When to Use FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strips
When a woman becomes pregnant, her body produces a hormone called hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin). The secretion of this hormone by the developing placenta begins soon after conception and increases throughout the first trimester. The presence of hCG in urine is an excellent indicator for pregnancy detection. FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strips is a qualitative test for the detection of hCG in urine. You can test on the first day of your missed period.
Each Pouch Contains
- 1 FIRST RESPONSE™ Test Strip
- 1 moisture absorbent pack. This pack helps preserve the test strip and should be discarded once the pouch is opened. It is not to be used in connection with the test.
Before You Begin the Test
You will need a disposable cup and 1 test strip. Follow the directions precisely for accurate results.
- You can perform the test anytime of the day. While first morning urine generally contains the highest level of hCG, it is not strictly necessary if your period is overdue.
- Do not open the protective pouch until you are ready to perform the test.
- Have a watch, clock, or timer available.
How to Perform the Test
- Urinate into a disposable cup. The test requires 5 minutes to perform.
- If you cannot test immediately after collecting urine, cover and store the urine in the refrigerator for no longer than 12 hours. Never freeze the sample. If refrigerated, allow the urine sample to reach room temperature (approximately 30 minutes) before testing. Do not heat or shake.
- Tear the pouch along the "splice" and remove one FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strip.
- With the arrows pointing towards the urine, dip the test strip into the urine sample for 10 seconds, or until you see the urine move along the strip. Ensure the sample surface is below the black boundary line on the strip.
- Remove the test strip from the urine sample. Place it on a flat, non-absorbent surface and begin timing. Do not move the test strip while results are developing.
- Read the results after 5 minutes. Do not interpret the result after 15 minutes.
- Discard the used test strip in the trash.
How to Read the Test Results
Read results at 5 minutes.
- Pregnant: Two pink color bands within the test area indicate you are likely pregnant. One line may be lighter than the other.
- Not Pregnant: One color band within the test area indicates you are not pregnant.
- Invalid: If no pink color band is visible within the test area after 5 minutes, the result is considered invalid. Repeat the test with a new strip. Possible causes for an invalid result include not holding the test strip in the urine for the appropriate length of time, not immersing the strip deep enough into the urine for adequate sample absorption, or immersing the test strip past the black boundary line.
Questions and Answers
- Q: When can I perform the test?
- A: If testing on the first day of your missed period, use first morning urine for the highest hCG concentration. If your period is more than a week overdue, morning urine is less critical as your hCG level should be significantly higher.
- Q: How accurate is the test?
- A: In studies, FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strips achieved over 99% accuracy in detecting the pregnancy hormone. However, some pregnant women may not have detectable hCG levels on the first day of a missed period, or they may have miscalculated their period date.
- Q: Can the result change if it stands for a certain length of time?
- A: It is important to interpret the result between 5 and 15 minutes. Read the result only after 5 minutes from adding the urine sample. Do not interpret the result after 15 minutes.
- Q: Can any medicines affect the result?
- A: Test results should not be affected by oral contraceptives, painkillers, antibiotics, other common drugs, or caffeine. However, fertility drugs or medicines containing hCG (administered by injection) may cause inaccurate results.
- Q: What do I do if the test result is positive?
- A: Consult your healthcare professional to confirm pregnancy and discuss next steps. Earlier consultation is better for your health and your baby's.
- Q: What do I do if the test result is negative?
- A: A negative result means no pregnancy hormone was detected. You may not be pregnant, or it may be too early to tell. If your period does not start within a week, repeat the test using another strip after 7 days. If the second test is still negative and you have not menstruated, consult your healthcare professional.
- Q: I have waited longer than 5 minutes and still there are no lines in the test area. Is there anything wrong?
- A: If no pink color band is visible within the test area after 5 minutes, the result is considered invalid. Repeat the test with a new FIRST RESPONSE™ Pregnancy Test Strip. Possible causes for an invalid result include not holding the test strip in the urine for the appropriate length of time, not immersing the test strip deep enough into the urine for adequate sample absorption, or immersing the test strip past the black boundary line.
