3. Changing the Reel (Dethatcher or Scarifier)

The unit comes with two interchangeable reels: a dethatcher reel with spring tines and a scarifier reel with rigid blades. Always disconnect power before changing reels.

  1. Lay the unit on its side, ensuring the power is disconnected.
  2. Locate the reel retention mechanism (usually a bolt or quick-release lever).
  3. Use the provided Allen key or appropriate tool to release and remove the currently installed reel.
  4. Insert the desired reel (dethatcher or scarifier), aligning it correctly with the drive shaft.
  5. Secure the reel in place, ensuring it is firmly seated and locked.

4. Height Adjustment

The unit features a 4-position height adjustment lever to control the working depth. Adjust the depth based on your lawn's condition and the task (dethatching or scarifying).

  • Position 1 (Deepest): Approximately -0.47 inches (1.19 cm). Suitable for aggressive scarifying or heavily thatched lawns.
  • Position 2: Approximately -0.31 inches (0.79 cm). For moderate dethatching or scarifying.
  • Position 3: Approximately -0.16 inches (0.41 cm). For light dethatching or aeration.
  • Position 4 (Highest): Approximately 0.23 inches (0.58 cm). For very light dethatching or transport.

Operation

Before operating, ensure all safety instructions have been read and understood, and the unit is properly assembled.

1. Starting the Unit

  1. Connect the waterproof power plug to a suitable outdoor extension cord.
  2. Ensure the extension cord is plugged into a grounded outdoor outlet.
  3. Press and hold the safety lock button, then squeeze the bail switch lever against the handle to start the motor. Release the safety lock button once the motor starts.

2. Dethatching Your Lawn

Dethatching removes the layer of dead grass and organic matter that accumulates between the soil surface and green grass blades. This improves water, nutrient, and air penetration.

  • Install the dethatcher reel.
  • Set the height adjustment to a higher setting (e.g., Position 3 or 4) for initial passes, especially if thatch is light. For heavier thatch, gradually lower the setting.
  • Walk at a steady pace, pushing the unit forward in overlapping rows, similar to mowing.
  • The 13-inch working path ensures efficient coverage.
  • The collection bag will gather some thatch, but for very thick thatch, you may need to rake afterward.

3. Scarifying Your Lawn

Scarifying involves cutting into the soil surface to improve aeration and prepare for overseeding. This is a more aggressive process than dethatching.

  • Install the scarifier blade reel.
  • Start with a higher depth setting (e.g., Position 2 or 3) and gradually lower it if needed, to avoid damaging the lawn.
  • Make passes in a consistent pattern.
  • Scarifying will loosen soil and create channels for new seed and nutrients.

4. Collection Bag Usage

The 8-gallon collection bag is designed to gather removed thatch and debris. For very dense thatch or aggressive scarifying, the bag may fill quickly. It is often more efficient to remove the bag and rake up the debris manually after completing the passes.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your unit. Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance.

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the unit thoroughly. Remove any grass, dirt, or debris from the housing, reels, and wheels. Use a damp cloth; do not spray water directly onto the motor or electrical components.
  • Reel Inspection: Regularly inspect the dethatcher tines and scarifier blades for wear or damage. Replace worn or bent tines/blades to maintain effectiveness.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a dry, well-ventilated area. The foldable handle allows for compact storage. Ensure the power cord is neatly wrapped and secured.
  • Cord Care: Inspect the power cord and extension cord for any cuts, fraying, or damage before each use. Replace damaged cords immediately.
