3. Setup

3.1 Initial Winding

Your Bulova Sutton Automatic watch is powered by a mechanical movement that winds itself with the motion of your wrist. If the watch has stopped or has not been worn for an extended period, it may require manual winding to initiate operation.

  1. Gently unscrew the crown (if it is a screw-down crown) or pull it out to position 1 (neutral position, closest to the case).
  2. Turn the crown clockwise approximately 20-30 times. This will build up an initial power reserve.
  3. Push the crown back into its original position. The second hand should begin to move.

3.2 Setting the Time

To set the correct time:

  1. Pull the crown out to position 2 (farthest from the case). The second hand will stop.
  2. Turn the crown in either direction to move the hour and minute hands to the desired time.
  3. Once the time is set, push the crown back into position 1 (or screw it down if applicable) to restart the movement and ensure water resistance.

4. Operating Your Automatic Watch

4.1 Automatic Winding Mechanism

Your watch is equipped with an automatic mechanical movement. This means that the natural motion of your wrist while wearing the watch causes an oscillating weight (rotor) inside the watch to rotate, which in turn winds the mainspring. As long as the watch is worn regularly, it will continue to operate without the need for manual winding or batteries.

4.2 Power Reserve

When fully wound, your Bulova Sutton Automatic watch has a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. If the watch is removed from your wrist and not worn, it will continue to run for this duration before stopping. To restart it, follow the initial winding instructions in Section 3.1.

5. Maintenance and Care

5.1 Cleaning

To maintain the appearance of your watch:

  • Wipe the case and bracelet regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.
  • For more thorough cleaning of the stainless steel, use a slightly damp cloth and mild soap, then rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Ensure the crown is pushed in (and screwed down if applicable) before any contact with water.

5.2 Water Resistance

Your watch is water resistant to 30 meters (3 ATM). This rating means the watch is suitable for everyday use and can withstand splashes or brief immersion in water. It is not suitable for swimming, showering, diving, or any water sports. Always ensure the crown is fully pushed in (and screwed down if applicable) to maintain water resistance.

5.3 Sapphire Crystal

The watch features an anti-reflective domed sapphire crystal, known for its exceptional scratch resistance. While highly durable, it is not entirely impervious to damage. Avoid impacts and contact with extremely hard surfaces.

5.4 Storage

When not wearing your watch, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and strong magnetic fields, which can affect the movement's accuracy.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Watch not running: If the watch has stopped, it likely needs to be wound. Manually wind the watch by turning the crown clockwise 20-30 times (refer to Section 3.1). If it still does not start, ensure the crown is fully pushed in.
  • Time inaccuracy: Automatic watches are mechanical instruments and may not keep time with the same precision as quartz watches. Minor variations are normal. Factors such as wearing habits, activity levels, and exposure to magnetic fields can affect accuracy. If the watch is consistently gaining or losing significant time, it may require servicing.
  • Condensation under crystal: If you notice condensation under the crystal, this indicates a breach in water resistance. Immediately take the watch to an authorized service center to prevent further damage to the movement.
