Product Usage Instructions
Surface Preparation
Before starting the portrait painting, ensure the surface is prepared adequately. If using canvases or other surfaces, apply at least 2 layers of preparation, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next.
Color Selection
Utilize colors like Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Umber, and Burnt Sienna for your portrait painting. These colors are recommended for achieving desired results.
Palettes
For oil painters, a glass palette is included with the product. However, you have the option to bring your own preferred palette if desired.

- Can I use different brands for the suggested materials?
Yes, you are welcome to use similar products and brands from other stores for the materials recommended in the instructions. - How many layers of surface preparation are recommended?
It is suggested to apply at least 2 layers of preparation on the surface before starting the painting, ensuring each layer dries properly.
While all materials can be found at Opus Art Supplies, similar products and brands from other stores are welcome. Suggested brand names are ‘italicized’. Additional materials are also welcome.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
Easels, side tables, chairs & stools, containers for liquids, masking tape, saran wrap.
SURFACE
- 2 Surfaces: any size between 9” x 12” and 12” x 16” (bring one surface to 1st class)
- Stretched canvas or gessoed hardboard panel (aka ‘Artboard’ or ‘Ampersand’) are preferred. Canvas board is also welcome.
- This surface require a total of 3 layers of ‘acrylic white gesso’. With pre-gessoed surfaces, please add 2 more layers, allowing to dry between layers.
PAINT
Oils are recommended, but acrylics are welcome. It is recommended to use ‘artist grade’ vs. ‘student grade’ paint.
- Titanium White / Yellow Ochre / Cadmium Red Light / Ultramarine Blue / Alizarin Crimson (or Permanent Alizarin) / Burnt Umber / Burnt Sienna
MEDIUM
- For Oil Painters: Linseed Oil + OMS (Odourless Mineral Spirits)
- Use Gamblin’s ‘Gamsol’ only! Please do not bring other brands or turpentine
- Bring an extra glass jar + lid to store excess dirty OMS after class
- For Acrylic Painters:
- Bring a small spray water bottle to keep your paint wet
- Acrylic ‘Retarder’ to extend drying time
BRUSHES
Please bring whatever brushes you enjoy working with in a range of shapes and sizes.
We recommend the following long-handled brushes:
- Synthetic Flat or Angled: sizes 4, 6, and 8 (1 of each)
- 1 Bristle Filbert: any size between 10 and 12
- 1 or more Synthetic Round: between size 0 and 4
PALETTES
- For Oil Painters:
A glass palette is provided, although you are welcome to bring your own - For Acrylic Painters:

- Gloves While Painting: Latex or ‘Gorilla Grip’ gloves (breathable + waterproof)
- Gloves for Brush Cleaning: Waterproof rubber gloves are recommended.
- Sketchbook 8.5” x 11” or smaller for taking notes
- Mahl stick
