2400 allows control up to 3,000 feet. Higher settings may be required by some DVRs but reduce control distance. Areas with electronic interference may need heavier or shielded cabling.

Connecting the Camera
To operate the camera, connect it to a system supporting PTZ operations. Connect power, video, and control wires. Temporary connection to the DVR is recommended for testing settings before final mounting.
Power and Video Connection
- Connect the BNC and power leads from the camera to a video/power siamese cable.
- Connect the power lead on the other end to a 12V, 800mA to 2A power adapter or distribution panel.
- Connect the BNC connector to a Video In port on the DVR.
Important: Ensure the "male" power end (red plug) connects to the camera's power lead. Use a surge protector (UL-1449 rated, clamping voltage 330 or lower, Joule rating 400+, response time 10 nanoseconds or less) for the power adapter.
PTZ Control Connection
Connect the two control wire leads to the RS485 ports on the DVR's alarm block (labeled "RS485", "RS422", "PTZ", or "P/Z"). The RS485A wire (red tip) is positive (+), and RS485B (black tip) is negative (-). Secure wires using screws or spring-loaded locks on the PTZ blocks.
Use 24-gauge wires for the control connection. If your camera came as part of a package, these wires may be included separately or with the video/power cable. Consult your DVR's manual for specific DVR settings (a sample screen is shown).
Installing the Camera
Site Selection
Choose a proper site considering field of view and other factors:
- Distance: Signal degradation increases with distance. Use shielded RG59 for distances over 200'. Locate power supply near the camera for runs exceeding 200' to prevent power level drop.
- Interference: Avoid placing near high voltage wires or sources of electrical interference.
- Accessibility: Place camera out of reach to avoid damage.
- Weather: Avoid direct exposure to rain or snow on the lens. The camera is weatherproof but not submersible. Ensure all power and video connections are protected from the elements.
- Windows: Do not place behind windows to prevent reflections and IR LED glare.
- Light Levels: Ensure similar light levels between the camera and the target area for optimal results.
Camera operates between 14°F to 122°F (-10°C to 50°C) with up to 95% relative humidity. Consider environmental factors like wind chill.
Mounting the Camera
Your camera includes ceiling and wall mounts. The mounting surface must be sturdy and support at least five times the camera's weight.
- Run the power/video/data extension cable from the DVR to the camera location.
- Use the mounting bracket to mark hole positions. Drill holes with a 5mm drill bit. Drill a cable hole if needed, ensuring it's large enough for the cable.
- Insert metal anchors into the mounting holes, split-end first, to expand as screws are tightened.
- Connect the camera cable to the extension cable, passing it through the bracket.
- Mount the bracket, ensuring cables are not pinched. Use a level to ensure the camera is horizontal.
- Secure the camera to the mount using the included bolts.
Important: Do not allow the camera cable to be subject to pinching, tight bends, or severe constriction, as this can damage the cable over time, leading to signal loss or fire hazards. Ensure a clear work area below the mounting point during installation to prevent injury or damage from a falling camera.
Which Cable to Use?
Cabling needs depend on the distance between your camera and DVR. Q-See offers various cables, available from your retailer or at www.q-seestore.com.
Q-See Model Number | Maximum Run Length | Quality Output | Type | Shielded | Plenum Rated | Pre-Attached Connector | Video | Audio | Power | Usage |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
QS50B (50'), QS100B (100') | 180' | Standard | 75Ω Video Cable | No | No | BNC | N/A | 2.1mm | Indoor/Outdoor. Do not run inside walls or underground | |
QSVRG60 (60'), QSVRG100 (100'), QSVRG200 (200') | 800' | High | RG-59 | Yes - UL Rated | No | BNC | N/A | 2.1mm | Indoor/Outdoor. In-wall or along wall | |
QS59500 (500'), QS591000 (1000') | 800' | High | RG-59 | Yes - UL Rated | No | BNC | N/A | 2.1mm | None | Indoor/Outdoor. In-wall or along wall |
To extend the RS485 data cable, use any 24-gauge wire, including Cat 5.
To maintain video quality: Always use shielded cables. Check state and local laws before installing cameras (2011 NEC 820.44). For best results, run one continuous cable between the camera and DVR. If more length is required, use the minimum number of inter-connection points possible.
Other notes: For cable runs exceeding 800ft, use RG-6 coaxial cable. If your home or business is pre-wired with CAT-5 cable, you can run up to 1000ft using powered video baluns.
Operation
Control the camera manually via a PTZ keyboard or the DVR's PTZ controls. Remote control is possible through the DVR's internet connection, a remote monitoring program, or a smartphone app.
Cruise Setup
You can program a "cruise" (also called "scan" or "tour") for the camera to perform a set search pattern. Up to 128 preset points can be stored. Consult your DVR's manual for specific instructions on programming points and cruises.
General Cruise Setup Procedure:
- Pivot the camera to a desired starting point and save it.
- Select one or more points for the camera to move to in sequence to build a scan path. Save the path.
- Points can be set using a PTZ keyboard or the DVR's on-screen controls. Directional control is achieved by clicking directional arrows on the DVR mouse. The camera has 360° continuous horizontal rotation and 70° vertical movement.
On-screen controls include zoom, focus, and iris. The QD6531Z features a 3x optical zoom lens (5-15mm), auto-focus, and auto-iris. Objects closer than 20" (50cm) may appear blurry due to auto-focus limits.
Of the 128 available presets, 1-80 are for defining camera positions, and the remaining 48 are for commands. Preset 95 is used to erase previously configured presets.
Example 1: Setting a Cruise
This example uses a QT-Series DVR without a PTZ keyboard. Commands may differ slightly; consult your system's manual.
- In your DVR's PTZ settings window, select the Advanced tab and then Preset 1.
- Rotate the camera to the desired position using the arrow controls.
- Click Save.
- Select Preset 2. Rotate camera to the desired second location and click Save. Repeat for additional positions (up to a maximum of 16 per cruise).
- Return to the PTZ window and click the Cruise button for your channel.
- Click Add.
- Double-click the new cruise setting to begin loading your presets.
- Click the '+' button to open the Preset pop-up window. Select your starting preset point, speed (1-8, 8 being fastest), and stop time (duration the camera stays at the location).
- Repeat for each preset.
- Click OK to save settings and close windows until you reach the PTZ Settings window. Click Apply to save all settings.
- Open PTZ controls from the Control Bar, select your cruise from the pull-down menu, and click to begin.
Example 2: Setting a Track
Use the Track settings in the Advanced tab. Click the Track button for the correct channel, use directional controls to point the camera to your desired starting point, and click Start Record. The DVR will record your movements, including delays. Click Stop Record to end. Clicking Start Track in the PTZ control window will start the camera on its track.
