  • Power Button (VOL/L): Press and hold to turn the detector ON/OFF. Short press to adjust volume.
  • MODE Button: Press to cycle through the 5 detection modes.
  • SENS Button: Press to adjust sensitivity.
  • '+' / '-' Buttons: Use to increase or decrease sensitivity, volume, or discrimination settings within a mode.
  • PP Button: Activates Pinpoint mode for precise target localization.

5.2 Power On/Off

To turn ON the detector, press and hold the Power (VOL/L) button until the LCD screen illuminates. To turn OFF, press and hold the Power (VOL/L) button again until the screen turns off.

5.3 Adjusting Volume

With the detector ON, short press the Power (VOL/L) button to cycle through volume levels. There are 10 levels of volume adjustment.

5.4 Adjusting Sensitivity

Press the SENS button, then use the '+' or '-' buttons to adjust the sensitivity level. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but may also increase false signals in highly mineralized ground or areas with electromagnetic interference. There are 10 sensitivity levels.

6. Detection Modes

The SUNPOW OT-MD16 offers 5 intelligent detection modes to optimize your search:

Figure 6.1: Overview of the 5 Intelligent Detection Modes.

  • ALL METAL Mode: Detects all types of metal. This mode provides the deepest detection and is ideal for general searching when you want to find any metallic object. The detector will notify you of any metal detected.
  • DISC (Discrimination) Mode: Allows you to eliminate unwanted metal objects one by one. You can set the detector to ignore specific types of trash metals like iron or foil, focusing on more valuable targets.
  • NOTCH Mode: This mode allows you to freely distinguish and reject specific categories of metals. For example, you can choose to ignore foil, 5-cent coins, or pull tabs, while still detecting other valuable items.
  • MEMORY Mode: In this mode, the detector searches only for remembered metals. You can program the detector to target specific metal types and eliminate others, which is useful for focused treasure hunting.
  • PP (Pinpoint) Mode: This mode is used to precisely locate the exact position of a detected target before digging. Once a target is detected in another mode, activate PP mode to narrow down its location.

6.1 Intelligent Metal ID

The LCD display provides real-time metal identification, showing a Target ID number (01-99) and an icon to help you identify the type of metal detected. This minimizes unnecessary digging.

  • If storing for an extended period, ensure the battery is partially charged (around 50%) to prolong its lifespan. Avoid storing with a completely full or completely empty battery.
  • Disassemble the detector and store it in the provided backpack for protection and portability.

7.3 Battery Care

  • Recharge the battery regularly, even if the detector is not used frequently.
  • Avoid exposing the battery to extreme temperatures (hot or cold).
  • If the battery performance significantly degrades, contact customer support for assistance.

8. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions
ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Detector does not power on.Low battery or power button not pressed correctly.Charge the battery. Press and hold the Power button firmly for a few seconds.
Excessive false signals or chatter.High sensitivity, electromagnetic interference, or highly mineralized ground.Reduce sensitivity. Move away from power lines, cell phones, or other electronic devices. Try a different detection mode.
No detection or weak signals.Low sensitivity, coil cable loose, or target too deep.Increase sensitivity. Ensure coil cable is securely connected. Sweep the coil closer to the ground.
Inaccurate Target ID.Target is deep, small, or surrounded by other metals.Use Pinpoint mode for better accuracy. Try sweeping from different angles.
Coil cable connection issues.Cable not properly wrapped or connector loose.Ensure the cable is wrapped snugly around the shaft and the connector is fully inserted and tightened.
