Märklin 38441 ES44AC Union Pacific Diesel Locomotive
This document provides instructions for operating and maintaining the Märklin 38441 ES44AC Union Pacific diesel locomotive.
Safety Notes
- This locomotive is designed for Märklin AC, Märklin Delta, Märklin Digital, or DCC operating systems.
- Use only power supply units and transformers compatible with your local power system.
- Never power the locomotive from more than one source.
- Adhere to the safety instructions provided with your operating system.
- For conventional operation, the track connection must be interference-suppressed using the 74046 set. This set is not suitable for digital operation.
- Avoid exposing the model to direct sunlight, extreme temperature changes, or high humidity.
- WARNING: Sharp edges and points may be present. LEDs comply with Laser Class 1 (EN 60825-1).
Important Notes
- Keep operating instructions and packaging as they are part of the product.
- For repairs or spare parts, contact an authorized Märklin dealer.
- Refer to the included warranty card for warranty conditions.
- Disposal information available at: www.maerklin.com/en/imprint.html
Functions
- Automatic recognition of operating mode.
- Mfx technology for Mobile Station / Central Station.
- Factory settings: Name ES44AC 7912 UP, Address MM 44 / DCC 03.
- Locomotive parameters (address, acceleration/braking delay (ABV), maximum speed) can be set via Control Unit, Mobile Station, or Central Station.
- Direction-dependent headlights.
- Various controllable functions are available.
- Full function range is available only with mfx.
- Mode of Operation: Locomotive Engineer. Additional explanations can be found in supplemental instructions.
- In analog operation, only driving and headlight functions are available.
Note on Digital Protocols: The digital protocol with the most features has the highest priority. The order of priority is: 1. mfx, 2. DCC, 3. MM. If multiple protocols are detected, the decoder automatically selects the highest value protocol. Individual protocols can be deactivated using Parameter CV 50.
Controllable Functions
The locomotive features a wide range of controllable functions, including lighting, sound effects, and operational features. These functions are assigned to specific function keys (F0-F29) and can be controlled via various Märklin digital systems (6021, MS I, MS II, CS I, CS II/III). The availability and mapping of functions may vary depending on the system and software version.
Key functions include:
- Headlights/Marker light (F0)
- Smoke generator (F1)
- Operating sounds (F2)
- Horn sounds (long and short) (F3, F8)
- Acceleration/Braking Delay (ABV) (F4)
- Brake squeal (on/off) (F5, F15)
- Cab lighting (F6)
- Shunting gear (F7)
- Number board lights (F9)
- Headlights (long distance, blinking, upper/lower off) (F10, F11, F12, F14)
- Sound effects: Uncoupling, coupling, horn sequences, air brake release, sanding, compressor, diesel refueling, cab radio, bell, blower, etc. (F19-F29)
Note: Functions F16 and above may require MS2 software version 3.55 or later. Some functions are only available in conjunction with other functions or specific modes.
Parameter/Register
The locomotive's digital decoder can be configured using various parameters (CVs). Key parameters include:
- CV 01: Address - Sets the locomotive's digital address (01-80 for 2-digit, 01-127 for 3-digit).
- CV 03: Acceleration Delay - Controls the acceleration ramp time.
- CV 04: Braking Delay - Controls the braking ramp time.
- CV 05: Maximum Speed - Sets the maximum speed of the locomotive.
- CV 08: Reset to Series Value - Resets all parameters to factory defaults.
- CV 50: Alternative Protocols - Allows selection and deactivation of digital protocols (mfx, DCC, MM).
- CV 63: Volume - Adjusts the volume of sound effects.
Note: The current protocol in use cannot be deactivated. Control Unit 6021/Mobile Station 60651/60652 settings may differ.
Operation and Maintenance
Smoke Generator: The smoke generator automatically shuts off after 5 minutes for safety. It holds a maximum of 0.5 ml of smoke fluid, sufficient for approximately 3 cycles of 5 minutes each. Refill only when the reservoir is completely empty to prevent overflow.
Model Size and Curves: This model is larger than standard European loading gauge and may swing out significantly in curves. Check your layout for clearance with signals, masts, bridges, and tunnels before first use. Due to its size and geometry, R1 "S" curves cannot be traversed with coupled cars. However, turnout combinations are manageable.
Coupling: The locomotive is equipped with a close coupler for cars with lower buffer heights. For trouble-free coupling, ensure that the cars being coupled are also equipped with the 72000 close coupler.
General Maintenance: Ensure a permanent, flawless wheel-rail contact for reliable operation. Do not modify any current-conducting parts. Some parts may be offered unpainted or in different colors; parts not listed can only be repaired by the Märklin service department.
