- Control Box: Houses the display, controls, and electronics.
- Adjustable Stem: Allows for height adjustment to suit different users.
- Arm Rest: Provides comfort and stability during use.
- Lock Knob: Secures the adjustable stem at the desired length.
- Search Coil: The 10-inch IP68 waterproof coil responsible for detecting metals.
Assembly Instructions
Follow these steps to assemble your metal detector:
- Attach the search coil to the lower stem using the provided bolt and nut. Ensure it is securely fastened but allows for slight angle adjustment.
- Connect the lower stem to the middle stem.
- Insert the middle stem into the upper stem, which is attached to the control box.
- Adjust the stem length to a comfortable height (between 36.2" and 47.2") and secure it with the lock knob.
- Wrap the search coil cable around the stem, ensuring it is not too tight and does not interfere with adjustments. Plug the cable connector into the port on the control box.
- Ensure the arm rest is properly positioned for comfortable use.
Battery Installation
The device requires 1 Lithium Polymer battery (included). Open the battery compartment on the control box, insert the battery according to the polarity indicators, and close the compartment securely.

Detection Modes
The SUNPOW OT-MD17 features 5 detection modes to optimize your search:
- All Metal Mode: Detects all types of metal. Ideal for general searching when you want to find any metallic object.
- DISC Mode: Allows you to eliminate specific unwanted targets such as bottle caps, foil, 5¢ coins, pull tabs, and 1¢ coins. Use the MENU key and (+/-) keys to select and eliminate targets.
- Notch Mode: Provides discrimination against specific categories like foil, 5¢ coins, pull tabs, and 1¢ coins, ignoring common trash items.
- Pinpoint (PP) Mode: Used to precisely locate the exact position of a detected target before digging. Press the P-P Key to activate.
- Volume Mode: Adjusts the audio output level.

Sensitivity Adjustment
Use the SENS button and (+/-) keys to adjust the detector's sensitivity. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but may also increase false signals in mineralized ground or areas with electromagnetic interference. Start with a moderate sensitivity and adjust as needed.
Target Identification
The LCD display provides visual target identification, including a Digital ID Cursor and Coin Depth Cursor, to help you assess the type and depth of the detected object.

Detection Depth
The upgraded DSP chip allows for a detection depth of up to 10 inches in All Metal mode.

Maintenance
- Cleaning: After each use, especially in wet or sandy conditions, wipe down the search coil and stem with a damp cloth. Ensure the control box remains dry.
- Storage: Store the metal detector in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the battery.
- Battery Care: Use only recommended battery types. Recharge the battery as needed and avoid overcharging.
- Cable Inspection: Regularly check the search coil cable for any signs of wear or damage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power | Dead battery; incorrect battery installation; loose cable connection. | Recharge/replace battery; check battery polarity; ensure all cables are securely connected. |
| False signals/Erratic behavior | High sensitivity setting; electromagnetic interference; mineralized ground. | Reduce sensitivity; move away from power lines/electronics; perform ground balance if available (refer to advanced settings). |
| Poor detection depth | Low sensitivity setting; incorrect mode; deeply buried target. | Increase sensitivity; switch to All Metal mode; sweep slower and closer to the ground. |
| No audio | Volume too low; faulty headphones (if used). | Increase volume; test with/without headphones. |
