Setting Up the RetroN® 3 HD

The RetroN® 3 HD is a versatile console designed to play games from multiple classic systems. Below is a diagram illustrating the console's ports and switches:

Console Layout Description: The RetroN® 3 HD console features cartridge slots on the top, controller ports on the front, and various switches and ports on the back and bottom. A diagram shows the following numbered components:

  1. SYSTEM SELECTOR SWITCH: Used to choose the system (NES, Genesis/Mega Drive, Super NES) to play.
  2. RESET BUTTON: Located on the front, used to reset the current game.
  3. POWER BUTTON: Located on the front, used to turn the console on or off.
  4. CARTRIDGE SLOT FOR NES®: For inserting NES cartridges.
  5. CARTRIDGE SLOT FOR GENESIS®/MEGA DRIVE: For inserting Genesis or Mega Drive cartridges.
  6. CARTRIDGE SLOT FOR SUPER NES®/SUPER FAMICOM™: For inserting Super NES or Super Famicom cartridges.
  7. PORT FOR NES® CONTROLLER 1: For connecting an NES controller.
  8. PORT FOR NES® CONTROLLER 2: For connecting a second NES controller.
  9. PORT FOR SUPER NES® CONTROLLER 1: For connecting a Super NES controller.
  10. PORT FOR SUPER NES® CONTROLLER 2: For connecting a second Super NES controller.
  11. PORT FOR GENESIS® CONTROLLER 1: For connecting a Genesis controller.
  12. PORT FOR GENESIS® CONTROLLER 2: For connecting a second Genesis controller.
  13. ASPECT RATIO SWITCH: Located on the back, toggles between 16:9 (LEFT) and 4:3 (RIGHT) aspect ratios when using HD output.
  14. OUTPUT PORT: The primary HD video and audio output port.
  15. AV PORT: For composite video and stereo audio output.
  16. MICRO PORT: Used for connecting the power cable.
  17. NTSC/PAL SWITCH FOR NES®: Located on the bottom, selects the video output standard (NTSC or PAL) for NES cartridges.
  18. NTSC/PAL SWITCH FOR SUPER NES®/SUPER FAMICOM™: Located on the bottom, selects the video output standard (NTSC or PAL) for Super NES/Super Famicom cartridges.
  19. NTSC/PAL SWITCH FOR GENESIS®/MEGA DRIVE: Located on the bottom, selects the video output standard (NTSC-U, NTSC-J, or PAL) for Genesis/Mega Drive cartridges.

Setting Up the RetroN® 3 HD via HD Cable

  1. Insert one end of the HD Cable into the OUTPUT PORT on the RetroN® 3 HD.
  2. Insert the other end of the HD Cable into the HD input on your HDTV.
  3. Insert the MICRO CABLE into the MICRO PORT on the RetroN® 3 HD.
  4. Insert the other end of the MICRO CABLE into a power source.
  5. Plug the AC Adapter into a power outlet.

*If AC Adapter is not included, we strongly recommend that you use a USB wall AC Adapter that has a minimum output of 5V 1A.

Setting Up the RetroN® 3 HD via AV Cable

  1. Insert the AV Cable into the AV PORT on the RetroN® 3 HD.
  2. Insert the other end of the AV Cable into the AV input on your TV.
  3. Insert the MICRO CABLE into the MICRO PORT on the RetroN® 3 HD.
  4. Insert the other end of the MICRO CABLE into a power source.
  5. Plug the AC Adapter into a power outlet.

*If AC Adapter is not included, we strongly recommend that you use a USB wall AC Adapter that has a minimum output of 5V 1A.

? Note: Simultaneous video output using both the HD Cable and the AV Cable is not supported.

Aspect Ratio and Region Switches

BEFORE powering on your RetroN® 3 HD, ensure your aspect ratio (via HD Cable only) and region settings are configured correctly. Using the incorrect region setting can cause inaccuracies in in-game speed.

Aspect Ratio Switch

The ASPECT RATIO SWITCH is located on the BACK of the RetroN® 3 HD. Moving the switch to the [LEFT] position selects a 16:9 ratio. Moving the switch to the [RIGHT] position selects a 4:3 ratio. This setting can only be adjusted when using an HD Cable.

? Note: Toggling between the 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios during gameplay might lead to graphical glitches. It is recommended to power off your console before adjusting your preferred aspect ratio.

Region Switches

The region switches are located on the BOTTOM of the RetroN® 3 HD. With the front of the console oriented downwards and the bottom facing you:

  • For NES® or Super NES®: Moving the switch to the [LEFT] position indicates a PAL cartridge. Moving the switch to the [RIGHT] position indicates an NTSC cartridge.
  • For Genesis®/Mega Drive: Moving the switch to the [LEFT] position indicates a PAL cartridge. Moving the switch to the [MIDDLE] position indicates an NTSC-U cartridge. Moving the switch to the [RIGHT] position indicates an NTSC-J cartridge.

Playing Games

  1. Insert the cartridge into its appropriate slot. Multiple compatible cartridges can be inserted simultaneously.
  2. With the RetroN® 3 HD turned OFF, use the SYSTEM SELECTOR SWITCH to choose the system you wish to play.
    • Moving the switch to the [UP] position selects FOR NES®.
    • Moving the switch to the [MIDDLE] position selects FOR GENESIS®/MEGA DRIVE.
    • Moving the switch to the [DOWN] position selects FOR SUPER NES®.
  3. Once the system is selected, press the POWER BUTTON.
  4. If you wish to reset your game, press the RESET BUTTON located on the front of the console.
  5. When you are finished playing, press the POWER BUTTON to turn OFF your console.
  6. To safely remove a cartridge, place one hand firmly on the console and use your other hand to gently lift the cartridge out of the slot.

Using Controllers

With the RetroN® 3 HD turned OFF, insert the controller(s) into their corresponding ports.

The RetroN® 3 HD includes a "Scout" premium controller for Super NES® and a "Squire" premium controller for Genesis®. The console also supports original and third-party controllers. Note that NES® cartridges are only compatible with original and compatible controllers for NES® (not included).
