Operating the Lens

Autofocus (AF) / Manual Focus (MF) Switch

The lens features an AF/MF switch on its barrel. This switch allows you to quickly change between autofocus and manual focus modes.

  • Set the switch to AF for automatic focusing. The lens will use the camera's autofocus system.
  • Set the switch to MF for manual focusing. Rotate the focus ring on the lens barrel to adjust focus manually.

Aperture Control

The VILTROX AF 85mm f/2.0 Z lens features a bright f/2.0 maximum aperture. This wide aperture allows for excellent performance in low-light conditions and enables the creation of shallow depth of field with pleasing background blur (bokeh).

  • Aperture can be controlled via your camera body's settings. Refer to your camera's manual for specific instructions on changing aperture.
  • Using wider apertures (e.g., f/2.0, f/2.8) will result in more background blur and allow more light into the sensor.
  • Using narrower apertures (e.g., f/11, f/16) will increase depth of field, keeping more of the scene in focus.

Minimum Object Distance (MOD)

This lens has an immersive minimum object distance of 0.74 meters (2.43 feet), allowing you to capture close-up subjects with clarity and fine detail. When shooting close, ensure your camera's focus mode is set appropriately for precise focusing.

Firmware Updates

The lens is equipped with a USB-C port for firmware updates. Periodically check the VILTROX official website for the latest firmware versions to ensure optimal performance and compatibility with new camera models. To update firmware:

  1. Download the latest firmware file from the VILTROX website to your computer.
  2. Connect the lens to your computer using a USB-C cable.
  3. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware download for the update process.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Lens Elements

To clean the front and rear lens elements:

  1. Use a blower brush to remove any loose dust or debris.
  2. If smudges or fingerprints remain, apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to a clean microfiber lens cloth.
  3. Gently wipe the lens surface in a circular motion from the center outwards. Avoid excessive pressure.
  4. Never use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the lens coatings.

Cleaning the Lens Body

Wipe the lens body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth. Ensure no moisture enters the lens.

Storage

When not in use, always attach the front and rear lens caps. Store the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, consider using a dehumidifying agent to prevent mold growth.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your VILTROX AF 85mm f/2.0 Z STM lens, consider the following common solutions:

  • Lens not recognized by camera: Ensure the lens is securely mounted and clicked into place. Power off and restart the camera. Check for any available firmware updates for both the lens and your camera.
  • Autofocus not working: Verify the AF/MF switch on the lens is set to AF. Check your camera's focus mode settings. Ensure there is sufficient light and contrast in your subject for the autofocus system to operate effectively.
  • Image quality issues (softness, chromatic aberration): Ensure the lens elements are clean. For optimal sharpness, consider stopping down the aperture slightly (e.g., to f/4 or f/5.6). Chromatic aberration is suppressed by the lens design, but can be further corrected in post-processing if visible in extreme conditions.
  • Lens hood difficult to attach/detach: Ensure proper alignment of the marks on the hood and lens barrel. Do not force it; a gentle twist should secure or release it.

If problems persist, consult the VILTROX official website for further support or contact customer service.
