Setup and Installation
- Unpack the Filter: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage.
- Assemble Filter Media:
- Rinse all filter media (sponge, bio balls, filter pad) thoroughly with aquarium water or dechlorinated tap water before placing them into the filter chambers. This removes any manufacturing dust.
- Place the filter media into the designated chambers. Typically, mechanical filtration (sponge) goes first, followed by biological media (bio balls), and then chemical media (if used, or additional filter pad). The transparent design allows you to see the arrangement.
- Attach Intake Tube: Connect the intake tube to the bottom of the power head. Ensure it is securely fitted.
- Position the Filter: The SOBO AQ-182H is a hang-on filter. Place the filter unit on the rim of your aquarium. Ensure it is level and stable. The intake tube should extend into the aquarium water.
- Fill with Water: Before plugging in, ensure the filter box is filled with aquarium water. This primes the pump and prevents dry running.
- Connect Power: Once the filter is properly positioned and filled with water, plug the power cable into a suitable electrical outlet. Ensure there is a drip loop to prevent water from traveling along the cord to the outlet.
- Check Operation: The filter should start pumping water immediately. Observe the water flow and check for any leaks.
Operating Instructions
Once installed and powered on, the SOBO AQ-182H filter will continuously circulate and filter your aquarium water. The transparent design allows for easy visual inspection of the water flow and media condition.
- Continuous Operation: For optimal water quality, it is recommended to operate the filter continuously.
- Flow Rate: The filter provides a maximum flow rate of 700L/H. Ensure the water level in your aquarium is maintained to allow for proper water intake.
- Monitoring: Regularly observe the water clarity and the condition of the filter media through the transparent casing. Reduced flow or visible debris on the media indicates it's time for maintenance.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the efficient operation and longevity of your filter, as well as for maintaining a healthy aquarium environment.
- Unplug the Filter: Always unplug the filter from the power outlet before performing any maintenance.
- Remove Filter Unit: Carefully lift the filter unit off the aquarium rim.
- Clean Filter Media:
- Remove the filter media from the chambers.
- Rinse the sponge and filter pad thoroughly in old aquarium water (siphoned during a water change) or dechlorinated tap water. Avoid using untreated tap water as chlorine can kill beneficial bacteria.
- Gently rinse bio balls if they appear clogged, again using aquarium water. Avoid over-cleaning biological media to preserve beneficial bacteria.
- Replace heavily soiled or degraded filter pads/sponges as needed.
- Clean Impeller and Housing:
- Remove the power head from the filter box.
- Carefully remove the impeller cover and the impeller itself.
- Clean the impeller and its housing with a small brush to remove any accumulated debris or algae.
- Reassemble the impeller and cover securely.
- Clean Intake Tube: Use a brush to clean any algae or debris from the intake tube.
- Reassemble and Restart: Place the cleaned media back into the filter chambers, reattach the power head and intake tube, position the filter on the aquarium, fill with water, and plug it back in.
Frequency: Mechanical media (sponge, filter pad) should be cleaned every 1-2 weeks, or when flow rate noticeably decreases. Biological media should be rinsed less frequently, perhaps monthly or bi-monthly, only if visibly clogged.
