Easy Assembly
Assembling the metal detector is straightforward and requires no special tools. Follow these steps:
- Attach the search coil to the lower stem using the supplied bolt and knob, placing washers into the stem's groove.
- Press the button on the upper end of the lower stem, slide it into the middle stem, and tighten the lock nut.
- Press the button on the middle stem, slide it into the S stem, and tighten the lock nut.
- Press the button on the top stem, slide it into the S stem, and adjust the stem length for a comfortable posture.
- Fix the control box onto the S stem and tighten the fixing screw.
- Wind the search coil cable around the stem and insert the cable plug into the jack at the back of the control box.
Caution: Do not over-tighten the search coil or use tools. Do not force the plug; pull the plug, not the cable, to disconnect.
Installing the Batteries
IMPORTANT: Use ALKALINE batteries for optimal performance. Remove batteries for prolonged storage. Do not use carbon batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries. Check batteries if the unit does not turn on, has low speaker volume, or beeps continuously at low sensitivity.
- Turn off the detector before installing batteries.
- Remove the battery cover.
- Insert two 9V alkaline batteries, matching polarity symbols (+ and -).
Warning: Dispose of old batteries properly; never bury or burn them.
Using Headphones
- It is recommended to use headphones with volume control.
- Insert the headphone's 3.5mm plug into the headphone jack at the bottom of the control box. The internal speaker will disconnect.
Layout of the Control Panel
The control panel features an LCD display with indicators for Target ID, DISC/NOTCH range, VOLUME, SENS, COIN DEPTH, and LOW BATT. It also includes control buttons: POWER, MENU, INCREASE (+), DECREASE (-), and PINPOINT.
LCD Display Details:
- Target ID Indications: Different metal types (IRON, GOLD RANGE, SILVER RANGE) are associated with specific tones and digital ID values.
- SENS (Sensitivity): Adjusts sensitivity from 1 to 10. Higher numbers increase sensitivity. Reduce sensitivity if the detector beeps erratically. Note that cell phones and towers can cause interference.
- VOLUME: Adjusts volume level from 0 to 10.
- DISC (Discrimination): Allows ignoring trash and unwanted objects by eliminating target categories in order using the + and - buttons. High value targets (silver) cannot be discriminated out.
- NOTCH: Similar to DISC, allows accepting or rejecting specific metal types. Applicable to FOIL, 5¢, ALUM, and 1¢ categories. Target ID flashes for 3 seconds to change state, or press MENU while flashing.
Testing the Detector
Supplies Needed: Bottle cap (iron), nickel (5¢), dime (10¢), quarter (25¢), penny (1¢), gold ring.
Positioning the Detector: Place on a table with the search coil overhanging, away from metal objects and interference. Pivot the search coil back and press POWER to turn on.
Using ALL METAL Feature: Wave objects over the search coil and note the different tones.
Using DISC (Discrimination) Feature: Press MENU until DISC is displayed. Press '+' to eliminate the bottle cap (iron). The bottle cap will not be detected.
Using NOTCH Feature: Press MENU until NOTCH is displayed. Press '+' twice to flash and eliminate 5¢. Press '+' to eliminate 1¢. 5¢ and 1¢ will not be detected.
Using PINPOINT Feature: Press and hold 'PINPOINT'. 'PP' will appear on the LCD. Hold a coin motionless over the search coil. Sweep the coin and notice the sound and depth indicator changes as the coin moves.
Adjusting SENS (Sensitivity): Press MENU until SENS is displayed. Use '+' or '-' to set sensitivity from 1 to 10.
Adjusting VOLUME: Press MENU until VOLUME is displayed. Use '+' or '-' to set volume from 0 to 10.
OVERLOAD WARNING: If a metal object or magnetic soil is too close, the detector will overload, displaying "- -" and emitting a rapid warning sound. Keep the search coil away from the target. This will not harm the detector.
Outdoor Detecting
- Find an area free of metal.
- Place a sample object on the ground.
- Press POWER to turn on the detector.
- Swing the search coil gently side-to-side, overlapping each sweep, keeping the coil 1-2 inches above the ground.
Notes: Avoid raising the coil during sweeps. Move slowly for best results. Desirable objects produce repeatable tones. Trashy ground, electrical interference, or large trash objects may cause false signals, often broken or non-repeatable.
Detecting with Pinpoint
After finding a target, use PP (Pinpoint) to locate it precisely:
- Press and hold PP to activate the feature.
- Move the search coil slowly across the target, guided by the sound.
- To narrow the detection range, position the search coil near the target, press and hold PP, move slowly until a sound is heard, release PP, then press PP again to continue detection. Repeat to refine the location. The strongest signal indicates the center of the target.
Troubleshooting Guide
Problem | Reason | Suggestion |
---|---|---|
The detector displays or sounds without detecting any target. | 1. Interference from broadcast antennas or electronic lines. 2. High environmental humidity. |
1. Change searching place. 2. Wait and check again. |
The detector sounds false signals. | 1. Sensitivity set too high or environmental interference. 2. Sweeping the search coil too fast or at the wrong angle. 3. Using 2 detectors in close proximity. |
1. Reduce sensitivity. 2. Sweep more slowly and hold the detector correctly. 3. Keep detectors at least 6 meters (20') apart. |
The detector does not detect anything. | 1. Sensitivity set too low. 2. Target range eliminated. 3. Search coil not parallel to the ground. |
1. Increase sensitivity. 2. Recover all target ranges. 3. Adjust search coil angle to be parallel to the ground. |
LCD display multiple target categories or emits several sounds at once. | 1. More than one kind of metal target. 2. Detector cannot identify the target. Oxidized metal can cause target arrow and tone excursion. |
1. Reduce sensitivity to eliminate deeper targets or target categories. 2. Sweep with different angles. |
No power, no sound. | 1. Five-pin cable not connected well. 2. Dead battery. |
1. Re-plug it properly. 2. Replace batteries. |
