JAY® Adjustable Solid Seat

THE JAY® ADJUSTABLE SOLID SEAT – 270 SERIES MODELS

Maximum user weight: 250 lbs. (113 kg)

ACAUTION:
Installing a cushion on a wheelchair may affect the center of gravity of the wheelchair and may cause the chair to tip backwards potentially resulting in injury. Always assess for the potential need for anti-tippers or amputee axle adapter brackets to be added to the wheelchair to help increase stability.

The Jay Adjustable Solid Seat is designed to provide a customized base of support for your wheelchair cushion. Please follow the instructions below to ensure proper fitting of the Adjustable Solid Seat to your wheelchair. Proper wheelchair seating is best prescribed and installed under the supervision of a doctor or therapist. Professional re-evaluation of the seating system on a yearly basis is also recommended.

Remove Seat Upholstery from Your Wheelchair
The Solid Seat will replace your existing upholstery. Sometimes the screws holding the upholstery in place are used to hold post guides into the rear end of seat rails. If so, these particular screws (and concealed springs) will have to be re-attached to your wheelchair’s seat rails.

Optional Velstick® Installation
The Solid Seat has two square depressions on the top, front portion which are designed for Velstick fastening patches. The Jay J2® and Jay GS® Cushions have Velcro® patches on the bottom. When these patches are in place on the Solid Seat, the seat and the cushion will fasten together. This attachment helps prevent the cushion from sliding.

To install, place Velstick squares, rough side up, into the depressions on top of the seat. Press “legs” of rivets into holes of each piece of Velstick, and into the hole in the seat. The “pin” of the rivet will stick up. Use a small hammer to drive the pin down into the rivet, just flush with the cap. Hit the pin squarely with several firm strikes to drive the pin into location.

Width Adjustment
Begin by assembling hardware into channels “B” and “D” (as shown at left). Do this by holding each bracket in the channel selected, and placing the bolt provided through the top of the seat and the slot in the bracket. Thread nut on several turns. Slide hardware out to either side to correspond to the width of your wheelchair. (If you don’t know your wheelchair width, measure from the outer edge of one seat rail to the outer edge of the other). Tighten all fasteners to 3.4 Nm [30 in-lbs] using a Phillips No. 2 screwdriver and a 7/16-in wrench. Try placing the Solid Seat onto wheelchair rails. It should slip on and off easily without getting caught on any of your wheelchair’s hardware.

Fitting Hints:

• Ease of attachment/detachment might be improved by narrowing or widening hardware attachment by one notch (1/4-in or 1/2 cm).
• When extending seat width, there will be a noticeable gap between the side of your seat and your seat rails. This gap will not cause a problem as long as you have the firm base of sup-port provided by the Jay J2 Cushion. Softer cushions might make it necessary for your dealer to insert a thin plywood insert into your cushion cover.

Length Adjustment
For a longer seat length, position Solid Seat 1-in (2.5 cm) forward of the rear vertical posts of your wheelchair. If front hooks are less than 1-in (2.5 cm) from front end of seat rails, then remove front hardware and move it to the alternate channel directly behind it.

Note: If your cushion length is longer than the seat, it must be firm enough not to sag beyond the end of the Solid Seat. Ajay 12 Cushion is firm enough to extend up to 2in (5 cm) beyond the seat depth without adversely affecting its performance
To shorten seat depth, slide seat backward so that rear 1-in (2.5 cm) is between the posts of your chair
To shorten seat depth to more than 1-in (2.5 cm) use a handsaw to cut the desired lengths off front and back of Solid Seat.

Fitting Hints:

• Once you have determined the position of your Solid Seat on your wheelchair, you may find that the hooks interfere with the hardware that is particular to your wheelchair. If this is the case, reposition those hardware hooks and the brackets to an alternate channel
• If shortening your Solid Seat, make sure that the cross bar cut-outs on seat match your wheel chair. Also make sure that channels to be used for Solid Seat hardware permit installation of Solid Seat in a position where it doesn’t interfere with other accessories mounted to your wheelchair rails.

Height Adjustment
Lowering your seat height can assist in compensating for cushion thickness. If you propel with your legs, it can help your feet reach the floor. Similarly, raising seating height can help increase leg support on your cushion. To adjust height, simply unscrew height adjustment bolt to a point where the teeth disengage. This will permit you to raise the hook (to lower seat height) by up to 1.5-in (4 cm). This can be done in 1/2-in (1 cm increments. Similarly, lowering the hook will raise seating height by up to 1-in (2.5 cm).

Angle Adjustment
You can change the angle of your Solid Seat by adjusting front and back hooks at different heights. For example, angling the seat backwards is often helpful in holding the hips to the back of the wheelchair. Similarly, a side-to-side slant of the seat can help to accommodate a fixed pelvic obliquity. (Make these adjustments only under the supervision of your doctor of therapist).

Note: Once you have finalized the height and angle of your seat, you will need to adjust the hooks so that they are level on your wheelchair’s rails. To do this, loosen the width adjustment bolts and push the seat firmly onto the rails. This will cause the brackets to rotate in their seat channels until the hooks rest flatly on the wheelchair rails. Once this happens, retighten the width adjustment bolts.

Secure Hook Retainers and Stopper
You should now be ready to secure the restraining hardware onto your wheelchair rails.
Snap the two hook retainers behind the mar hooks as shown below. These will prevent your Seat from accidentally popping out of the wheelchair. Snap hook stopper 1/4-in (1/2) cm) for ward of one front hook. This will prevent your Seat from sliding forward

Retainers and stopper should be secured tightly to wheelchair rails with the nuts and bolts provided. Tighten all fasteners to 1.7 Nm [15 in-lbs] using a Phillips No. 2 screwdriver. Point the heads of the bolts to the outside of the wheelchair

Note: Enclosed are three lengths of 8-32 bolts. Use

• the 8 – 32 * 3 / 4 – 4r 1.9 cm) when the stopper is mounted on 7/8-in tubing
• the 8-32 x 1-n (2.5 cm) when the stopper and/or retainers are mounted on 1-in (2.5 cm) diameter tubing
• the 8.32 * 1 – 1/4 – 11 (3.2 cm) when the stopper and/or retainers are mounted over “rivnut” threaded insert on 1-in (2.5 cm) diameter tubing

WARNING:
Using bolt longer than required can interfere with installation and removal of seat
To install Solid Seat, simply slide rear hooks under the rear hook retainers and drop front hook behind hook stopper

Note: If hook retainers or stopper cannot be installed due to interference with hard-ware on your wheelchair, you might need to select an alternate channel for your brackets and hooks.

To permanently install the Solid Seat into your wheelchair, simply install the left rear hook retainer on the left front rail and point retainer to the rear (Your right rear hook retainer should be installed in the normal position)

Threadlocker Application
Enclosed is a tube of threadlocker fluid. After the Solid Seat has been adjusted to fit the wheel-chair, apply one drop of the Threadlocker fluid to the threads of each bolt where the threads extend out from the nut or bracket. This will prevent the bolts from loosening.

Note: The threadlocker fluid does not air dry. Excess fluid may be wiped off after five minutes.

MODIFYING YOUR CUSHION TO YOUR DROPPED OR ANGLED SEAT
Should you choose to drop or angle your Solid Seat, you will need to modify your cushion to fit over your wheelchair rails and crossbars. (Cushion modifications are not necessary for level or raised seats.) A Jay J2 Cushion is most appropriate for this type of modification. Do not attempt to modify your cushion yourself as special equipment is necessary. These modifications should be done by your dealer or by Sunrise.

SOLID SEAT LIP KIT AVAILABLE
This kit is used to locate the cushion in a specific place on the Solid Seat and prevent the cushion from sliding. It includes two “Lips” which mount easily to the Solid Seat. It is especially helpful when using the Jay GS Growth and Positioning System for children.

MONTH LIMITED WARRANTY
Each Jay Adjustable Solid Seat is carefully inspected and tested to provide peak performance. Every Jay Adjustable Solid Seat is guaranteed to be free from defects in materials and workman-ship for a period of 24 months from the date of purchase, provided normal use. Should a defect in materials or workmanship occur within 24 months from the original date of purchase, Sunrise Medical will, at its option, repair or replace it without charge.

Claims and repairs should be processed through the nearest authorized supplier. Except for express warranties made herein, all other warranties, including implied warranties of merchant-ability and warranties of fitness for a particular purpose are excluded. There are not warranties which extend beyond the description on the face hereof. Remedies for breach of express warranties herein are limited to repair or replacement of the goods. In no event shall damages for breach of any warranty include any consequential damages or exceed the cost of non-con-forming goods sold.
