When to use FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strips
When a woman becomes pregnant, her body produces a hormone called hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin). The secretion of this hormone by the developing placenta begins soon after conception and increases throughout the first trimester. The presence of hCG in the urine is an excellent indication in the detection of pregnancy. FIRST RESPONSE Pregnancy Test Strips is a qualitative test for the detection of hCG in urine. With the FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strips, you can test on the first day of your missed period.
EACH POUCH CONTAINS:
1 FIRST RESPONSE™
1 moisture absorbent pack. The absorbent pack helps to preserve the test strip while enclosed inside the pouch.
This pack is not to be used in connection with the test and should be discarded once the pouch is opened.
Before you begin the test:
Please read all the information in this leaflet before performing the test. You need a disposable cup and 1 test strip. The directions should be followed precisely lo get accurate results.
- With FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strips you can perform your test anytime of the day. You do not have to use the first morning urine. Generally, however, your first morning urine contains the highest level of the pregnancy hormone hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin).
- Do not open protective pouch until you are ready to perform the test.
- Have a watch, clock or timer available.
How to perform the test:
- Urinate in a disposable cup. You will need 5 minutes to perform the test. If you do not have time to perform the test immediately after collecting the urine, cover and store the urine in the refrigerator. It should not be stored for longer than 12 hours. Never freeze the sample. If the urine is refrigerated and you are ready to perform the test please remove the urine sample from the refrigerator and allow to reach room temperature. This should take approximately 30 minutes. Do not heat or shake.
- Remove one FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strip from its pouch by tearing along the “splice”.
- With the arrows pointing towards the urine, dip the test strip into the urine sample for 10 seconds or until you see the urine move along the test strip. The surface of the sample must be below the black boundary line on the strip.
See illustration.
Note: Hold the strip as straight as possible. MAX - Remove the test strip from the urine sample. Place it on a non-absorbent flat surface and begin timing. DO NOT move the test strip while results are developing.
- Read the results after 5 minutes. Use the examples in the uHow to read the test results” section to help you interpret your result. Do not interpret after 15 minutes.
- Discard the test strip in the trash after you have read your result.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q: When can I perform the test?
A: If perfomiing the test on the first day of your missed period, it is important to use first morning urine. The first morning urine contains the highest concentration of hCG. If your period is more than one week overdue, use of morning urine is not as critical, since your hCG level should be significantly higher.
Q: How accurate is the test?
A; In studies of the FIRST RESPONSE Pregnancy Test SITips with urine samples representative of both pregnant and non-pregnant subjects, both laboratory technicians and consumers obtained the correct expected result in more than 99%* of the samples. *>99% accurate at detecting the pregnancy hormone. However, some pregnant women may not have detectable amounts of the pregnancy hormone hCG in their urine on the first day of the missed period or may have miscalculated the first day of their period.
Q: Can the result c:hange from standing for a c:ertain leng1h of time?
A; It is important that the result be interpreted between 5 to 15 minutes. In order to have a correct result, you should only read the result after 5 minutes from adding the urine sample. However, in order to prevent any incorrect results, the test result should not be interpreted after 15 minutes.
Q: Can any medic:ines affect the result?
A; Test results should not be affected by oral contraceptives, painkillers, antibiotics, other common drugs or caffeine. However, fertility drugs may cause an inaccurate result. Medicines that contain hCG (hCG drugs which are given by injecfions) can give false results.
Q: If the test result is positive, what do I do?
A; Remember, this is not intended to replace your healthcare professional's diagnosis. If the test result is positive, you should see your healthcare professional to confirm that you are pregnant and to discuss your pregnancy and advise on the steps you should take next. The earlier you see your healthcare professional, the better it is for your health and that of your baby.
Q: If the test result is negative, what do I do?
A; A negafive test result means that no pregnancy hormone has been detected. You may not be pregnant, or it may be too early to tell. If your period does not start within a week, you may have miscalculated the day your period was due. Repeat the test using another pregnancy test strip after 7 days. If the second test still gives you a negative result and you still have not menstruated, you should see your healthcare professional.
Q: I have waited longer than 5 minutes and still there are no lines in the test area. Is there anything wrong?
A: If no pink color band is visible within the test area 5 minutes after performing the test, the result is considered invalid. You should repeat the test with a new FIRST RESPONSET™ Pregnancy Test Strip. The test strip is not reusable. Possible causes for an invalid result include not holding the test strip in the urine for the appropriate length of time, or not immersing the test strip far enough into the urine for adequate sample absorption. Immersing the test strip past the black boundary line can also cause an invalid result.
