What is biological CO₂ fertilisation?

CO₂ is the main nutrient which all aquarium plants require in order to grow healthy and strong. In doing so, plants provide the fish and other living organisms in the aquarium with vital oxygen.

The sets produce CO₂ from an organic substrate by natural means, using the activity of harmless micro-organisms. The substrate has a buer system specially developed by JBL to ensure a practically constant production of CO₂ for about 40 days per filling.

Intended use: The product is designed for use in an aquarium only. The product is to be used indoors only.
It is intended for private use only and is not suitable for commercial use.

Use the product only as described in this instruction manual. Any other use will be deemed inappropriate and may result in property damage or personal injury. The product is not a child‘s toy.

Safety instructions

1. Do not use the appliance for any purpose other than that described in these instructions for use.
2. Do not operate or store the unit in places where there is a risk of frost.
3. Appliance may only be used indoors.
4. Appliance may only be used in a dry environment.

Parts and description

(1) JBL PROFLORA CO₂ STARTER BIO SET:

1. STARTER BIO reaction canister (1 x)
2. JBL PROFLORA CO₂ REFILL BIO, component A (1 x), component B (1 x)

Installation:

(Illustration on page 3 shows typical installation examples)

1. Unscrew the cap of the canister and fill component A and component B of the JBL PROFLORA CO₂ REFILL BIO into the reaction canister one after the other. Note: Never fill more than the contents of ONE REFILL into the reaction canister! The second REFILL (Only JBL PROFLORA CO₂ ADVANCED BIO SET) is intended only as a replenishment later!
2. Now fill approx. 500 ml of tempered tap water (approx. 20 -25 °C) into the reaction vessel up to the upper mark or the label edge (not higher!).
3. Screw the lid firmly back on to the reaction canister and shake briefly, holding the hose connection opening closed with one finger. Note: There is an O-ring seal in the inner groove of the cover; make sure it is seated correctly.
4. (JBL PROFLORA CO₂ STARTER BIO SET and JBL PROFLORA CO₂ BASIC BIO SET only): Remove the protective foil from one side of the self-adhesive velcro tape (3) and apply it vertically below the lid of the reaction canister.
5. (JBL PROFLORA CO₂ STARTER BIO SET and JBL PROFLORA CO₂ BASIC BIO SET only): Place the reaction canister next to the aquarium and remove the second protective strip from the velcro tape. Now press the canister with the self-adhesive side of the velcro tape against the aquarium. This will prevent the canister from being knocked over accidentally and it can still be easily removed to be refilled whenever necessary. If there is no room next to the aquarium, the canister can reaction be attached in the same way to any other vertical surface. However, it is important to ensure that the canister always stands on a supporting surface. The velcro tape alone is not suitable for hanging the canister without additional support!
6. (JBL PROFLORA CO₂ ADVANCED BIO SET only): Remove the protective strip from one side of the double-sided adhesive tape and fix this to the left and right of the thermal casing‘s reverse side.
7. (JBL PROFLORA CO₂ ADVANCED BIO SET only): Now remove the protective strip from the other side of the double-sided adhesive tape and press the thermal casing and tape firmly to a clean section of the side pane of the aquarium. Alternatively the thermal casing can be mounted inside the aquarium cabinet or onto a vertical surface near the aquarium using the screws provided.
8. (JBL PROFLORA CO₂ ADVANCED BIO SET only): Position the reaction canister in the thermal casing.
9. (JBL PROFLORA CO₂ STARTER BIO SET only): Put the air stone inside one end of the CO₂ hose and use the suction cap to fix it in a position near the base of the aquarium where there is a gentle water current.
10. (JBL PROFLORA CO₂ BASIC BIO SET and JBL PROFLORA CO₂ ADVANCED BIO SET only): Push the end of the CO₂ hose onto the hose connection of the diuser JBL PROFLORA CO₂ GLASS MIDI. Use the suction cup with a clip to fix the diuser in a position near the base of the aquarium, where there is a gentle water current.
11. (JBL PROFLORA CO₂ BASIC BIO SET and JBL PROFLORA CO₂ ADVANCED BIO SET only): Feed the CO₂ hose out of the aquarium and cut it o with scissors just above the surface of the water (approx. 10 – 20 cm). Then fit the check valve onto the hose end, paying attention to the direction of flow. The arrow should point towards the aquarium. Now use the remaining piece of hose to connect the free end of the check valve to the hose connection on the reaction canister.

The CO₂ production will start within 24 – 48 hours and will supply your aquarium with CO₂ for approx. 40 days per filling.

Handling the hose screw connection on the check valve and reaction canister:

Unscrew the union nut completely and place it on the free hose end. Push the hose end onto the connecting piece and screw the union nut back on.

Refill:

When no more bubbles are emitting from the diuser, the substrate in the reaction canister has been used up. Proceed then as follows:

Pull the hose o the lid of the reaction canister and dispose of its contents in the sewage system. Rinse the reaction canister in lukewarm tap water. Refill the reaction canister again, as described above, using a new JBL PROFLORA CO₂ REFILL BIO, available from specialist pet shops.

Important notes:

The system is designed for a room temperature of 21 – 23 °C. In cooler rooms the production of CO₂ may not be sucient. In such a case, the room temperature should ideally be increased.

The JBL PROFLORA CO₂ ADVANCED BIO SET set operates largely independently of the room temperature, thanks to its thermal casing which transmits the aquarium temperature to the reaction canister.

Should large quantities of the contents of the reaction canister accidentally spill into the aquarium during operation, this may result in cloudy water and lead to an oxygen deficiency. In such an event, please carry out a large partial water change. Check that the fertiliser system is operating correctly, in particular that it is filled to the correct level. Never fill above the upper mark! The reaction canister should always be mounted securely on a vertical surface using the velcro tape or be positioned inside the thermal casing.

Always keep the reaction canister in an upright position and out of the reach of children!
